To be thoroughly bewildered by the success of Chris De Burgh?

Just watching him being interviewed by Aled on Weekend and now performing live.

I have always found him to be thoroughly unattractive in a slimy creepy kind of way, he has zero charisma, his voice is weak and warbly and really not pleasant to listen to and his song writing is beyond dull.

Yet he's unbelievably rich and successful and on his 21st album.

Confused

Who buys his stuff? Shock who goes to his concerts? Someone must! I just don't get it. It's making me irrationally irritated to think that there are people out there who actually like him and love his work. It's just not right. IANBU. You know it.

LineyReborn - I saw him live at Newcastle City Hall circa 1976 just before his first album "Far beyond these Castle Walls" came out.

He was the support for Gallagher and Lyle. There was just him and his guitar - no band. I thought he was really good.

Then he came and sat in the row behind us to watch G&L and we were all too shy to speak to him or ask for his autograph.

CdB gives me the creeps. It should be remembered that his wife was in hospital with a broken neck when he sgagged the nanny. Nice.

3littlefrogs · 28/08/2016 14:34

That should be 1974 - just looked it up.

God - I am so old.

seaviewer · 28/08/2016 14:40

It's his pronunciation of the word dance as darnce that maddens me enough to make me hate the whole song. If it was meant to be pronounced darnce it would have a bloomin R in it.

TheEagle · 28/08/2016 14:50

Don't Pay The Ferryman and Waiting for the Hurricane were 2 of my favourite songs as a child.

I also love Lady in Red, I'm not ashamed.

Neil Diamond's songwriting is excellent - Red, Red Wine is a fantastic song.

Bruce Springsteen sure can fill a pair of blue jeans!

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 14:53

Don't pay the ferryman?
Good luck with that on P&O Mr DeB-urgh

gabsdot · 28/08/2016 14:54

I like his early stuff, pretty lady in red. I loath that song.
I saw him in concert a few times in the 80s and they were great shows.
I didn't think he was still on the go.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 28/08/2016 14:55

ImScarlet! Nathan Carter does not appeal to tweens. He appeals to middle aged mammies. Like my mum and her mates. My mums friend tried getting tickets and they were sold out. On the off chance I went in his FB page and there was a comp for tickets. I entered and won. Earned me lots of brownie points. :o

I've always had a thing about CdB and not in a good way, I find him seriously creepy, and as for shagging to his music Shock

I put Cliff R in this category. He may have talent but it certainly isn't to my taste understatement

Someone mentioned Daniel O'Donnell up thread. I always thought he was a bit strange too. Well.... I spent a bit of time with him this year and he was a seriously nice bloke! So I've revised my opinion of him but not his music

Anyway who disses Freddie Mercury will have me to answer to, how very dare they, he is legend!

BrendaFurlong · 28/08/2016 14:56

This is the only CdeB song that is allowed in this house is Bill Bailey's timeless parody, Beautiful Ladies.

BrendaFurlong · 28/08/2016 14:56

And that made no sense. Oh well.

Walkacrossthesand · 28/08/2016 15:03

A lot of CdeBs music is storytelling. 'Don't pay the ferryman' (till he gets you to the other side) is, I think, a ghostie/mythical story. Some lovely but sad songs about ww1 ('song for you'), espionage ('midnight in Moscow'), and the loss of an 'old friend' . I love it - and Elton, Billy and Bruce too. And Simon & garfunkel, BTW...

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 15:09

You don't have to justify your bizarre love of the Burgh Walk.
The heart wants what it wants (profound)

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 28/08/2016 15:12

A creepy creepy little man. Shudder. Bill Bailey did a funny song about him once, off to try and find it.

Carry me like a fire in your heart is such a sad song. Sad

There are posters on this thread who are obviously dead inside. Shock Angry

Excuse me whilst I order my new CdB duvet set from Amazon.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/08/2016 15:28

Isn't Lady In Red mentioned in one of the Jilly Cooper books?

Barry Manilow once got me through some awful babysitting (he wrote the soundtrack for Thumbelina), so I like him now!

Togaparties · 28/08/2016 15:32

A spaceman came travelling is great at Xmas although one line drives me nuts. "light years of time" just makes no sense, a light year is a measurement of distance.

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 15:35

Yes, I really liked Taggie till she revealed her love of the "gorgeous song".
Still, she got Rupert the shagger in the end.

BishopBrennansArse · 28/08/2016 15:43

Hmm. DeBurgh's wonderful complex compositions. Such as

Dot com.

KatieScarlett · 28/08/2016 15:45

Was that really him?
GrinGrinGrin

FlowerOfTheValley · 28/08/2016 15:47

Lady In Red is dreadful but he has done some cracking songs amongst the dross. However I draw the line at putting him on the same list as Bruce Springsteen!! All kinds of wrong.

Joins the gobsmacked club at 'Who's the boss'. You can't fail to listen to Dancing In The Dark without passion, feeling and emotion.

Cary2012 · 28/08/2016 15:54

I have to report this thread and get it removed. It is offensive.

I will need counselling to recover.

I simply can't have my beloved Bruce mentioned it that list, with the likes of CDB. It has to be against the guidelines.

Need to go and lie down in a dark room, and listen to 'The River' to recover.

Funnyface1 · 28/08/2016 15:57

I don't like the look of him and don't know another thing he's done, but I can't help really liking "lady in red"!
