They'd screw their own grandmothers for a quick sale but can't be bothered returning a phone call/turning up on time to a viewing.

Experience today would bear that out Foxy. Large national chain where it's not worth turning up at an arranged viewing for a £400k house.

I had exactly the same experience earlier on this year (with a sale that eventually fell through). Countless messages left for the estate agent dealing with our purchase; emails; emails to his colleagues to try and reach him that way. Hopeless. When I eventually did make contact with him he whined like a child as the vendors weren’t returning his calls (he claimed) so “he had no updates to give me”. Thankfully we’re now on the brink of another sale about to complete and have had a totally different experience with a different estate agent. This time the person dealing with our purchase has been professional and constantly keeping the flow of communication going between us, the vendor and both solicitors – there are SOME (a minute number) good ones out there.

What annoys me most is the majority of them just unlock a front door to show you a property and that’s all. You ask questions about the property, the street etc and they have no further explanation. “Look on the local authority’s website” was a common response!

Ours was really helpful when we bought our first home, just for some balance!! Lovely guy, called us the day the house came on the market knowing it was just what we wanted and helped guide us through solicitor shenanigans. Nationwide chain too!
I have heard some horror stories though so maybe I was just very lucky.

Never met a decent one. Agree that letting agents are the spawn of satan. I'm sure decent ones must exist though!

We sold through an internet estate agent - very cheap, they did photos and arranged appointments, we did everything else. Went like a dream.
Bought through a small local agent - staff were bossy, patronising and the whole experience was extremely stressful.

I have no idea what they do to justify the massive fees they charge.

Just added another layer of bureaucracy to the whole process as far as I can see.

Ours did a reasonable job, but didn't do many of the viewings although we had arranged for them to do this. They always had good excuse. Anyway, after getting ££££ from our solicitor, on completion we heard no more! No thank you or anything. I've never spent so much money and not received an acknowledgement!

The EA dealing with our purchase sent us a lovely letter welcoming us to our new home.

I bet if we owed them money they'd have found us. We're still local, so can bad mouth them!

Agree DrDeluxeI totally see why the no frills internet agencies are making progress. Fixed fee, nice photos...not demanding a percentage to be rude and lazy.

Back to the thread ..... Yes ours are useless too, no follow up and no communication. So sick of them! If they cock up our open house tomorrow, they;re officially sacked!!!

I think sometimes that estate agents reflect the public they serve to an extent.

Lest they seem to be able to bring out the worst in vendors and purchasers.

Ours was excellent, kept our sale on track when it may have fell through. We gave him wine when it was all done. Very grateful for their help!

We've just binned our agents for being totally useless and unable to communicate anything to us, trying a new local area company now which do seem have good reviews in the local area as opposed to going for a national chain. I shall let you all know if I spot a unicorn in the office....
