We used a name to honour my FIL (but changed the spelling) so he is moaning that we might as well not have bothered. Should I change it?

I'm actually upset/annoyed. My FIL has an okay name (I don't love it, but we used my dad's name for DS1, so didn't mind using it) however both DH and I hate the way his dad's name is spelt, it's a 'unique' spelling.

So we used the original spelling. He is very annoyed claiming it's a completely different name and is giving DH a hard time about him preferring my dad and letting me walk all over him Hmm

Now I don't even want to use the blinking name!! WIBU to change the name? (Our son is registered btw)

Wetting myself at this... Grin

Could it possibly be an Irish spelling though??
(Clutches at straws.)

JiltedJohnsJulie · 04/09/2016 19:07

HandMaids that can't be true, surely?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 04/09/2016 19:07

Wow he's grateful! This is why we never went down the picking family names route as someone invariably throws a strop for some perceived slight or other. I'd go with something else, even Balonz!

But, jeez, Whillyam 😂

YelloDraw · 04/09/2016 19:11

I've had a big laugh at this! Whillyam so funny! No way!

purplebunny2012 · 04/09/2016 19:15

My mum named me after her late father. She put an 'a' on the end to make it the female version, but everyone knows I was named in his memory

Floggingmolly · 04/09/2016 19:34

No, naice, it certainly isn't. Shock. Liam is the Irish form of William.

LadyMumble · 04/09/2016 19:34

I couldn't help but Facebook search once you mentioned that was where the screenshot of the spelling was from...there are loads of them! I'm shocked.

TransvisionTramp · 04/09/2016 19:46

In absolute hysterics at this. I have a unique spelling of my name (Irish - but I'm not) and it drives me nuts having to tell people over and over how to spell my name.
I'm sure FIL must go through the same so why would he want to inflict it on your DS? Sounds like a complete dhick!

RunnyRattata · 04/09/2016 19:48

2kids it seems that some of them still do! Grin

Alidoll · 04/09/2016 19:57

Does your son have a middle name? if he does, just start calling him by that name instead.

One of my friends is called Elizabeth Rachel. Her Scottish friends call her Rachel but her Irish friends know her as Liz which caused a lot of confusion at an Irish / Scottish rugby match at Murrayfield once (her friends were "who's this Rachel lassie, is she coming to the game too?"). Seemingly quite common in Ireland to go by your middle name for business but first name with immediate family.

gemma19846 · 04/09/2016 21:00

I WAS going to say if you name baby after someone then NO never change the name. My daughters middle name is May after my mum and i wouldnt of changed it to Mai/Mae but with that God awful spelling i have changed my mind 😂 Either stick to William or change the name completely! He should be happy you have named DS2 after him!

wisba · 04/09/2016 21:27

To my mind these are two different names, they are neither spelled or pronounced the same way. Therefore you have not named DS2 in honour of your FIL. Do as you and DH wish, your DS your name choice.

Onefourseventwofivenine · 04/09/2016 22:22

Is your FIL will.I.am? I think I've just given myself an injury trying not to laugh out loud and wake DD. Surely your FIL can see that your DS is going to have problems with his name spelled like that? He's being exceptionally ungracious about you naming your DS for him, isn't he? There's no tradition of naming DCs for living relatives in my family, but the middle name I chose for DD, because I love it and its meaning, just happens to be my late Dad's beloved aunt's name. I didn't even think about it, because she was known as something else, but my Dad was really touched that I'd chosen that name, and didn't even bring up the fact that his Aunt Faye (her given name, not the 'aunt' part, obviously) was known by everyone as Aunt Fanny. Not once did he complain that his GD didn't have Fanny as her middle name, not once.

francii · 04/09/2016 22:25

DS2 is named after my father, but I changed the (Irish) spelling because my dad's name is extremely common in Scotland. My dad was still touched we named him after him and understood the spelling difference. Your FIL sounds petty and surely he knows from experience that it would be a nightmare for you having to correct people on the spelling constantly! (Like we have to with DS Blush )

francii · 04/09/2016 22:26

*changed to

leccybill · 04/09/2016 22:30

My DD loves Willy ham on her sandwiches. All cut into teddy faces and that. Lovely.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 04/09/2016 22:39

To my mind these are two different names, they are neither spelled or pronounced the same way. Therefore you have not named DS2 in honour of your FIL.

Hmm OP will be quite aware of how her FIL's name is pronounced I'm sure.

YANBU. How old is DS? Given that FIL isn't satisfied and you're not keen I'd change the name.

UterusUterusGhali · 04/09/2016 22:49

You couldn't BE more reasonable!

Whillyam is just ludicrous. You'd be laughed at by the registrar once you left the office. That'd probably make their "stupid-names spreadsheet" and spoken of at every Christmas party for years.

Grin at Stewie Griffin pronunciation.

My mother is called Margaret, and I thought of honouring her name by using a derivative. Eg marguerite, daisy etc, as I don't like Margaret. She was cool with that. But she's not unreasonable either.

DancingOnMyOwn · 04/09/2016 22:51

Whillyam Grin (even auto correct tried changing it to William) Grin

Beeziekn33ze · 04/09/2016 23:19

Just have a quiet sit down with DH and discuss your favourite names for a boy. Sure you'll come up with one you both like which suits DS2. Take no notice of Old Father Whillyam!

GiddyOnZackHunt · 04/09/2016 23:34

Maudlin surely Marthew Chancler Carpintir made this frame 1605.'" means "Matthew Chancellor, carpenter made this frame 1605"

BeaLola · 04/09/2016 23:47

I have a dear friend who used to be a registrar. One couple called their DD Armani and then came back and complained to him that it "wasn't spelt proper". When he queried it they said " everyone says it's spelt different in the books " ..... Turns out they meant Hermione !

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 04/09/2016 23:54
