Aibu to not iron bed sheets

lalaland1985 · 05/09/2016 22:29

We have a superking bed. For the past hour and a half I have been standing ironing sheets to put on the bed. I have only managed the flat sheet and pillow cases. I have the bloody duvet cover and fitted sheet to go! Aibu to fling it all on in its creased form!?

Ironing you say? Interesting...

We moved 2 years ago. When DD started school, after her first week I went to get the iron out of the cupboard, then realised I'd given it to our old neighbour A YEAR BEFORE. Had to go to Argos.
I only iron school uniform and I'm not really sure why as it ends up as creased at the end of the day as it was before I started ironing it.

Why would it even cross your mind to iron sheets. That's just madness. Put that time to better use.... like drinking wine WineSmile

happywithlife06 · 05/09/2016 22:49

When I had my first house, I ironed the duvet cover once. That was over 30 years ago, never done it since! X

lalaland1985 · 05/09/2016 22:49

I don't fold - this is where I'm going wrong obviously!

YANBU ... I only iron bedding if the house is on the market!

I've got John Lewis bedding with a sort of seersucker stripe - looks great with no ironing.

PoisonWitch · 05/09/2016 22:51

I iron maybe twice a year and I don't even hate ironing. Life is too short.

biscuitkumquat · 05/09/2016 22:51

I only iron 2 things, school uniform, and I'm training DS to do that himself & my duvet cover & pilows.

But, I iron the duvet cover once it's on the bed. It's so much easier.

DonttouchthatLarry · 05/09/2016 22:55

Life's far too short! I'm only going to lie on/in them all night so why do they need to be perfectly flat before I get into bed? I can barely bring myself to iron the clothes I wear let alone the bedclothes! Who's going to know anyway - do you invite all and sundry to inspect your beautifully ironed sheets?

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 05/09/2016 22:57

What is this "ironing" that you speak of?

Nanny0gg · 05/09/2016 22:59

They definitely feel (and look) better ironed.

But why do you have a flat sheet as well? Don't you sleep directly under the duvet?

eightbluebirds · 05/09/2016 23:01

Give up!! Or iron them on the bed

Uiscebeatha85 · 05/09/2016 23:01

I can't remember the last time I ironed something!

CecilyP · 05/09/2016 23:02

The short answer is no. Surely these modern polycotton sheets don't need ironing. I don't even iron cotton ones. I find that with fitted sheets, once you stretch them over the mattress, any creases seem to go anyway.

EBearhug · 05/09/2016 23:02

I find ironing quite soothing, getting everything flat and wrinkle-free. It's not too bad in front of a good TV drama. Also, I do think sliding into a bed made with properly laundered and pressed fresh sheets is one of the best things ever, and no one else is going to do it for me.

Don't really see how you can iron them unfolded, though. How do they fit on the ironing board if unfolded? Especially kingsize.

Sparklemummyx0x0x · 05/09/2016 23:02

Don't iron my bed sheets or any night wear. I have a duvet cover and pillow cases, which if put on the bed quick enough will soon smooth out once on the bed. I have a fitted sheet that stretches over the bed. Can't stand flat sheets.

When I still lived at home and before I knew better, I used to do the whole folding in half/quarters thing as my mum does the same.
I avoid ironing anything that I can get away with.

KP86 · 05/09/2016 23:05

If DH notices and cares point him in the direction of the iron.

Ain't got no time for that crap!

lalaland1985 · 05/09/2016 23:06

Nanny - no I have a fitted sheet then a flat sheet then the duvet. I sleep between the flat sheet and the fitted sheet.

I just always ironed the width of the board then moved it along. I'm 31 and have always done this. Feel ridiculous. Going to phone my mum in the morning and tell her it's her fault as she never ironed anything Grin

I sleep the same as OP. So glad to find another double sheeter.

I'm from Aus and this is the 'normal' way to do it in my experience. It keeps the quilt/doona/duvet cover from getting dirty and needing to be washed all the time.

Nanny0gg · 05/09/2016 23:10

Why do you need the flat sheet?

Would never occur to me to have one.

Pigeonpost · 05/09/2016 23:11

I only iron bedding for our Airbnb room, never our own. I fold the duvet cover in half lengthways, iron, flip over and repeat, Don't iron the fitted sheet at all. Why do you have a fitted sheet and a flat sheet ?!?

Pigeonpost · 05/09/2016 23:12

Ignore me, took me that long to post that you answered the flat sheet question.

MinonsMovie · 05/09/2016 23:13

Lets see if DH notices. Hmm

TheCraicDealer · 05/09/2016 23:20

A colleague of mine strips and washes her and her DH's bed, those of her two (adult) DD's who live at home, her own DM and her MIL and she irons it all every week. She gives off about about it but I've just told her I've no sympathy as it makes no odds and just doesn't need doing. She's a wonderful woman but I just want I break her iron so she doesn't have to do it for a while!

It would never occur to me to do it. I only iron shirts or work stuff that you couldn't get away with not doing. Everything else is just folded and put in a drawer.

thenightsky · 05/09/2016 23:21

Strategic drying is key to never having to iron. I never ironed anything bed related, never ironed any school uniform etc.

Hang on the line outside by the corners and a peg in the middle, so the wind smooths everything. Then fold sharply and precisely so no creases. In winter tumble dry and fold when still hot.
