Aibu to not iron bed sheets

lalaland1985 · 05/09/2016 22:29

We have a superking bed. For the past hour and a half I have been standing ironing sheets to put on the bed. I have only managed the flat sheet and pillow cases. I have the bloody duvet cover and fitted sheet to go! Aibu to fling it all on in its creased form!?

Why does it have to be life enhancing Nanny? I just do things I like/want to do. Or I just do nothing, flake out/rest watch TV, it's great.

PacificDogwod · 06/09/2016 19:28

Not-ironing is not-lifeenhancing, but it is certainly also does not-suck-all-joy-out-of-life like ironing does to me Grin

I may be odd in this respect because I really don't like smooth, cool bedsheets. My preferred fitted sheets are made of stretchy jersey.... hmmmm, cuddly Wink

Esspee · 06/09/2016 19:29

Ironing uses huge amounts of electricity so by refusing to iron anything I am doing my bit for the environment and our bank balance.

CaptainCrunch · 06/09/2016 19:36

I never iron anything. Even linen trousers. Everything I wear looks like Princess Diana's wedding dress until I heat up and then the creases just all fall out anyway. Ironing is a mug's game...no need for it.

ocelot41 · 06/09/2016 19:38

I gave up on ironing sheets looong ago...

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/09/2016 19:41

Goodness no, not if you don't want to. Had years of barely bothering to iron duvet covers let alone sheets. When the DCs had grown up I found if I can be bothered I really like the end result.

iemma321q · 06/09/2016 19:56

I struggle to even fold super king size sheets on my own!

MsJudgemental · 06/09/2016 20:25

Don't be ridiculous! Is someone coming to photograph your bedroom and put in in a magazine with your name and address?

MsJudgemental · 06/09/2016 20:29

Useless info: 20 minutes to iron a set of bed linen???? Are you running a 5* hotel?

justdontevenfuckingstart · 06/09/2016 20:36

DD2 is taking our iron to uni as she's the only one that uses it!

I do iron bedsheets, and my husband's work shirts, but have only started doing it in the last few years and find I change the bed less often now because I can't be arsed ironing sheets weekly. I iron nothing else. Maybe the tablecloth when guests are coming round...

However! My mum taught me a good trick to save time with the fitted sheet. Put it on the bed straight out the dryer, or straight off the line, and then iron it on the bed. It should only need a very quick go over.

I iron the flat sheet folded in half so it's quicker. I tend to go for duvet covers that don't need much ironing, satiny and or velvety ones so I only need to iron the back. Pillow cases get a quick go over.

There's nothing I love more than a freshly made bed with clean sheets after a shower. It's heavenly. But I admit the process is a ballache and feels like an utter waste of time. I normally do it of an evening with a film on or when I'm working from home and feel like procrastinating.

tanfield90 · 06/09/2016 21:08

My NDN irons bogroll, when he can get out of his straitjacket.

Seriously, ironing bedlinen is a pointless faff.

Rainbunny · 06/09/2016 21:20

Hell no! I even spent a bit extra on buying a crinkled linen duvet set (the linen is meant to be naturally crinkled IYSWIM). I do cheat a little and use my mini clothes steamer to steam out the wrinkles from the top of the flat sheet that I fold over the duvet though as it does bug me when the part of the sheets that show look wrinkled but mostly if I take them out of the tumble dryer and fold them or put them on the bed quickly they look fine.

cardibach · 06/09/2016 22:17

*Rainbunny^ I think you mat have missed the point!
I iron nothing. DD had shirt and tie for school and I didn't iron those. After 20 mins nobody can tell. Bed sheets? No chance.

Choosparp · 06/09/2016 22:18

No way, ironing bed sheets is a life moment lost.

averylongtimeago · 06/09/2016 22:22

Life is too short to spend it ironing.
No one is remembered for having smooth sheets.

butterfliesandzebras · 06/09/2016 22:26

The sooner everyone realises ironing is pointless make-work (not to mention bad for the environment and a waste of money) the better.

DailyMailPenisPieces · 06/09/2016 22:36

Do people not have lives? Shock

Thinkingblonde · 06/09/2016 22:39

I iron the duvet cover but not the sheets. My mum used the bedding as an ironing board cover, she'd fold the sheet so that it was the same size as the ironing board. She then ironed the rest of her ironing on top of the folded sheet and by the time she'd finished..hey presto (see what I did there) one crisply pressed sheet.

Mum also ironed tea towels, she reckoned it sterilised them. I think she had something there, I needed dental surgery; the oral surgeon told me to iron a clean tea towel to help stem the flow of blood after an extraction.

I also know someone who irons socks!

Nanny0gg · 06/09/2016 22:40

Why does it have to be life enhancing Nanny? I just do things I like/want to do. Or I just do nothing, flake out/rest watch TV, it's great.

Because of the sneering, superior attitude of some. non-ironers to those of us who think that bed-linen is more comfortable and people look smarter wearing ironed clothes.

Of course nothing has to be 'life-enhancing' , people can spend their time anyway they choose, but if they come out with the 'Life's too short to...' crap I assume they are doing something more important.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 06/09/2016 22:46

Ever since reading an article in the New Scientist in about 1990 about how bad it is for the environment, I have never ironed.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 06/09/2016 22:49

I know a couple of people who iron literally everything. Everything gets washed, then it gets ironed. Socks, bed sheets, bras, manky old dishcloths... Confused

Utterly baffling.

I do school uniforms and the rest can fuck off.

Unicorntrainer · 06/09/2016 22:56

Due to circs beyond my control, honestly, I send my laundry out to a lady who irons everything. I have told her many times not to iron bedding but she does. I will show her this thread and she will have a breakdown, or will swear very loudly and scarily!

FunkinEll · 06/09/2016 22:58

Get yourself 100% linen bedding and embrace the creases.
