I'm 43 and figure I am probably too old for any more children but deep down in my heart I'd love another...aibu to ask how old you think is too old?

I had my last (5th) at 50, and he's an absolute delight! He's just started school and life is getting easier again. I couldn't do it again now, but was fine at 50 with a baby.

sixandoot · 14/09/2016 07:46

Theoretically, mid-late 40s.
In my own situation it will be when I'm in my mid-late 30s because at that time my partner will be mid-late 40s.
Also for me age gaps would come into it. I would choose to try to prevent conception forever after the youngest child was about 15 months old, or whenever there would be more than two or so years gap between children in school classes. Totally personal preference though - lots of people prefer much larger age gaps.

Sgtmajormummy · 14/09/2016 07:51

I had my second at 38 and once the anxiety for the amnio was over I was fine! I've heard that over 35yo, conception is the hardest part but your body can cope with the strain of pregnancy pretty well.

However, as PP have said, a big age gap with siblings can be a bit sad. DD basically has three parents.

scrumptiouscrumpets · 14/09/2016 07:53

Comments like these make me feel weird - would pregnancy and childrearing have been a breeze if I'd had mine 10 years younger?

I interpret comments like these to mean that you've done something, it's in the past and you wouldn't want to do it all over again - because it's done with, not because you don't have the energy. At least that's what I read into it, apologies to the poster if I've got it wrong!

ScarlettO89 · 14/09/2016 07:53

I'm 27 and hoping to TTC when I'm 30. I think we'll only have one. Ideally I don't think I'd want to be pregnant past 35- the risks attached and I like the idea of being 50 and being almost free Wink

Vanillaradio · 14/09/2016 07:56

I had ds at 37, just about to turn 40 and am ttc no 2. I am thinking cut-off is probably 41 but that is also do with age gap to ds and we will see if we get there and we are still trying.
Fairydogmother I think you have been given outdated advise. I have t1 diabetes and no one at all mentioned my age the first time round (they are now but only to advise me I should get on with it!) or ever told me to have children by 30.

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 14/09/2016 08:01

35 for me. Combination of factors including that existing DD would be 7 and I wouldn't want to return to babies at that stage; I'd like my kids to be adults by my late 50s; I'd like (if possible) to be around and fit to help with grandchildren if they appear; and the risk of complications and multiples as you get older.

shins · 14/09/2016 08:01

I'm also amazed at people who say mid-40s..surely most people wouldn't have a choice by then?

EllenDegenerate · 14/09/2016 08:05

Well I'm having a tubal ligation later this year aged 33. This is because I will have five children by then and my family will be complete, not because of any arbitrarily imposed age restraint on my reproductive proclivity.

This pregnancy is no more physically taxing than my first eleven years ago, I have no doubt that is probably sail through a pregnancy in my forties as do many other women.

brasty · 14/09/2016 08:05

I am also amazed at mid 40s. Not about having a baby at that age, but about having a teenager at 60.

Sallystyle · 14/09/2016 08:08

It was 30 for me.

My last was born when I was 28

I had my first at 36 and second at 41! In now 44 and whilst I wouldn't be devastated to have another I probably wouldn't be jumping for joy either.

BalloonSlayer · 14/09/2016 08:14

I had my first two at 35 and 37 and considered myself an old Mum. Then had surprise pregnancy and had DC3 at 43.

My Mum said both her grandmothers had babies at 48. I reckon I would have been able to have one at that age (interestingly I had stop-start periods and odd periods throughout my teens and twenties, I do wonder whether I was a "late bloomer.") I am 52 now, no sign of menopause, today my boobs are killing me as period due in a few days, although I don't get this most months any more, so some of the time the old system seems to be still working - but very much doubt I could get pregnant even if I wanted to.

So . . . my age cut off would be your natural menopause age I suppose, unless you are unlucky enough to have an early menopause, cos that's not fair.

BertieBotts · 14/09/2016 08:22

I don't really have an age cut off point in theory. The issue for me personally is that I had DS at 20, so I would really love to have all my kids born before I'm 30. I'm 28 now and we want two more, so whether that will happen is questionable, but I'm hoping that we might be done by 32 at the very latest, so that (all being well of course) we have time to relax, travel etc in our 50s rather than spending all of our lives raising children.

If I'd had DS later then I would go for as long as my fertility let me.

SouthDownsSunshine · 14/09/2016 08:24

Currently pregnant with my second at 36, and this will be it for me. Less to do with my age, more to do with fertility problems and multiple miscarriages. This baby also has downs syndrome, and I don't want to put myself in the position of having 2 children with downs syndrome, so this is me done.

But, had I not had these problems I don't think I would have set an age limit. I've seen many of my friends have children in the 40s and cope amazingly well. I used to swim with someone who had all 4 of her children in her 40s, and she was like wonderwoman! So I think it depends more on your overall attitude and general health.

balletcats · 14/09/2016 08:24

I don't understand what's shocking about a teenager in your 60s

SpinningTotem · 14/09/2016 08:26

I'm pg with my 4th at 35. I must admit that pregnancy seems to be getting exponentially harder after about 32, but I'm sure this is completely individual to everyone. I just feel more worn out, joints more achey/creaky, and my body feels weighed down by the pregnancy in a way it never did with the others.

I had my first as a teenager and that pregnancy was by far the easiest physically, but far harder psychologically (wasn't ready). Would have been nice to have found a happy medium somewhere!

paddypants13 · 14/09/2016 08:28

Dh and I have said he will have the snip once I'm 40.

I'm desperate for another baby though so I may change my mind. (Obviously it's up to dh as well.)

80sMum · 14/09/2016 08:28

I had my youngest child when I was 25, but harboured a wish to have more children one day. However, once I reached 40 I felt "too old" and came to terms with the knowledge that I would not be having any more babies.

danTDM · 14/09/2016 08:34

I don't find anything shocking about having a teenager in your 60's either.

The question wasn't how many children/how did your life pan out/when did you meet dh/when did you have dc's/ when did you decide you didn't want more, it was what is too old?

Personally, I think 45 is the cut/off.

scarednoob · 14/09/2016 08:35

Had DD at 37 (first try, much to the distress of DP who'd fancied a few months of happy bareback shagging) and now 38. I would have said 39 would be ideal for a second and last DC, but DP is still not sure on that. as we are going to Barbados with family in January, zika might mean we wait longer than I would like, so I guess it might slip to 40... I know it's only a few months' difference, but psychologically it seems like a huge deal!

weeblueberry · 14/09/2016 08:54

35 for me. I had mine at 29 and 31 and now I'm fat and exhausted. I suspect there's a a good chance I'm only going to get fatter and exhausteder as time goes on...

RubbleBubble00 · 14/09/2016 08:58

Iv already ot children so when I turn 40. I'm getting sterilised as wouldn't want to have another past that age

Yorkieheaven · 14/09/2016 09:00

36 for me. Had first ones young so dd was number 4.

Physically it was hard but mentally easy.

Depends on circumstances though.
