So son has come home from school, disappointed not to get in the yr 8 school football team. Ok fair enough, there must be better players than him.... Well that's life move on etc!!! Oh no that's not the case. Two girls are in the boys football team.. Fair enough too if boys are allowed in girls football team... But oh no girls only... Trying to teach equality etc but this goes against everything!! Thoughts please....

Surely it should just be a football team and whoever the best footballers are should fill the team.

Mummyme1987 · 13/09/2016 21:01

Regardless of if they are boys or girls

katienana · 13/09/2016 21:02

Girls shouldn't be competing against boys at that age.

Waffles80 · 13/09/2016 21:02

Maybe they've not got enough boys who are good at football?

Don't worry, I'm sure your son's lifetime of enjoying make privilege will more than make up for this terrible slur.

Waffles80 · 13/09/2016 21:02

Why the fuck not katie?

plastique · 13/09/2016 21:04

They were advertised as boys trials and girls trials. Two very different teams.

waffles there are rules about when mixed teams have to stop; the poster's not trying to be goady or offensive! She's being factual!

neonrainbow · 13/09/2016 21:06

Yeah you're right. Girls shouldn't be in a boys team. There would be a big outcry if boys were allowed on a girls team.

PotteringAlong · 13/09/2016 21:07

Ah, ignore that, it's been raised to 18! Maybe she is being goady. As you were...Smile

PotteringAlong · 13/09/2016 21:08

I was thinking of rugby where it's 12 when mixed teams are not allowed from

ssd · 13/09/2016 21:11

seems a bit daft if girls are allowed in the boys team and boys arent allowed in the girls

who are they trying to encourage here?

AuntieStella · 13/09/2016 21:12

You can have mixed teams at that age. It's just that most schools and clubs don't. So they are very unlikely to have much in the way of fixtures.

They will be barred from playing both all-boys and all-girls teams.

So unless there's a local plethora of mixed teams, it essentially means a cop out from the competitive game.

Holymolymay · 13/09/2016 21:14

That's not equality. TBH I find it often works one way.
And honestly I have never felt being female to be a disadvantage like many around here.

katienana · 13/09/2016 21:17

I played in the girls team for my school. We played a match against the boys once. We got annihilated! Boys get faster and stronger quite quickly at that age. I think girls should focus on playing in a girls team. Women's sport is great.

plastique · 13/09/2016 21:17

I'm all for mixed teams, but a girls team and a mixed team!! The girls team did win the cup last year so there are some excellent players but hey just feeling meh and not fair on boys!!!

LaurieFairyCake · 13/09/2016 21:17

never felt being female to be a disadvantage

Seriously? Feel totally safe wandering about in that bikini? Or hijab? Or being fat or thin? Or going for a run?

No one hassle you ever just for having the audacity to be female and moving about in the world ? Hmm

Happy with that equal pay you won't get til 2065?

Waffles80 · 13/09/2016 21:18

So your pay is equal to that of men in equivalent roles? You won't lose out on your pension because of maternity leave? You won't face the increased risk of being a victim of crime? You won't be overlooked professionally in favour of a man? Or any of the other millions of reasons women simply aren't equal still. In 206.

Must be lovely round your way holymary

anotherdayanothersquabble · 13/09/2016 21:19

I can see why you might think it is unfair on your son that he lost an opportunity to represent the school and that the rules seem to have been broken in favour of the girls.

I have two sons and one daughter, all of whom play football. We have a constant battle with school over provision for competitive team sport for girls. Boys have plenty of opportunities both inside and outside of school to play competitive team sports at whatever level they are at. The same cannot be said for girls. If these girls are really good enough to be in the team they deserve the opportunity to play at their level rather than in a team of girls who have had less experience and less training.

In a world where Hilary Clinton is told to go home and be a grandmother but Trump is allowed to be a racist bigoted idiot, and male football players get paid 150 times more than female ones, I think we need to keep giving girls all the opportunities we can!!

acasualobserver · 13/09/2016 21:19

It does seem counter-intuitive that there is something called a boys' team but which also includes girls. Why not just have a mixed team plus a girls' team and then everyone would know where they stood?

Osolea · 13/09/2016 21:20

If there's a girls team and a boys team, then there absolutely shouldn't be girls on the boys team, even if they are better than some of the boys.

School teams shouldn't really be about who's best at a sport anyway, it would be better if they made it about providing opportunities for children to play team sports for the exercise and the teamwork aspect, regardless of how good they are.

plastique · 13/09/2016 21:23

To go to the 'boys trial' and 2 girls get in is not what I was expecting! We live in a large town with ample football opportunity for girls. My friends have some very talented girl footballers. The point I'm trying to make us...it's not on ...

OP posts:
neonrainbow · 13/09/2016 21:26

You'd be getting totally different answers if you had a daughter and 2 boys had taken places on a girls team.

Shakirasma · 13/09/2016 21:28

Perhaps the girls identify as boys (on practice and match days), isn't that how things work now? Hmm

Totally unfair OP.

MeAndMy3LovelyBoys · 13/09/2016 21:31

Those girls shouldn't be on the boys team. They have a girls team why isn't that enough? Even if they were better than some of the boys, they weren't good enough to be picked to join the girls team so should wait until next time rather than stealing a boys place.

Waffles80 · 13/09/2016 21:32

Aaaaaah, now some casual trans bashing to throw into the mix. Lovely shakira

Yes, people invent gender identity issues just to make lives easier for themselves...
