Measure your BMI.

(Yes, I know, "BMI does not always work". The second part of this sentence is, however: "... e.g. if you are a professional athlete in certain sports, like weightlifting and wrestling". Professional athlete is someone who trains 8 hrs or more a day.)

If your BMI is under 25, you are not fat. What people say or think is irrelevant.

Exactly IonaNE.

BMI may not be perfect for everyone but it's a decent guide. At 5ft 6 a BMI of 25 for me is 11st 3 I think. That's what I'm aiming to get back to at the minute - well actually I'd prefer to be under 11st but I'll think about that once I'm at that point.

That seems fairly generous as a weight guide, and unless someone is one of those outliers with super heavy bones, or bench pressing twice their own weight on a regular basis, then I can't see why it's an issue, unless we're saying that there's no such thing as an upper limit on what is an optimum healthy weight for your body, which is bunkum as there clearly is.

CoolToned · 10/09/2016 21:25

So ok, again, I know I am overweight at this size, but my question was more of is that size considered fat?

Or is overweight = fat?

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/09/2016 21:28

I think so yes. I am 5'7 and look OK at 12/14. If 14s are a bit tight, i have rolls.

I do think.it depends on your frame. Two friend are also 5'7 and both would be fatter than me at 12/14 as they have tiny frames.

whywonthedgehogssharethehedge · 10/09/2016 21:37

I used to be a 14 and 10 stone which is the top end of healthy bmi for my height. I'm now almost 3 stone overweight but still in 14-16 clothes.

You need to assess how you look, how you feel, how out of breath you get etc as well as weight.

Clothes size means fuck all. I've clothes ranging from a 10 to an 18. I still have odd size 12 clothes I can get in, most are 14, some 16, odd ones 18.

PrincessHairyMclary · 10/09/2016 21:46

Well I guess to be overweight means that you would have excess fat and if you wanted to define yourself as fat then yes .i guess it would mean that.

But having excess fat (whilst not great for health) should not define who you are anymore than having fingernails or a particular hair colour. You have fat but you are not fat.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 10/09/2016 21:56

I read the other day (ages ago)

That someone wanted (i know this is vague) to change the bmi

Because when you get over 5 ft 6 (for a woman, i dont know about man as i am not one and therefore dont give a shiny shit) then build/bones are bigger...or something Hmm

Anyway on the current bmi 11 stone 6 pounds is the top end of my bmi (stone over at the moment....why? Why?) but if they changed it it would be 11 stone 9 pounds

I was very pleased....but they dont seem to be changing it ...why god? Why?

Will see if i can find the article

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 10/09/2016 21:58

Oooh no

I take that back just checked bmi and too end is 11,11

Yay!!!!!

Off to try and find article

rockingthelook · 10/09/2016 22:00

I am 5ft 9, and was fat at 16 stone 6 and looked just big all over , but had body blindness and just couldn't see it, now 5 stone lighter and look completely different, but still some people would class me as overweight. I have a defined figure now, slim legs, but have a broad back and shoulders, have even gone down half a size in shoes and you can see the bones in my feet, spine, shoulders and rib cage, bust size shrunken to 34d from 40DD! But do know what, i am delighted, don't give a stuff what anyone else thinks, I know I look and feel great, get compliments and at 50+ feel alive and active, we are all different and unique in our own way so viva la difference , be happy with what you've got, best way to look good is to have the biggest smile on your face not the smallest outfit you can wear with the label stuck out for all to see :)

I have quite a small frame with a lot fat over it

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 10/09/2016 22:04

proudmummyoftwo · 10/09/2016 22:04

I'm 5'3 and a tight14-baggy 16 and defo fat! However, down from a size 22-22 so feeling loads better but still a fatty! ShockGot a way to go

Adnerb95 · 10/09/2016 22:05

Cooltoned

There is no objective definition of "fat" so no-one on this thread can answer this question.

Fat is just a slightly nasty way of saying "overweight".

Velvetdarkness · 10/09/2016 22:33

I think anything above a 12 is chunky but you can still look amazing.

wasonthelist · 10/09/2016 22:42

Op you are not fat.

Stoneagemum · 10/09/2016 22:44

Does it pinch? Do you have rolls? Can you see fat? Use logic

littlepeas · 10/09/2016 23:27

I am 5ft 6in and a size 14 (weigh around 12.5 stone - the heaviest I've ever been outside of pregnancy - whoops). I've had a really shit year (lost my dad), so I am being kind to myself, but I am a stone and a half overweight - I feel it and I know it. I have started to feel better recently and am ready to tackle my eating/drinking habits, but am focusing on being healthy, rather than being thin.

For info - I have BIG BOOBS, but a small frame and I carry weight very poorly. I look good at around 10 stone, that's a size 10 for me.

KoalaDownUnder · 11/09/2016 06:43

The posters saying you're definitely overweight at 14-16 can go fuck themselves, frankly.

Nice. Hmm.

OP asked a question, I gave my opinion. Yes, I do think the vast majority of people are overweight at a size 16. No need to be telling people to go and fuck themselves.

KoalaDownUnder · 11/09/2016 06:48

And in answer to your more recent question, OP - no, I personally don't look at a size 14 person and think 'You're fat'. I do not think it is big enough to register as 'fat', in most people's eyes.

Dogcatred · 11/09/2016 07:11

Most people not regard a size 14 person as looking "fat", just normal or a bit chunky as said above. Don't ever go by sizing though of the clothes as it is so fake and changes. Go by a waist tape measurement and your actual weight. For the average height to shorter ones of us 8 - 10 stone is usually fine. 11 stone and a bit more than we like and doesn't look so good (but unlikely to damage your health - the thing that matters, but going towards a health issue if you're not careful unless you do loads of exercise - most people hardly do any exercise).

BarbaraofSeville · 11/09/2016 08:09

By your definition dog people who weigh those weights are likely to be size 8-12 so would be a couple of stone heavier at a 14/16 so therefore fat/overweight in most cases.

Or are we saying people are only 'fat' if they are in fact morbidly obese?

Like adverb says, there is no objective definition of the word fat, different people use it differently. I wouldn't even say it is meant to be nasty.

I might say I feel a bit fat right now, which I do, I have rolls around my middle when I sit down and I am in a 14 not a 12.
