To absolutely hate living in Surrey

I guess I have been here too long. Am 4 weeks away from escape to a very different part of the British Isles. All anyone seems to do here is go on about their sodding house price, how important their job is, the same one that has them getting the 0605 train like lemmings everyday. Socially people I habe found unfriendly and insular. It is practically a crime to be anything other than a Tory, but you can't show any interest in politics. The only acceptable subjects of conversation are how great you are, your job, Southern Rail and rugby. I hate it so very much I just hope there is a different world out there.

I love it here, close the door on your way out!

Haha Zombie thread....glad I found it though.
Just moved back to Surrey (previously this bit was Middlesex) after many years overseas and we're not from here.
Have joined a really friendly local gym, have nice neighbours (not from here either), and although a couple of them are blond, hair is not swishy.
We do have a Tory MP but I'm a paid up Labour supporter.
Love the proximity to Heathrow, London and easy access to the continent.
So far so good Smile

Expat, your MP isn't Kwasi is it? If so SNAP! Grin

We lived in Surrey about 20 years ago when I worked in London. In a little village just outside Godalming. It was a lovely place to live and close to both Godalming and Guildford and easy to get to work in London. Admittedly neither of us saw much of the neighbours as we tended to socialise with colleagues from london - but we really enjoyed it and it was good tog et out of London at the end of the day. We only moved due to us both getting jobs at another University which wasn't a commutable distance.

I look back on my Surrey days with nostalgia - and can still hold my own in a conversation about kitchen renovations, property prices and Southern Rail :-)

expatmigrant · 17/01/2018 15:37

codpuncher he is indeed! Same mentality here as in some labour strongholds...they would vote Tory here even if you were to put a blue tie on a donkey

CodPuncher · 17/01/2018 15:54

@expatmigrant I've lived here 23years now, the last tory fucker at least appeared in the borough. The rule is round here is you know it's election time if Kwasi is spotted Grin

Ahahaha, I just through this thread to find out what I'd actually said on it, way back on page one and it turns out that the OP is moaning about where I live Grin Excellent.

Oh dear, thinking of moving to Farnham from London.. we are but humble folk with average lives. Looking to put LO into good school, already viewed Highfield South Farnham and South Farnham Infants. We are packing up our lives for this, hope this area is not as described.. :( Dont know the area very well accept what im reading, South or North ?

IHeartKingThistle · 17/10/2018 18:33

Debra I live in Farnham and I love it but I don't live in South Farnham. Lots of people do because they want South Farnham school for the amazing results. That's not what I look for in a school but we're all different. Lots of people wouldn't live in my end of Farnham because it's near a (gasp!) council estate. But it's been perfect for our family and I would make the same choice again. It's what works for you. Yes there are some awful 'Surrey types' in Farnham, but those guys are everywhere, and there are also lots of people like me Grin

As soon as I saw your op title I knew what you were going to say! Couldn't agree more!

ToadOfSadness · 17/10/2018 19:56

I was born in Surrey, left to work in London, moved to London. Moved back to Surrey, then reluctantly back to London. I would have stayed where we were. It was in one of the 'snobby' parts with an older population, residents association and neighbours only ever spoke when they needed something or if the alarm went off to check we were OK. It was quiet and had everything I needed, I loved the house and garden, access to countryside, places to go, not to far from the coast.

I know the places with the blonde clones (and footballers) and OK to visit I wouldn't live there. If I could have a house like the one I left I would be back there tomorrow. Croydon is no longer Surrey, at one time it was, I lived there and it was part of the address, however just down the road is Surrey, Purley, Coulsdon, Caterham, none of which I would want to live in but not because of people talking about house prices, I just don't like it there. Woking, Reigate, Dorking and the areas nearby, yes I would move there.

IHeartKingThistle may I ask what school your kids go to ? This is all new to me, any advice would be much appreciated. We are also considering Haslemere, but not sure if that's going to be too quiet or far out ..
