Yes, toenail! I have twin identical DDs. I am struggling. It's okay if they're dressed, as I do different colours, but when they are in just a nappy, etc. It's too hard! It isn't so bad, is it?

My cousin did this with her completely identical twins. To be honest I wish she still would, it's impossible to tell them apart!!!

Yanbu, so long as non toxic etc, must be hard enough having twins without worry of which one is which.

A lady at playgroup kept her twins hospital ID tags on for weeks for the same reason!

Nail varnish on a toe is absolutely fine to do. They are probably months away from chewing their feet and digesting the nail varnish and hopefully by that stage a distinguishing freckle or similar will have appeared.

I think the nail polish is fine.

Does it matter if you've mixed them up already? They're not old enough to know their names so I don't see what difference it makes.

This always fascinated me. There must be loads of twins who get mixed up and forever think they are the eldest when really they are number 2 or vice versa!

Lots of people with identical twins/triplets etc do this from what I can gather. How else can you tell? I bet it takes a while for even parents to figure it out, just subtle differences.

I taught identical twins last year - have done before but these two were the most identical I have ever come across. The subtle differences were really hard to notice without staring for a while. Many of the children who had been with them for three years could tell. I assume parents could!

But the boys themselves couldn't always identify themselves in photographs for example. And they answered for one another and everything.

Anything that helps you distinguish them for now has got to be a good thing.

I have a friend who is an identical twin. He says his mum assured him that whilst he is Seth now, she is sure he used to be Dan for a while. She couldn't tell them apart as babies, it didn't matter in the end. Whichever started answering to Dan as a toddler became Dan and the other Seth*.
