To absolutely hate living in Surrey

I guess I have been here too long. Am 4 weeks away from escape to a very different part of the British Isles. All anyone seems to do here is go on about their sodding house price, how important their job is, the same one that has them getting the 0605 train like lemmings everyday. Socially people I habe found unfriendly and insular. It is practically a crime to be anything other than a Tory, but you can't show any interest in politics. The only acceptable subjects of conversation are how great you are, your job, Southern Rail and rugby. I hate it so very much I just hope there is a different world out there.

Phew. False alarm. You don't live in Surrey at all. Thank fuck for that.

And croydon isn't technically surrey even though it pretends to be.

Pag Grin. Wot you doin on 'ere?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/09/2016 02:19

Well you know, if you'd said Croydon to start with, you probably would have got a lot fewer disagreements. Wink

There aren't many places in the UK I don't like, and to be fair my dislike is mostly based on having to drive through the feckers, but Croydon is one. So is Milton Keynes, and lastly, Swindon (thanks to the fucking "magic" roundabout. You know, I once met the man who designed that - and he was actually proud of it! Shock )

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/09/2016 02:21

Pag, that map is hilarious! Grin

Penfold007 · 21/09/2016 02:36

OP you've judged the entire county of Surrey without even living in it. Croydon is a London Borough. I personally don't recognise the Surrey you hate so much. Good luck with the move I hope you find happiness in your new town and home.

That is true, HOWEVER if she thinks the people in Croydon are stuck up can you imagine how she would cope with those of us living in the 'naice' parts of the county Wink

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/09/2016 08:17

You have a point, paranormalish!

Stillunexpected · 21/09/2016 08:32

Selsdon moved to Surrey?! Who changed the borders without letting us know?!

Pagwatch · 21/09/2016 09:34

I'm glad you like the map Grin

My favs are the long strip that just says 'belligerent' and that 'twats' seem to be a suburb of 'Clarkson'

schbittery · 21/09/2016 11:36

well if you'd said you lived in Selsdon I might have understood more - it is a bit of a non-entity. It is NOT in Surrey though, neither is Sanderstead. Schools are run by Croydon not Surrey County Council. Nice Costa there though staffed by friendly students. Purley is also a bit non, I agree, but handy Tesco. I live in one of the Tory cesspits, though not a Tory - actually in Surrey, though still nothing like THE FAST MAJORITY OF THE COUNTY OF SURREY THAT IS NOT NEAR LONDON, and I quite like it. Mind you, I am in my 40's and lived, worked and partied in London for a long time before moving out to have kids who have a nice lifestyle here - big garden, lots of green space, good schools, more activities than any kid could ever do, easy access to coast and family via the M25. In my early twenties I would have hated it. How old are you? Do you have kids?

Croydon is ok too, when you get used to it, good transport links, handy shopping, London on the doorstep of all these places but prices not quite as high. Don't get the issue, though even the French Rugby team hated Selsdon .....

TheUnseenAcademic · 21/09/2016 12:03

Fun Fact: I heard on Radio 4 a few weeks ago that a greater area of Surrey is covered with golf courses than with housing.

ilovechocolate07 · 21/09/2016 12:10

I moved to Surrey 6 months ago from the North and so far, besides not enjoying being so far away from family and friends, it has definitely been the right decision to move. We are currently renting and I'm still getting my head around the house prices here as they're more than 3x the price of where we came from. Most people I have met so far are very friendly and a good percentage aren't from around here either.

Camembertie · 21/09/2016 12:29

Blimey - best of I think you're better off out of it, you think Selsdon is bad you really don't want to find yourself in Woldingham or Tatswood then, that's proper Surrey.

I quite like Selsdon (great Aldi) and live very very near you and don't really recognise what you are saying, so you are either very unlucky in who you mix with or you are somehow attracting these people at the expense of the vast majority of normal people (who currently are either cock a hoop over the new Boxpark at East Croydon due shortly or lamenting X Factor is going to be pants this year as no one from Croydon has made it through)

And yes, London Borough (just!) but Surrey address and some buses not run by London Transport - and eligible for Surrey and Croydon schools

mumondiet2013 · 21/09/2016 12:46

i think its what you put out you receive and attract but yes i didnt enjoy surrey for DIFFERENT reasons so i moved to south east london after good schooling and so far i have not been let down surrey is a big place so i think you would need to really think if its just the people you attract in your life and start a new hobby and push yourself think differently otherwise your thoughts will keep attracting this even if you are living in the moon

Chikara · 21/09/2016 13:00

Really OP you seem to know an awful lot of people. Must be exhausting talking to all these chaps and chapesses about their cars and houses. How do you find the time?? Myself, I barely have time to catch up with my 200 closest friends in between dashing to and from Waitrose, the Pony Club , the golf course and taking my bloody 4x4 into the garage.

Here is the full image of that map.

DarkBlueEyes · 21/09/2016 16:25

So have I got this right? The OP actually lives in Croydon but says she hates Surrey? Confused

Ilovewillow · 21/09/2016 16:33

Oh you should've moved a little further down, we are Hampshire and we are lovely!

Titsywoo · 21/09/2016 21:52

Yes OP is not in Surrey. And Selsdon is far from posh! Maybe her friends are from Sanderstead as that is a more 4x4 Tory area. Bloody love the place myself Grin

wonderfullyweird · 17/01/2018 07:36

You are not wrong

Pixiebloom · 17/01/2018 10:46

I used to visit my then girlfriend about 6 years ago when she was at uni in Farnham. Awful place. A woman came up to us when we were holding hands and said "can you stop being so obvious about it?" I was mortified. They didn't take too kindly to my "still hate Thatcher" t shirt either... London is my preferred city down south but I'll always be a Geordie!

Bramble71 · 17/01/2018 10:52

I suspect finding lots of people like those you describe is more down to it being a wealthy area, tbh. Would you find it better living in London or another big city, more diverse?
