AIBU?

To hate "Viral Facebook Shaming"?

I'm not talking about missing people, pets etc - I think it's great for that that pictures can be shared.

I just read a shared post where someone is offended that someone pushed past her to get on a train and didn't offer her a seat (she's pregnant). A photo of the offender is attached. This person could not have been aware of their actions/ on the spectrum maybe and now has their picture shared globally to show what a wanker they supposedly are.

The same thing happens in local groups where someone has taken a picture of a car complete with number plates and rants about some misdemeanour they have done. Usually accompanied with, "I had my kids in the car you wanker" and cue loads of comments such as "Aw hun, I'll get xxx to break their legs"

AIBU to find this type of vigilante style shit annoying on Facebook? Before the, "if it gets on your nerves so much delete your account" brigade arrive it's a small annoyance and doesn't take over my enjoyment of Facebook but I just find it really distasteful. I could not be aware I've done something awful (my eyesight isn't great) and next thing I could be seeing my mug being shared all over the place I suppose!

Yanbu - I especially hate the type in which people are photographed or filmed minding their own business and shamed on the internet, just for laughs.

Look at this fat woman dancing along to her ipod. Isn't she funny? She's fat and she's got the cheek to enjoy something. Look at her.

I fucking hate that.

I saw a video of two women abusing an overweight man in a McDonalds queue and it resulted in a bystander pouring his drink over one of their heads.

I'm not sure I believe it was real though because the video camera started before the abuse started. Seems a bit weird to be coincidently filming just before this happened. Hmm

thanks everyone for this new crap going on fb, reason #1,287 why i won't join fb. though i can understand it does have good aspects and helps people keep in touch. but al ot of this face shaming is a form of bullying, i bet a lot of these 'photo takers wouldn't say anything in rl, so it sometimes shows how bloody petty this crap can be. send xxx round to break their legs ? is that even supposed to be funny Confused

I saw a picture of a woman in Louisiana going into an abortion clinic. I pointed out to my friend who shared it that the woman had done nothing illegal, and had a right to privacy, and that sharing the image was irresponsible.

I also hate those fake stats ones. Like: the government pays out £x to pensioners but £xxx to immigrants! Share if you think this isn't right!

I always do a really quick Google and they are almost always wrong. I then copy the link onto the comments so the person who shared it can see for themselves that it's not true.

I just hate Facebook being used to spread hate! Anybody doing it gets deleted from my friend list or their posts hidden if it would be socially unacceptable to delete them.

Agree Beingatwat, I have a friend's husband who is constantly doing that, along with links to sign various petitions which (I think) are really just posted to remind everyone how enlightened and intelligent he is.
My pet hate is company shaming. I have one particular friend who always starts her posts along the lines of ,'thank you tesco/asda/next for ruining ....
She once accused toys are us for ruining her children's Christmas because they had delivered toys in boxes with small pictures on the side. Err, don't order in half term???
The hysteria is always validated by her gun friends and the post always ends with someone telling her she is the best mum they know.
I don't look at Facebook much these days

this happened to my dh he was charged with assault and there was a court case it was resolved in court just prior to trial with the cps accepting that he had told the truth not the 'witness' but after it was reported in the paper there were all sorts of comments from idiots refusing to beleive it, and there were threats on social media threatening to come around to our house to sort him out , the police sorted it out pretty quickly but why do people think they can make these kind of comments and threats?

You dont know me
You cant see me
But that was what I thought yesterday
It's all in my head
It's just a game
You arent the boss of me

I hate it and suspect most of them are made up by people with an axe to grind against the person they're accusing.

In a way it's so bloody British! They haven't got the balls to confront the person at the time but are happy hiding behind the keyboard with their vitriol.

THat's so interesting Gnome. Another interesting read about this is You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson, which made me stop and think before ever joining in the braying mob.

There was a guy who was posting on my local Facebook pages recently looking for his teenage daughter.

Apparently her 'evil' mother had left him when the daughter was young and had refused to tell him or his family where they were.

Of course the huns got involved and within 24 hours the girl had been found along with a chorus of "Aw bless you hun, what a bitch your ex is".

I felt very uncomfortable about it, nobody knows why this woman left and kept his daughter away from him.
Yes, it's possible she is a vindictive cow or (and in my opinion, more likely) she left because she feared for her and her daughter's safety one way or another.

There are always two sides to things but Facebook appears to be the one place on earth where that doesn't apply.

I know there's a local facebook site to me that people post horrible things on. Photographs of registration plates they have deemed to have parked badly, insults about random people in the street they have secretly photographed etc. One particularly shitty one made the national news as it sparked so much controversy . Vile people. Glad I'm not on Facebook really.

Also the photographs of alleged killers and paedophiles being passed around, by people that really should know better as well. People just don't think

I hate it. It's cowardly too. I mean, family leaves a load of rubbish at the beach, and the course of action is to take photographs and upload to social media rather than ask them to take their shit with them?

Man pushes past pregnant woman for a seat, so the phone comes out and picture uploaded to Facebook rather than just asking if he'd rather mind if she sat there.

It's mind boggling.

Just to add, I struggle with the missing people ones to
I only share ones from the police, after reading an article like this
www.makeuseof.com/tag/missing-child-how-sharing-that-picture-can-put-lives-at-risk-weekly-facebook-tips/

" family’s secret identity was blown open after the father made a plea on Facebook. Well-meaning people worldwide shared the post until someone recognised the children.

What none of these well-meaning people realised was that the woman and children were given protected identities by police after leaving this man. Suddenly, their safety was put at risk, by people who had been trying to help reunite a family."

I also hate those fake stats ones. Like: the government pays out £x to pensioners but £xxx to immigrants! Share if you think this isn't right!"

you missed out the best bit - its normally the government pays out £x to pensioners but £xxx to ILLEGAL immigrants! ....... groan

WamBam, it's the same mentality of digging out the phone (and not to call 999) if people are fighting or if someone hurts them self. I honestly cannot believe some people. They think they are serving justice but actually, they look like the knob and are creating a dangerous situation. Anything for 15 minutes of fame from going viral. Appalling behaviour.

Shiroi, yes I did miss the illegal bit. Angry It's always the same people posting them as well.
