are people who like Autumn basically mad?

I know down here in the SE we've been blessed with good weather for the past few weeks, but here we are now on a wet and miserable Monday; kids coming home damp & stroppy from school because the honeymoon period is over & pavements are wet and slippery

The commute will be hellish; it was dark when many set off this morning, its definitely getting dark now and no doubt the trains will start failing due to the wrong kind of leaves on the line so you'll have to shove in with people whose umbrellas will drip down your neck or onto your feet.

I love the colours and shadows of autumn. In summer the sun is higher so shorter shadows and brighter so everything looks sun-bleached.

Ifailed · 19/09/2016 18:38

I am curious about all the pyromania. Like the best of people, I love a fire, but am struggling to understand where you are all burning stuff - on the balcony, out in the street? most places don't have fireplaces any more, and they are illegal down here anyway.

I only like the first week of autumn when it's a bit cooler and a relief from the hot weather, but before the misery sets in

I think people romanticize the shit out of autumn, everyone is all "oh lovely autumn leaves and crisp air and scarves&boots combos out of fashion magazines" when in actual fact everything looks grey and drizzly and cars are splashing you with dirty rainwater, toddlers are throwing their hats in puddles and kids are covered in mud up to their ears.

Autumn and Winter are my least favourite seasons in case you hadn't guessed Grin

cornishglos · 19/09/2016 18:39

They are mad.

Hellochicken · 19/09/2016 18:40

I'm ok with proper shoes/boots /opaque tights/coat/ scarves

Love autumn leaves.

Does the fruiting in garden of past few weeks count? (although this is coming to end now).

Going to turn Aga back on soon and so can bake - so overall not so bad.

FranklyMeDeer · 19/09/2016 18:40

Autumn is the best season of the lot - that said I don't have to deal with a train commute as per the OP so maybe that helps.

I overheat in the summer. My face sweats. My face. Ugghhhh.

I'm now sitting in a knitted hood with my feet in fluffy slippers. Might do hot choc for me and the dc's in a bit. Love it.

FranklyMeDeer · 19/09/2016 18:42

Oh God yes the faff of sun cream. We are all pale and go crispy in the sun. Fear easier to chuck on a jacket.

PNGirl · 19/09/2016 18:42

April to August is a nightmare where I live (South West, near Bath). Not only are we inundated with tourists and 30 schoolkids in matching hoodies or backpacks wandering around gawping, thinking it's ok to stand in the road because it's cobbled; the motorways are full of caravaners and motorhomers going down to Devon or Cornwall or Dorset, there's Glastonbury so nobody can get to school or work for nearly a week, they always do engineering work on the trains, and you can't get in a pub or coffee shop on a weekend for love nor money. Come September, everyone fecks back off where they came from - until the Christmas market that is. Bliss.

Also nobody likes to try and sleep in a room that's 29 degrees at night like our bedroom was a few times this summer. Nobody.

Sativa · 19/09/2016 18:43

Autumn is just depressing! The flipping clocks going back, never seeing daylight, the trees losing all their lovely green leaves, no more warm summer nights, just the endless grey......I do quite like jumpers and cardigans but would gladly give them up for all year summer!

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 19/09/2016 18:44

I love Autumn. Blackberries, most over the fields, snuffling hedgehogs, hot chocolate by the fire (towards the end), beautiful colours, bonfire night, the ability to wear knee boots again without getting sweaty feet, the sound of rain in the dark.

Revealall · 19/09/2016 18:44

YANBU

Auntumn clothes may be better but they cost a flipping fortune. I love boots but they are ££££'s compared to summer shoes( or bare feet).

And then it's heavy coat for cold days, waterproof coat for rainy days, gillet / big jumper for when the days are warmish but evenings are Baltic, gloves
, scarves etc etc

Not being able to dry outside so gaining that weird musty clothes smell .

Endless chuffing shopping for Halloween treats, bonfire night shit and sodding Christmas buying for months and months.

Misery.

FurryDogMother · 19/09/2016 18:45

I love Autumn! Blackberries, making wine, picking sloes for sloe gin, the first sprouts of the season (well, someone has to like them!), the smell of bonfire smoke (not so common nowadays), Guy Fawkes Night, Hallowe'en, the run up to Christmas when the shops are all lit up in the dark evenings - it's all lovely!

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 19/09/2016 18:46

In contrast summer sucks ass: too hot, can't sleep, sunburn, sweat... Ugh.

Thefishewife · 19/09/2016 18:46

I suffer with migraines and I am mostly I'll in the heat

Sat in the garden with the kids for 2 hours the other day ended up vomiting and with a migraine for two days it was awful

I hate being sweaty I can't even pick the kids up from school when it's hot because it makes me to ill

MillieMoodle · 19/09/2016 18:47

I love all the seasons and by the time each one ends, I'm ready for the next one.

We also live on the edge of a forest and the colours of the leaves are stunning, I love my drive to work in the autumn. This year I am determined that we will get out walking more in the forest. The rain doesn't bother me, I'll gladly go out for a walk, it's just water. I also love being warm and cosy inside with hot chocolate while it's wet and windy outside. Especially love the sound of the rain on the windows. I'm not overly keen on it getting dark earlier, sometimes I just want to hibernate!

MaddyHatter · 19/09/2016 18:48

the only bit i dont like is the rain.

There is nothing else to dislike.

BennyTheBall · 19/09/2016 18:48

I love them all.

I love the fact that I get a bit sick of whatever season it is and it has the good grace to change to a different one.

I particularly love the autumn - misty mornings, gorgeous trees, that hint of cold in the morning air, better clothes than summer, candles lit every night and best of all, the fire!

We have a freezer full of apple crumble (thanks to my ds) and blackberry and apple jelly in production in our kitchen right now. Last night we had a full on slow cooked beef with all the trimmings - we don't have such feasts in the summer.

2dogsonthesofa · 19/09/2016 18:49

Ifailed, I'm with you, don't like Autumn at all. It's usually wet and dull, the dogs traipse mud in, the hens stop laying, then the shop's decide Christmas has started ugh!

notagiraffe · 19/09/2016 18:50

I love autumn OP - crunchy golden leaves underfoot, lovely long boots and soft scarves to wear, log fires and soups, an excuse to watch old films while the rain hammers down outside...

2dogsonthesofa · 19/09/2016 18:51

Usually wet and dull, don't know where Sally came from, maybe she doesn't like it either

hidingwithwine · 19/09/2016 18:52

I detest summer - so each to their own, eh?

NuzzleandScratch · 19/09/2016 18:53

Plenty of houses have fireplaces! Confused Where are they illegal?

I also dislike the hot sweaty weather, breathing a sign of relief now the temperature's dropped!

MsRinky · 19/09/2016 18:55

This week I have bought lovely new woolly tights, fab yellow mini-wellies and got my blackberry rum on the go. Got my snuggly throws out ready for cosy evenings in, and have unpacked my scarves and mittens. Bring it on.

Arseface · 19/09/2016 18:57

Love seasons but especially the change from Summer to Autumn.
We may be moving somewhere equatorial for the next few years and I'm making the most of any Autumn/winter/spring I get!
Also, Livia Drusilla, love your name. Hope you didn't have as much to put up with as she did though!

WhatamessIgotinto · 19/09/2016 18:58

Fireplaces are illegal? Where? What kind of madness is this?
