to think that we should pay more in tax?!

I am wondering whether tax rates should go up rather than public services being cut. When I first started working tax rates were around 33% and now they are down to 20% and services are being cut. More tax should be raised from large companies and from the rich but I also think that if we want to keep our services including the NHS then we all maybe need to pay more in tax. any views on this?

I agree, I'd happily pay more tax to safeguard services.
I'm pleased that some of the efficiency drives have happened as I don't think civil set ants should travel first class and I think some areas have been too top heavy with senior officials and not enough 'doing' staff. I think there comes a time though where we need to pay more.

No. I do most definitely think company profits should be distributed more fairly though instead of all sucked up my the tiny percentage at the top while many many employees of hugely profitable companies need state benefits to feed themselves.

Well I'll take liberties to assume that you could afford these higher taxes or you wouldn't be proposing them, but not everyone could just magically find the extra money, especially. If you've not had a pay rise. There's nothing more annoying and grating than an "I'm alright Jack. It won't effect me and mine so to hell with the rest of them.

I pay a lot of tax. But like people who pay a lot of tax I'd only be happy to pay more if the big boys paid tax at all.

yes - as well as clamping down on tax avoidance schemes; Starbucks, Amazon, Westwood etc.

the personal allowance has gone up quite a lot, but we've got way too many people for our services. Advice to someone in this household situation would be to spend less and raise income. We could cut quite a lot of waste (HS2, management consultants etc etc) but we need to bring in more. The extra people aren't leaving.

I'd be happy to pay more tax but only in the form of VAT so that it was fair and that everyone was paying it, including the wealthy retired.

But why does the NHS need money? Isn't it going to get something like £44 million a year now that we're leaving the EU?

I agree that there are areas (organisations and sectors) that aren't paying their way at the moment. But I also agree that I would rather pay higher taxes and get great services than pay lower taxes and see the cuts continue

Including national insurance I pay 50% - I think that's enough.

I agree OP, it's the only fair way to make good quality health, education, etc available to all, not just those who can afford to 'go private' or buy expensive houses in good school catchment areas.

But I agree with PP that more should be done firstly about big businesses and high earners who are avoiding paying tax. But this government will never do that because then all their rich friends will be worse off.

I don't think low earners should pay more tax but those on high wages, over £30k a year or whatever, should pay more. And the mega rich, say over £100k should be paying at least 50% again.

What about those of us who live hand to mouth as it is? How are we supposed to find the extra cash to pay bills and buy food if we are paying higher tax bills?

I don't want to pay any more a all thank you. I would rather see:
a) Everyone paying what they owe
b) A fairer allocation of public services
c) Greater efficiency - there is a lot of waste

I feel the same OP. When services for the worse off are being cut I think taxes are a potential income generator. I am a higher rate payer, and wouldn't object to modest rise.

I agree there are other ways to raise income (reduce tax avoidance, ensure public services are efficent etc) but I cannot help feel that we need to pay more for what we are used to - universal healthcare etc.

As for the working tax credits, I would much rather we found a way to insist employers pay a living n the first place, rather than pay peanuts which are then subsidised by the tax payer. This appears to be a benefit for the employees, whereas its really a subsidy for the employer, keeping their wage bill down.

YANBU. Even though the tax-dodging fuckers at Google aren't paying their fair share, I'd still pay more tax in order to have less inequality.

I hate it when people say 'I don't have kids, so why should I pay for schools?' etc. Go and live on the moon, no taxes there (not much else, either).

I don't think a rise in income tax is fair, it penalises workers for earn enough to pay tax whilst those taking the most from the system get away with paying nothing and gain the most.

Cutbacks should be looked at first, ditch things we don't need like maternity grants etc, tigthening up on businesses and the self employed paying tax next with few or no loopholes and time limit claims to ensure help from the state is short term not years.

Push tax payers too far and they will leave or not bother working.
