to hate vaping...

I'm aware that I may BU, but I really don't like vaping.
I don't like the big bulky vaping things that look like an old school cassette player, (Personally I think people who vape look like right plonkers!) and I don't like vaping in public!
It winds me right up - a few times I have been in places (waiting rooms, busses etc) where people aren't allowed to smoke, but they're sat there vaping... surely it should be classed as the same thing?
We don't fully understand the risks of vaping, so how do we know its not the same as smoking just yet??

YABU, judgey pants! How very dare you! I'm a vape convert and am busy converting friends from smoking. Smoking is one of the biggest health risks in the world and vaping, which is safer and cheaper, is making a massive difference. I bet you are judgey about lots of other things too. Looking down your nose at everyone else. Bully for you!

Hidingtonothing · 13/09/2016 14:00

I love my vape (and the fact that I no longer smoke) and really couldn't give a shiny shit if people think I'm a twat or don't like the smell. I'm another 'considerate' vaper, don't use it anywhere I wouldn't have smoked but will exercise my right to vape anywhere I am allowed to and happily ignore the cats bum faces of people who don't like the smell. There are lots of things other people do which, if I was an entitled twat, I could moan about, I don't because they are allowed to live their lives too and if they want to drown themselves in perfume/not wash for a week/have stinky dreadlocks and sit in front of me on the bus/insert other behaviour which affects others environment then that's up to them. I guess the difference is I have better things to do can't be arsed to start a thread on MN about them.

Yanbu

Slarti · 13/09/2016 14:12

You are inhaling something that isn't air. It won't end well.

We all do this, all the time. Seems a bit daft to assert that anything that "isn't air" will definitely be harmful.

ABloodyDifficultWoman · 13/09/2016 14:13

People who vape look like dicks

People who write like this ARE dicks.

Nasty thread - and it seems to have brought out more than the usual crowd of indignant and outraged beserkers. I might go back to smoking actually because people who don't vape or smoke stink to fucking high heaven of sick and jizz.

Do you see how dismissive and nonsensical that statement is?

Partybugs · 13/09/2016 14:16

Honestly, I hate vaping!!! The massive billowing cloud of 'god knows what' in the air I'm breathing, grown adults sucking on them like a dummy and vape shops popping up everywhere in town!

I know it's the lesser of the evils, and I too commend people who've given up smoking. But.. We DON'T know the full effects of them. So keep your billow vapy clouds of 'God knows what' away from me and my children!!!!!

hollinhurst84 · 13/09/2016 14:21

Public health England have stated they are 95% safer than smoking
And they're not ^^ "God knows what", the ingredients are visible and known

IcedVanillaLatte · 13/09/2016 14:21

"God knows what" i.e. propylene glycol (like they use in smoke machines at discos), vegetable glycerine (like you use in cooking), nicotine, and food-safe flavourings. Yes, these things aren't tested long-term for safety when inhaled, but it's not "God knows what" if you care to actually glance at a Google search result for three seconds.

Cocklodger · 13/09/2016 14:23

YANBU.
You can smell my lambert and butlers instead :)

Partybugs · 13/09/2016 14:26

Ok, I've learnt something today. Thank you. But still, nicotine? I still don't want to breathe that in. I'm just fed up of the vastness of the cloud of smoke, and how I have to walk through it. Does it really have to be so vast?

flumplet · 13/09/2016 14:26

I've always hated it. I hate the smell and I hate having to breathe it in almost as much as I hate having to breathe in second hand cigarette smoke. It looks wanky and we don't understand properly whether there are any health risks as yet.

JellyBelli · 13/09/2016 14:26

YANBU. I dont get how its socially acceptable to look like you're using a hookah, and blow stinking clouds over other people. Especially as you can get tobacoo flavoured juice!
The arguement 'its harmless' isnt really the point.

IcedVanillaLatte · 13/09/2016 14:27

BTW you can read about the health effects of exposure to smoke machine/fog machine vapour here if you like. It's not harmless, at peak exposure, long term, and it can have some short term effects (the amount of fog/smoke you're exposed to when one of these is going is a lot higher than of someone vaping, even right next to you). But it's not "God knows what".

Hidingtonothing · 13/09/2016 14:28

The doom merchants make me laugh, yes they did used to say smoking was good for you, science and research has moved on a bit since those days and, despite a huge amount of research they're still struggling to find anything harmful about vaping. The anti vape lot can't seem to help themselves though, they'll be rubbing their hands with glee if long term use (which most vapers are well aware is an area we can't possibly know about for some time yet) does turn out to have some ill effects, says a lot about them that they will actually be happy about other people's potential suffering. Regardless, the effects are still pretty much guaranteed to be an improvement on continuing to inhale the thousands of harmful chemicals in cigarettes, both directly and passively so the anti squad still baffle me.

Assam · 13/09/2016 14:28

I gave up a 20/day habit by vaping (not in public though I did feel a bit silly) I gradually reduced the nicotine and used 0% for a couple of weeks before stopping - that bit was no effort I just forgot to charge it up a few times & because I wasn't addicted anymore I just forgot about it. Can't believe I ever smoked.
I have an addictive personality though so now I'm 18 stone Sad

Sallystyle · 13/09/2016 14:30

FFS the hysteria.

I suggest some look at the evidence that has come out pretty recently. It is looking more likely than ever that vaping is pretty fucking harmless. I know some of you would prefer to not actually research the issue but you are acting stupid.

My vape is not going to hurt your child any more than your car fumes are going to hurt mine.

So no, I won't keep my 'clouds' of vape away from you or your children. I will continue to vape whilst walking down the street and I will be polite enough not to vape in closed public places. Get over it because it isn't going anywhere any time soon and as a smoker I was vilified, called dirty, smelly etc and now some want to say we look like dicks and we are twats. People are smoking less than they ever did, be happy that you are smelling vape instead of so much smoke and quit your fucking moaning.

IcedVanillaLatte · 13/09/2016 14:30

I've actually never seen someone with big billowing clouds of vapour outside of a specialist vape cafe for enthusiasts. I've seen a thin stream of vapour coming from someone's mouth, which dissipates almost instantly, but not immense billowing clouds. I would call that antisocial, and YANBU if someone's sitting next to you enveloping you in that, but there are a lot of vapers rounds here and I've never seen it. I vape now, but before I did I hung around with vapers and could only smell it if I said, "hey, what are you vaping today?" and leaned in closer to sniff.

Laiste · 13/09/2016 14:31

It's a great idea to help those who want to give up smoking. Personally i haven't come across anyone vaping somewhere where smoking isn't allowed.

One of my daughter's boyfriend's sister, 22ish, has never smoked - but has taken up vaping Hmm Now that's twatish!

Sallystyle · 13/09/2016 14:32

Funniest comment of the day Grin

Partybugs · 13/09/2016 14:38

Thanks for the link Iced

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 13/09/2016 17:38

"Honestly, I hate vaping!!! The massive billowing cloud of 'god knows what' in the air I'm breathing"

You are aware that the "air" we breathe has hundreds of chemicals in it from car fumes etc?! You will be worse off walking down the street next to a lorry than you would next to someone breathing vapour out.

Brazenhussy0 · 13/09/2016 17:56

Sniffs air

Yup. Self-righteous, wankery, shite comments about how vapers ‘look like twats/dicks/insert-other-sneery-insult-here’ definitely smells far worse to my nose than second-hand, strawberry scented water vapour.

Jesus fucking wept.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 13/09/2016 21:08

Yep, Brazen. Stinks in here.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/09/2016 22:16

If you hate vaping, don't do it.

I don't give a shit if I look like a plonker, I have massively cut my chances of getting COPD, lung cancer and heart disease. I no longer pose a health risk to my loved ones or the general public. My teeth have stopped falling out and I no longer smell. I've saved several thousand pounds and I no longer suffer from climbing-the-walls cravings.

It's not about you.

so how do we know its not the same as smoking just yet??

Because it's not fucking smoking! There's no combustion, no burning, no smoke.

Every time someone posts something like this it puts lots of smokers off trying vaping and makes them doubt that vaping will be better for them. This is what lead Public Health England to publish their review of evidence last year which concluded that e-cigarettes are around 95% safer than smoked tobacco and they can help smokers to quit:

We all agree that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than smoking. One in 2 lifelong smokers dies from their addiction. All of the evidence suggests that the health risks posed by e-cigarettes are relatively small by comparison but we must continue to study the long term effects.

And yet, millions of smokers have the impression that e-cigarettes are at least as harmful as tobacco and we have a responsibility to provide clear information on the facts as we know them to be. It is our duty to provide reassurance for the 1.1 million e-cigarette users who have completely stopped smoking to prevent their relapse. (from the statement signed by PHE and 12 other UK public health orgs)

Public Health England have also recently published guidance on Use of e-cigarettes in public places and workplaces. They are very clear that vaping should not be classed as the same thing as smoking, not least because there is no measurable harm to bystanders.
