To think that a nappy change isn't so urgent

that you need to do it in the middle of the school playground during the morning school run?

Now it's been a long time since I've done nappy changes on teenies (have had extended nappy use x 3 due to SN) but I really can't remember ever having to change their bums during the school run.

Granted I've had numerous poonami and poomaggeddon incidents with all 3 of mine but tbh that was a get home, strip off and under the shower job rather than a stop right where you are and change them scenario.

Baby in question wasn't even weaning age so wasn't stinky, certainly not hoiking judgy pants it was just a bit of an "eh? Really?" Odd things you see on the school run moment.

Prepared to be corrected that it was somehow completely necessary, of course. So please don't flay me alive Wink

Oh, and I know it's really small stuff and all but I've got a builder hosing a ceiling with sealant and with my asthma I'm not allowed in the room so mnetting for something to do whilst I wait...

Perhaps the baby had bad nappy rash. When DD had it, I had to change her immediately because it made her incredibly sore.

I probably would do on a day like today - warm, still and dry. Firstly, who knows what plans they had straight from school drop off - maybe a 2 hour drive or a trip to the park (our park doesn't have loos)? My LOs get quite sore if left in poo for more than about ten minutes, especially if they're in the sling. I haven't done it myself but I can imagine several scenarios where the need/want would arise

Middle of the school playground does sound a bit exposed but I wouldn't necessarily have wanted to wait until I got home. It would depend on length of school run, whether I was actually going to go home next, extent of nappy rash etc. Been a few years though...

Maybe they were off out? Going on a long car journey or shopping, and this was the best option?

I was thinking nappy rash but im just thinking wouldnt it be a bit chilly on the baby bottom.I had a mum at work the other week change her baby on the lunch table ewww the toilet is 10 steps away

Yeah, it's a bit... um. I'd assume nappy rash too. I've had to change bums in some weird and wonderful places when there hasn't been a toilet, but I've always been discreet.

Don't really see the problem tbh. Open air so no issue of being enclosed with the smell. Baby far too young to be worried about privacy. Presumably it was not in the way of loads of kids/parents coming into school but was to one side. What's the issue?

Unless it was unsafe for me to park immediately, and you can have to wait some times when on a motorway, I have always changed nappies pretty much immediately. It's the best way to avoid nappy rash, and it seems mean to let them wait with a dirty bum. So YABU

Mini no it wasn't to one side, it was literally right in the middle of the playground!

I'd do it (allbeit discretely) if it needed doing. I've done nappy changes in some places that would cause some raised eyebrows amongst some MNers because my little boy had a very wet, or dirty nappy, or had nappy rash.

I'd probably do it in the car rather than where other people are tbh. I realise it wouldn't smell and the baby wouldn't care but your still wiping a bum and if it can be done away from a yard full of people I would.
My kids both have very sensitive skin but so long as I used Vaseline as a barrier they were able to wait a few minutes before a change.

Hang on, was this literally in the middle of the playground? If so, yanbu (can't even figure how it was done to be honest). If it was the back of a car or such, yabu.
I understand needing to change quickly, but never 'drop everything and change this very second' for a poo nappy.

Car boot is my favourite place! Grin as much a I enjoy changing dirty nappies You don't bother anyone else, it's still private, clean, baby sheltered from rain/ sun/ wind.

I often change my two in the car rather than wait as you don't know where there will next be proper facilities or whether they'll be clean and because I have twins it is much easier to change them while not having the other one out of the pushchair/car seat. I haven't done it in the school yard but I have pulled over next to school and done it out of the way as we were about to go into the eldest's assembly and I don't think anyone would have thanked me for that. Sitting in poo for ten minutes wouldn't be something i would want to do and if they have nappy rash, ouch! My school run takes at least half an hour to an hour start to finish too so I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I've done this a half dozen times probably. Kids really prone to nappy rash and sometimes it's not possibly to go in and use the school toilets.

There aren't any toilets in the local park though, so I think most parents have had to do an al fresco change at some point!

I'm guessing she wasn't doing it for fun, so there must have been a good reason for it. Most babies get sore if they're left for long, so I'd presume she either wasn't going straight home or it's a longish walk. Better to do it in the playground than in the street IMO.l

I would have chosen my spot carefully though, so as not to upset any delicate flowers who can't bear to see a bare babies bum.

I would at least have taken the baby to one side or changed in the pram, as it is a nice flat surface, but I always change as soon as necessary and practical to do so, and have often done so in the car before.

Was it laying down in the buggy? I have done that when it's been a runny poo that threatened to leak out - otherwise I'd have waited for the car. But generally I'll change them anywhere as long as we have the cover of the buggy!

I changed my LO on the cars parcel shelf a number of times. Its no fun having a poopy nappy. But yes, middle of playground a bit Hmm

I used to change mine wherever we were, nothing wrong with outside on a day like today, and my dc were stinky, wouldn't want to leave them because of nappy rash.
I do draw the line at cafe's, except for a changing room, obviously.

Soreness isn't the only consideration. My EBF 4 month old is very prone to ginormous poos. If I don't change him sharpish then they leak (yes I have tried many different brands of nappy and none of them are foolproof). So I tend to change him ASAP to avoid leakage. I'd never put him in the car seat with a dirty nappy, because I'd fully expect to have to wash the car seat afterwards. I would use the edge rather than the middle of the playground though Wink
