We used a name to honour my FIL (but changed the spelling) so he is moaning that we might as well not have bothered. Should I change it?

I'm actually upset/annoyed. My FIL has an okay name (I don't love it, but we used my dad's name for DS1, so didn't mind using it) however both DH and I hate the way his dad's name is spelt, it's a 'unique' spelling.

So we used the original spelling. He is very annoyed claiming it's a completely different name and is giving DH a hard time about him preferring my dad and letting me walk all over him Hmm

Now I don't even want to use the blinking name!! WIBU to change the name? (Our son is registered btw)

Your child, your choice. If he is upset, that is also his choice. You definitely don't have to pander to him. William is a lovely name. Keep it if you like it, if not change it. Do what best suits you and your child. Plenty of parents change their children's names when they are little.

ConfusedAsEver · 03/09/2016 16:33

So sorry! I had no idea how many comments this would get (very surprised)

No cultural reasons, I'm assuming... I don't know FIL's parents, but DH says there isn't.

I'll read all the comments after cooking dinner.

Fuck. No.

He's a loon. There is no excuse, or reason, to spell it like that. Why make your child's life difficult? Can you imagine growing up with that spelling and having to constantly explain it and correct people every time you meet someone or complete a form? Just no.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/09/2016 16:35

Oh OP, that is absolutely hilarious, what a great laugh I've had over that, never expected that crazy mad spelling 😂😂😂
You mustn't spell it that way, silly man, wanting you to inflict that on your Son.
My ribs are aching.

nannybeach · 03/09/2016 16:37

Your child, your choice of name

faintlyoptimistic · 03/09/2016 16:39

This might be the best thread I've read. I literally cried through the first three pages, even snorting at cool whip!

vladimpaler · 03/09/2016 16:42

Tell you FIL that "it was really nothing"....

Fans of The Smiths will hopefully get that reference.

What a tragic way to spell a name, and an equally tragic reaction to your name change. Arsehole.

AppleJac · 03/09/2016 16:47

There is no way i would of put that spelling on dc birth certificate

LlamaDrama · 03/09/2016 16:49

I bet if you look back over FIL's family history, he was named after a grandparent or uncle named William, and his parents decided to update the spelling. That would piss on his bonfire!

GoldFishFingerz · 03/09/2016 16:52

Awful spelling! In essence it's the same name though, so just ignore fil.

ladylambkin · 03/09/2016 16:52
Grin
LoserDust · 03/09/2016 16:53

So he's annoyed because you won't use the a name that is spelt like it should be some kind of penis discharge. What the fuck

Gmbk · 03/09/2016 16:53

😂 😂
Best thread in a while, willy ham!

ineedbanoffee · 03/09/2016 17:02

I don't even know why people are saying it's not honouring somebody by changing the spelling. My name is unusual and has an unusual spelling. If either of my children ever wanted to call their children anything in the same ball park as my name, and if they also told me it is because they like me enough to include some reference to me in their child's name, I would think it was a lovely, lovely thought and wouldn't give a flying fuck how they spelled it. HIBU. Totally.

Handbagsandgladrages · 03/09/2016 17:04

Sounds like a really crap nickname for a foreskin 😂😂😂

Bitofacow · 03/09/2016 17:11

Mad as a box of frogs. Total fruit case.

Excellent thread.

Anyone else's name we can laugh at?

gillybeanz · 03/09/2016 17:14

Perhaps your problem was honouring gps rather than finding names you really like.
That spelling is terrible though.

nicenewdusters · 03/09/2016 17:14

See you're off to cook dinner OP.

Please tell us you had ham, egg and chips! With Yum-Yum doughnuts for pud.

ConvincingLiar · 03/09/2016 17:19

Is he actually Whillyam on his birth certificate or has he rebranded himself like Madonna/Prince? Does baby have his surname?

William is a nice name. I wouldn't change it. I certainly wouldn't inflict a life of an unusual spelling on my child.

RebeccaCloud9 · 03/09/2016 17:25

Willy ham reminds me of the Friends ep when Joey needed a foreskin for an audition but was circumcised, so Monica fashioned him one out of cold meat Grin

silly putty was the winner rebecca!

do we promounce it like cool WHip op?

nicenewdusters · 03/09/2016 17:31

Rebecca Grin

Love the rebranding idea ! Maybe he's really called Gerald, or Derek, or Malcolm, but fancied a future as a club DJ ?

Ezzie29 · 03/09/2016 17:32

I have a very common name spelt a slightly unique way and it does "feel" like a different name to the normal spelling. My friends agree, so not just me who feels that way. So I can sort of see his point but I would be never actually point it out if it was me! I'd just be chuffed to be thought of.

againstvaw · 03/09/2016 17:51

Was FIL named after Pussycat Willum?
