To think that a nappy change isn't so urgent

that you need to do it in the middle of the school playground during the morning school run?

Now it's been a long time since I've done nappy changes on teenies (have had extended nappy use x 3 due to SN) but I really can't remember ever having to change their bums during the school run.

Granted I've had numerous poonami and poomaggeddon incidents with all 3 of mine but tbh that was a get home, strip off and under the shower job rather than a stop right where you are and change them scenario.

Baby in question wasn't even weaning age so wasn't stinky, certainly not hoiking judgy pants it was just a bit of an "eh? Really?" Odd things you see on the school run moment.

Prepared to be corrected that it was somehow completely necessary, of course. So please don't flay me alive Wink

Oh, and I know it's really small stuff and all but I've got a builder hosing a ceiling with sealant and with my asthma I'm not allowed in the room so mnetting for something to do whilst I wait...

Middle of the playground is odd but off to one side with your back to the crowd, yes. If DD2 pooed which was a relatively unusual occurrence :( she needed to be out of it sharpish. I changed her in many an odd place.

Boomerwang · 14/09/2016 12:28

I've done it in a store before
There were no facilities and my newborn had done a stinker. Laid her on a pallet and changed her. I tidied up of course. The alternative was to wait upwards of 30 minutes to get home or to the nearest facility as it was a diy store in the middle of nowhere.

honkinghaddock · 14/09/2016 12:32

I've changed ds's in parks and playgrounds and once on the grass next to a lay-by (car boot was full) but I've managed to avoid in the middle of a school playground. He is too old to be changed in public now so we have to wait till there is a big enough toilet.

minipie · 14/09/2016 12:35

Well middle of the playground is daft purely because they will be in the way and the baby could get trodden on!

Off to one side, can't see the issue, even if it was visible so what?

WorraLiberty · 14/09/2016 12:36

It wouldn't occur to me to give this a second thought really.

I've seen far worse in the school playground, like parents hacking up and spitting in the middle of it.

cherryplumbanana · 14/09/2016 12:38

Middle of the playground -as opposed to the side - is a bit odd, but I genuinely cannot understand why anyone would have issue with nappy changing in a park? Unless you plonk the baby on a table where someone is having a picnic, why would anyone be bothered at all?

SouthDownsSunshine · 14/09/2016 12:41

I can't see the problem - I've done plenty of al fresco changes with dd. Especially if a poo. I would try and be discreet, but it's not always possible.

I'd much rather change a nappy in public than leave dd with a poo that is a) smelly b) going to aggravate/cause nappy rash and c) may leak.

Well I wouldn't have done it in the middle of the playground, I'd have done it back at the car, but yes, I would probably have done it prior to inserting either DS back into their carseat, as neither of them would sit "happily" in poo. Ds2 in particular was prone to burnt bum if not changed very quickly; Ds1 less so. But still no need whatsoever to do it in such a public manner.

Dawndonnaagain · 14/09/2016 12:47

Dd1 had psoriasis, if left too long the contents would ulcerate her skin, nappies were changed frequently and if we were aware of anything, immediately.

SalemSaberhagen · 14/09/2016 12:50

And when you say middle of the playground, do you mean on the ground? Or in a pram/pushchair/something similar

Happyhippy45 · 14/09/2016 12:54

Did she wash her hands/use hand gel after changing?
This would be the only thing I'd have a problem with.

BishopBrennansArse · 14/09/2016 12:55

On the floor right in the middle.

DC3 hates having a nappy full of poo and screams blue murder. In that situation I'd change the nappy anywhere reasonable (not sure about a playground) just so as not to have screaming all the way home.

allowlsthinkalot · 14/09/2016 13:01

Not everyone has a car to change them in! I wouldn't wait til we got home unless it was a couple of mins away and in the absence of changing facilities I have changed mine outside.

MrsJayy · 14/09/2016 13:03

Thats a bit weird the sudden MY BABY NEEDS A NAPPY CHANGE RIGHT HERE

BishopBrennansArse · 14/09/2016 13:05

Yep.
Boom, to the ground! Grin

Was the playground full of people sort of scattered around everywhere? So she literally just did it where she was standing? It just seems like it wouldn't be massively more discreet to go to the side. Have no idea without seeing the way the playground is set out.

I'm thinking tired mum who just thought "fuck it, i'll do it here". And a longish walk home. Plus perhaps baby prone to leakage/poonami/under the weather/nappy rash atm as mentioned by PP. Especially if it's the first time you spotted her doing it.

Intrigued how many people mention cars... some people do walk to school. Confused

BishopBrennansArse · 14/09/2016 13:11

Yep, waiting for the bell for start of school, kids playing, running round, nappy change slap bang in the middle.

In case of emergency yeah I'd go to the side tbh. I'd be worried a kid would fall on the baby like that.

I also walk (well, use my wheelchair). Car reference was re long car journeys etc referred to before.

I was thinking school pick up rather than drop off for some reason! Yeh with lots of kids running round it seems odd not to go to the side.

As an aside, OP, I'm wondering how you managed babies/toddlers "walking" with/without a buggy? Just curious after the latest disability/bus (Hmm) thread.

crayfish · 14/09/2016 13:23

I've done it in the car boot loads of times! DS has very sensistive skin so leaving him sitting in poo even for a short time can make him very sore, but generally I don't like the idea of it either - I wouldn't want to sit about in a dirty nappy so why should he? In the nicest way possible, I would mind your own business and get on with your morning without worrying what other people are up to.

MrsD28 · 14/09/2016 13:47

DS screams bloody murder the moment he has a wet nappy (tears streaming down his face and agonised gulpy crying etc) so have changed his nappy pretty much everywhere - usually in the pram though. That said, I would probably have moved to the side of the playground first.

MLGs · 14/09/2016 13:49

Oh, I would do it wherever they were, including playground if it was alot of wee (for a little bit of wee, I would obviously wait).

If a poo, go away from other people or somewhere out of view but in the general vicinity of wherever we were.

5moreminutes · 14/09/2016 13:54

Middle of busy playground clearly odd, but I minded a baby who would get really sore and inflamed skin if left even a few minutes in a poo, so changed her on grass verges a couple of times when out on foot! It was that or no fresh air as she pooed about 5 times per day!

It was a revelation to me as all mine could wait half an hour with no ill effects.
