Not a proper birthday cake????

Blablabla1984 · 24/08/2016 14:07

It's my husband's birthday this weekend and we're planning a BBQ. For the bday cake I was planning on making a strawberry cheesecake. When I mentioned this to him his words were: "that's not a birthday cake. It has to be a sponge cake to be a birthday one. Cheesecake sounds lovely though!"

Why? What? How?......... I got super puzzled. Is this a rule??

He obviously loves cheesecakes, I mean he'd eat anything that's in front of him but I was a little bit surprised on the "sponge cake rule". Is there really such thing? Grin

you wouldn't have a slice of cheesecake with a cup of tea at 4pm.

I feel like a barbarian Blush

diddl · 24/08/2016 14:29

If it's cake to eat on your bday then it's bday cake.

Strawberry cheesecake sounds fab.

Cheesecake isn't cake though, is it?Grin

I wouldn't refuse it or be miffed though!

Letmesleepalready · 24/08/2016 14:29

Yes I would, borpborpborp well, I'd love to, but can't stand tea, and can't have dairy, but would have no problem eating cheesecake at any time if I could 😄

Ceic · 24/08/2016 14:30

Last year, I had a Neopolitan Cheesecake for my Birthday cake - it was fab and exactly what I wanted. A friend with the same birthday hada Lemon Cheesecake - exactky what she wanted!

What makes any plate of food a Proper Birthday Cake is the opinion or request of the Person Who's Birthday it is.

monkeywithacowface · 24/08/2016 14:30

I would rather see Noel Edmonds jump naked out of a cake than have chocolate cake for my birthday. I don't mind chocolate cake in the right setting but it doesn't qualify as birthday cake.

Blablabla1984 · 24/08/2016 14:30

cherryplumbanana my thoughts exactly!! Any dessert with a candle is a birthday cake. Why so many rules?

Your DH is right cheesecake is not a birthday cake

You have cake and champagne in the afternoon

Dinner & cheesecake in the evening

Birdsgottafly · 24/08/2016 14:32

""There IS a rule about bday cake? shock grin Please someone tell me what a birthday cake is!""

They date back to Roman times and in all cultures, contain flour/wheat. They were also baked.

In Korea, they have Seaweed Birthday soup.

GabsAlot · 24/08/2016 14:32

a cake of cheese?

anyway no i not a cake as such more like a gooey dessert

Eatthecake · 24/08/2016 14:33

Cheesecake is not a birthday cake, I like cheesecake but on my birthday I want a good old cake

Cake & a glass of some alcohol in the afternoon, cheesecake after dinner

TheCrowFromBelow · 24/08/2016 14:33

Mitzy that is so wrong I need brain bleach Grin
is a cheesecake actually a cake? I know it has a biscuit base, and is delicious, and is welcome it at a birthday celebration but is it really cake?
Fwiw "Birthday cake" round here is anything you can stick candles into.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 14:34

These days at weddings people often have wheels of cheese, or a giant pork pie instead of trad wedding cake. We have shaken off the shackles of Cake tyranny.

TormundGiantsbabe · 24/08/2016 14:34

My mum once stuck a birthday candle in a sausage roll because my sister doesn't like cake.

cherryplumbanana · 24/08/2016 14:35

Google is not helping me on that one, but I have to share that one:

In Korea, the traditional birthday dish is a seaweed soup

TwoLittleBlooms · 24/08/2016 14:36

He is right! It isn't a proper birthday cake , with or without candles!

lottiegarbanzo · 24/08/2016 14:36

Woah, this no chocolate cake thing, that's just the two of you being eccentric and knowing it, is it not?

Birthday cake can be any kind of cake - sponge, chocolate, carrot, coffee, whatever you like - with icing and candles.

Agree that cheesecake does not count as cake but, if that's what the birthday person wants (or a pile of cheese, or of profiteroles...) then that's ok, isn't it?

Butterpuff · 24/08/2016 14:37

But isn't birthday cake a decorate fruit cake?

cherryplumbanana · 24/08/2016 14:37

sorry, part xpost Birdsgottafly!

KurriKurri · 24/08/2016 14:39

It's fine - anything you stick a candle on and call a birthday cake is a birthday cake.

On Blue Peter they made cakes for Shep et all out of dog food FFS.

DeathAnTaxes · 24/08/2016 14:39

Cheese cake isn't even a cake...

pansycake · 24/08/2016 14:39

Monkeywithacowface I totally agree, chocolate cake is lovely, but it isn't birthday cake!!! Has to be traditional sponge for me or I feel hard done by!!!

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 14:41

Who knew there were all these No Chocolate Cake on Birthdays type people wandering among us. I bet they look relatively normal too.............

Notso · 24/08/2016 14:41

I haven't had a birthday cake for 25 years so I'd take a cheesecake happily.

CatNip2 · 24/08/2016 14:42

it's his birthday its a (cheese)cake so as far as I am concerned it's a birthday (cheese)cake!

Now the kids are not little a birthday cake in this house comes in many different variations, as long as it has at least one candle it's a birthday cake and that includes a Cornetto or a pile of profiteroles.

He is being unreasonable.

Yorkieheaven · 24/08/2016 14:42

Can we please stop with the naked Noel Edmonds!

Now naked Tom hardy and it's any fucking cake you like
