...to listen to Stevie Nicks?! I've just 'discovered' her and I'm in love already. How have I gone this long not knowing she exists?

What songs/albums should I be listening to?

My parents had the brown carpenters album always played in the car on journeys, still love it.

StrattersHasACunningPlan · 09/09/2016 20:40

I am convinced Jilly Cooper based Georgie Maguire on Stevie Nicks.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 09/09/2016 20:41

Stratters - YES, YES! Totally a Georgie Maguire Grin

I adore Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, this footage of her singing Wild Heart blows me away every time m.youtube.com/watch?v=RPEhIoKeTg0

OhMrBadger · 09/09/2016 21:49

Oh yes Christine McVie singing Songbird is heart achingly beautiful. No cover version has ever come close.

Cocolepew · 09/09/2016 21:59

I'm also obsessed with Neil Diamond.
I play his greatest hits constantly in the car.

Lalaloopsy:
Beauty and the Beast makes me cry Blush always think of 'Vincent'.

Willow2016 · 09/09/2016 22:35

Christines 'Songbird' is one of my faves of all time simply stunning voice.

Welshmaenad · 09/09/2016 22:43

Crystal. Love it. Makes me a but tearful, no idea why.

Brekekekex · 09/09/2016 23:11

Oh I do love Fleetwood Mac Smile Landslide gives me goosebumps every time.

Dimsie's post about Maddy Prior put me in mind of two more fantastic female voices, both gone far too soon. The sublime tones of both Sandy Denny and Kirsty MacColl are unparalleled.

You might like Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. It's about her receiving a call from Bob Dylan years after they broke up and her recalling their relationship.

I love Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Kate Bush, Led Zeppelin, Suzanne Vega, Cat Power etc. Can be a bit heavy at times but I love songs you don't hear all the time. Girl from the North Country is one of my absolute favourite songs.

KitKats28 · 09/09/2016 23:38

Kirsty MacColl had the most beautiful voice. I have Absolute 80s on my radio most days and they play a fair bit of her stuff and it almost makes me cry.

Yes to the Seekers and the Carpenters. I loved them when I was little, and now they feel like the soundtrack of my childhood.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 09/09/2016 23:42

We were all FLeetwood Mac mad in my teenage years - we had Dylan and FM nights during which we played nothing else except Dylan and FM - I was in love with Dylan and the boys were all in love with Stevie - my boyfriend (we were 15) at the time told me that he lay a picture of her on the floor by his bed so when he rolled out of bed in the morning she was the first person he saw, I had a total girl crush on her and thought this was genius.

rockingthelook · 09/09/2016 23:43

Bella Donna , heard this first when I was 16, still love it, probably Beauty and the Beast my favourite track, but all good, Kate Bush another goddess, Blow Away amazing, not forgetting the majestic Heart, the Wilson sisters awesome, Barracuda an outstanding album, mind you Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes) has got it going on...want to listen to all this music now!

riceuten · 09/09/2016 23:46

"Sara" from Tusk is sublime

My mother was a pretty useless parent in a lot of ways but one thing I often remember to be thankful for is the music (yes, Thank You For The Music....ahem). The TV was rarely switched on but the vinyl was on constantly and the range of different stuff was immense. Rod Stewart to Richard Strauss, Abba to Zappa, STAX, Motown, Prog, Blues and outright pop. The upside is I am shit hot in pop quizzes. The downside? She did play rather a lot of Richard Clayderman too, so it wasn't all gravy......

Nick Drake ! Heart breaking voice, beautiful young man, wonderful arrangements. Start with a song called Northern Sky on youtube with the northern lights as background, sublime! We had it played at our wedding!

UnGoogleable · 10/09/2016 00:11

I only discovered FM in recent years too OP - DH had their greatest hits on his Itunes and I became quickly obsessed.

Landslide is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Stevie Nicks' voice is just so pure, and raw, and strong. I utterly adore her. Last summer I fell into a Youtube wormhole of watching FM documentaries and clips - like that 'Wild Heart' one linked above.

Here is my all time favourite. You need to understand the love story between Stevie and Lindsey Buckingham to fully appreciate the poignancy of the video. The lyrics, the looks between them, the little hand kiss at the end... breaks my heart.

I've always thought Stevie Nicks could so very easily have gone the way of Amy Winehouse. So lucky to still have her in this world.

ReadyToSignOff · 10/09/2016 00:13

So you never watched 'School of Rock' then...?

A slight tangent; try Fairport Convention - folk genius!

Squeegle · 10/09/2016 00:18

You have to hear Silver stream. It is really quite remarkable. And then watch her live with Lindsey Buckingham. I have been obsessed with this song for years!

BadToTheBone · 10/09/2016 00:24

I love FM, I saw them last year, it was one of the best nights of my life. It's rare anyone over here has heard of Tom Petty, I bloody love him.

Try Grateful Dead too, not so poppy but same era and fabulous.
