To be thoroughly bewildered by the success of Chris De Burgh?

Just watching him being interviewed by Aled on Weekend and now performing live.

I have always found him to be thoroughly unattractive in a slimy creepy kind of way, he has zero charisma, his voice is weak and warbly and really not pleasant to listen to and his song writing is beyond dull.

Yet he's unbelievably rich and successful and on his 21st album.

Confused

Who buys his stuff? Shock who goes to his concerts? Someone must! I just don't get it. It's making me irrationally irritated to think that there are people out there who actually like him and love his work. It's just not right. IANBU. You know it.

God, that was really garbled. Sorry.

user7755 · 28/08/2016 10:19

Bruce Springsteen doesnt belong in that list. Neither does Billy Joel, but definitely not Bruce Springsteen.

Incredibly talented and comes across as a genuinely nice and principles man (and he's hot and puts on a fantastic show).

whitehandledkitchenknife · 28/08/2016 10:21

Bruce? BRUCE? On the same list as CDB? Shocking.Blasphemous and this on the Lord's day
Badlands - now there's a tune.

Blerg · 28/08/2016 10:21

I agree on CDB - not my cup of tea. I love Billy Joel though.

YvaineStormhold · 28/08/2016 10:21

His autobiography comes out soon, user

Can't wait especially for the photos

user7755 · 28/08/2016 10:22

That's DHs birthday present sorted - DH has a big man crush!

Darwinisafish · 28/08/2016 10:22

Saw CDB live twice in the 80s. Everyone in school was obsessed with playing In a country churchyard on their new guitars. I think it was even a wedding favourite for a while. Then he shagged the nanny while his wife was recovering from a riding accident and lost a load of fans.

Have seen Bruce 5 times. They are in a different league. Yvaine....I may have been at the concert as you Smile

ludog · 28/08/2016 10:22

C de B's daughter won Miss World a few years ago, I don't know where she got the DNA for her height as she's about 7 feet tall and he's only about 5! (Slight exagerationWink )

insancerre · 28/08/2016 10:23

I think I must have different musical tastes to most of mumsnet
Here are some more singers I don't like
Madonna
Michael Jackson
Meatloaf
Whitney Houston
Mariah Carey
Robbie Williams
Freddie Mercury
Roman keating
Lady gaga

I've never bought any record or chosen to listen to anything by any of them

YvaineStormhold · 28/08/2016 10:24

"Working in the fields
til you get your back burned
working neath the wheels
til you get your facts learned
Honey I got my facts
Learned real good right now"

Why do I find those lyrics so bloody sexy??

YvaineStormhold · 28/08/2016 10:24

Leeds, Darwin?

YvaineStormhold · 28/08/2016 10:26

user so has DP - but it's more of a deep, abiding lifelong love than a crush.

It's my dream to somehow co-ordinate a meeting between the pair of them. It'd just be amazing of course I'd need to be there to support DP

Darwinisafish · 28/08/2016 10:28

No Dublin Yvaine.
We got local boy Bono rock up on stage too.
At least it wasn't CDB.

whitehandledkitchenknife · 28/08/2016 10:31

Got Bruce on a youtube loop now. Oh my fans self with hand

Namechangingbastard · 28/08/2016 10:32

You can all stop it! Chris de burgh is the soundtrack to my sex life! It's what we used to play so the kids wouldnt hear us shagging! I luff him I do! and I adore James blunt too so ner ner!

Darwinisafish · 28/08/2016 10:33

I heard that autograph story a while back too.

There was an authorised Bruce Biography released a couple of years ago. I got about half way through, An autobiography would be much more interesting.

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 10:36

CdB was the soundtrack to your sex-life?
That's just wrong, you filthy perverts.Grin

Nellyphants · 28/08/2016 10:40

Yvaine that Bono Springsteen story is an urban myth. I've heard so many people who swear it happened to their cousins mother in laws mate!

YvaineStormhold · 28/08/2016 10:41

Chris de Burgh as a soundtrack would certainly ensure the kids couldn't hear us shagging.

Because we wouldn't be Grin

YvaineStormhold · 28/08/2016 10:41

I guess I should never believe Ken Bruce, nellyphants

I thought it sounded a bit like the James Dean motorbike story, but on the other hand also sounds like something he would do.

Oh well.

dotdotdotmustdash · 28/08/2016 10:42

Him and his music were of their time and obviously don't stack up to current preferences, but they were what many people liked back then.

It's not fair to compare, music tastes have changed so much over the past couple of decades. I don't hate his songs, just like I don't hate the songs of Manilow or Neil Diamond. They all wrote songs for the conventional listener. Other singers were edgier and they are remembered for their originality rather than a string of mainstream hits. The music industry needed both.

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 10:43

Perhaps stuffing their heads under the pillows to drown out the droning is what floats their boat?
Sort of asphyxia du Burgh?
Like I said, perverts Wink

RuggerHug · 28/08/2016 10:49

I realised I was officially getting on in years when I turned into my DM through liking 'a spaceman came travelling' at Christmas. And Boney Ms songBlush I have no idea what CDBs appeal is but at least it's not Joe Dolan!

MandyFl0ss · 28/08/2016 10:50

I agree with the OP and with the 2 lists that have been added by previous posters, except from the bit where Bruce Springsteen has been included. That's just so wrong. Born in the USA and Dancing in the dark are really naff songs in my opinion, but listen to 'Paradise' and the story behind it, or simply watch him life. He's larger than life that man.

Nellyphants · 28/08/2016 10:51

What's wrong with A bit of Joe, Rugger? He did a great version of oh Holy Night!
