To absolutely hate living in Surrey

Bestofthebest · 15/09/2016 23:47

I guess I have been here too long. Am 4 weeks away from escape to a very different part of the British Isles. All anyone seems to do here is go on about their sodding house price, how important their job is, the same one that has them getting the 0605 train like lemmings everyday. Socially people I habe found unfriendly and insular. It is practically a crime to be anything other than a Tory, but you can't show any interest in politics. The only acceptable subjects of conversation are how great you are, your job, Southern Rail and rugby. I hate it so very much I just hope there is a different world out there.

Ubertasha - You do realise how large London, Essex, Manchester and Bradford are, don't you? And that it's therefore very silly to dub them "shitholes".

Woking is in Surrey, it's no better than any of the places you've listed and there are probably several other examples too.

Starrystarrynight456 · 17/09/2016 11:14

ubertasha does anxiety make you rude and ignorant and well a little bit dim? Have you even been to the places you're writing off as shitholes? Granted in any big city there will be some less thsn desirable areas but each will also have some very nice areas so you're being very ignorant to dismiss entire cities as shitholes.

I can't speak for Bradford but London and Manchester both have nice areas....some of which may even be nicer than parts of Surrey. I don't know Surrey so I can't comment but I wouldn't be so small minded to judge it. Your post reeks of ignorance, and I'm sorry but anxiety isn't an excuse for that.

EreniTheFrog · 17/09/2016 11:19

Having lived all over the UK and all over the world, Surrey is undoubtedly the unfriendliest place I have ever been.

TresDesolee · 17/09/2016 11:33

Haven't RTFT but surrey is mostly served by South West Trains, surely. Not Southern. And yes SWT are crap but they're not anywhere NEAR as bad as Southern.

I'm nice and normal and so are all my surrey-dwelling friends. There are tossers everywhere; if you're determined to find them, you will. I've met some right wankers in Yorkshire and South Wales and Cornwall and Suffolk and and and....

GeekLove · 17/09/2016 11:42

More unfriendly than Bedfordshire even? That would take some doing!

Oblomov16 · 17/09/2016 11:56

There are loads of really shit places in Surrey. Some of them are rank. And many of them are right next to the most expensive places. Ha ha. Always makes me laugh.

I drive around, I go from Chelsea footballers mansions to slums of tower blocks, within miles of eachother. Is tres wierd.

The80sweregreat · 17/09/2016 13:39

I lived in s wales for two years , i found a mix, one woman was english but made a point of telling me how much she hated the english! Some were just snobs who wouldnt give the time of day ( because we rented our place and my hubby earned less than 100+k ) and others were absolutely lovely. I felt like a fish out of water sometimes , but you meet good n bad everywhere. Have visted surrey once or twice and it seemed ok. Im sure i wouldnt fit in though. Just a feeling one gets!

ShelaghTurner · 17/09/2016 13:46

Can't be bothered to read the thread - the OP was such a pile of bollocks. And yep, Surrey dweller here. Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

StStrattersOfMN · 17/09/2016 13:48

Well I was told where we were moving to was insular and unfriendly, but it's a world away from where we lived in Surrey, everyone has been really welcoming and friendly here.

Surrey - never seen so much casual racism, never lived anywhere like it really

whenthetimecomes · 17/09/2016 14:22

OP I totally agree with you. We lived in Dorking for several years and I found I was bored out my mind trying to make conversation with vacuous (yes mostly BLONDE) yummy mummies at the school gate. Yes, the conversations were mostly about house prices and commuting. Too many Tory tossers as someone else upthread has commented - enough said!

So glad when we moved away, haven't missed it at all and wouldn't want to go back!!

SandyPantz · 17/09/2016 14:25

I've lived all over, not just the UK but all over the world

I used to pride myself on the fact that I can put myself out there, make friends and make the most of wherever I live…..
.. . till I lived in Surrey

most unfriendly place in the world! And I've lived in some pretty insular/cliquey/classist parts of the US, Surrey keeps the title!

SandyPantz · 17/09/2016 14:31

I adore the Guildford area, and although there are plenty of these posh 'lie back and think of England and think about husband's credit card limit 4 x 4' mums in many a place, don't worry, we have our chavs as well, if it's diversity you're after!

Firstly, "chav" is pretty offensive

Secondly, what counts as "chav" in Surrey, is considered "ordinary" elsewhere, you're shop workers, nursery nurses etc & social houses. The way that perfectly ordinary otherwise respectable low income household were openly spoken about in Surrey was disgusting.

SandyPantz · 17/09/2016 14:31

your

GeekLove · 17/09/2016 14:38

I'm sure there are normal people in Bedfordshire too it's just never had I had to put up with so much low level rudness in daily life. I did try and volunteer and make friends but to no avail. 4 years thdre there and 0 friends that actually happened.
--didn't help that the youth group I volunteered at did think I was one of the kids as it turned out rather than a CRB checked postgraduate student - -

Bestofthebest · 17/09/2016 16:02

The rude and ignorant "shut the door and your way out" replies just confirm what I thought. Those that fit in here just cannot bear anyone else thinking differently. I will be delighted to leave.

ShelaghTurner · 17/09/2016 16:16

Dish it out but can't take it back? You're going to be one hell of a loss to the county.

LozzaChops · 17/09/2016 16:32

HI PapaverSomniferum - how many 'Combers are there here?!!!

Also - was it the train time that gave me away?! Hahaha!

BizzyFizzy · 17/09/2016 16:36

I love living in Surrey.

My train company is SouthWest Trains, so that must be the clincher.

Pagwatch · 17/09/2016 16:49

Crikey
I can't post anything because if I say I hate Surrey I just joining in stereotyping a county, if I say I love where I live (in Surrey) then it's defensive.

I moved here because at the time it was home to the only nursery that the consultant who diagnosed my sons disability considered could cope with his considerable needs.
I've met nice people and dickheads. I run a shop and my customers are mostly fucking lovely and the schools and charities that I meet through my son are fantastic.

I think if something jars with you that's all you see. I think dismissing a whole county full of proper rounded human beings because you don't like some of the ones you have met is sad.

If you genuinely have only met stifling, money obsessed bore then you should ponder what you are doing to so shockingly limit your ability to meet normal people. Because that isn't normal.

BizzyFizzy · 17/09/2016 17:06

I have to disagree with you who say great schools.

We've had to put our five in private and hence the anguished conversations about school fees.

Fortunately, as a teacher, there are plenty of places for me to work.

MargaretCavendish · 17/09/2016 17:25

Best if you think people where you're moving will be 'open minded' about people saying it's a horrible place with horrible people then I think you're going to be disappointed. Most people don't like where they live being slated, even if they are happy to take the piss out of it themselves. It isn't some strange Surrey trait.

SandyPantz · 17/09/2016 18:27

I lived surrounded by "great" schools - the culture in Surrey I found was that heavily tutoring outside school is the norm, so how much of the success was the schools and how much was the tutors?

Some people tutor where I live now, but it's not the baseline.

SandyPantz · 17/09/2016 18:30

Most people don't like where they live being slated, even if they are happy to take the piss out of it themselves. It isn't some strange Surrey trait.

Nope it's different in Surrey, because people don't just say "yeah, I like it" (which isn't dependant on others agreeing or disagreeing), they say what a good area is it (which IS dependant on others living there confirming it), and want everyone to aggree

BizzyFizzy · 17/09/2016 18:42

What I like about living in Surrey is that my town is very ordinary - has everyday shops - that I can walk to, and has a good community feel. I have the gorgeous Windsor Great Park on my doorstep. The train to London is 32 minutes. The M25/M3/M4 means quick access to the rest of the country, not to mention LHR-5 only 10 minutes away.

I grew up in Edinburgh so with a lot of the same opportunities with regard to access to culture, countryside etc. What Surrey really has in its favour is the weather/climate. Every time I think it would be time to move home, I remember the weather.

I live in a very suburban part of Surrey with noise from planes, trains and automobiles. I work in a leafy part of Surrey with single-track roads and birdsong!

5moreminutes · 17/09/2016 18:46

Sandy that's true everywhere! Try suggesting to a Yorkshireman/woman that Yorkshire is not the absolute best place on the entire planet...
