Not a proper birthday cake????

It's my husband's birthday this weekend and we're planning a BBQ. For the bday cake I was planning on making a strawberry cheesecake. When I mentioned this to him his words were: "that's not a birthday cake. It has to be a sponge cake to be a birthday one. Cheesecake sounds lovely though!"

Why? What? How?......... I got super puzzled. Is this a rule??

He obviously loves cheesecakes, I mean he'd eat anything that's in front of him but I was a little bit surprised on the "sponge cake rule". Is there really such thing? Grin

this doesn't even work, because purists have told us that chocolate cake is not birthday cake!

In some people's opinion chocolate cake is not birthday cake. That doesn't mean they're right.

candykane25 · 24/08/2016 16:01

Sponge, icing, buttercream and jam. And candles.
But any substitute is fine with me :)

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 16:02

a non-baked cheesecake?

Baked cheesecakes are the daddy of cheescakes but a non-baked cheesecake cake has a charm all of its own. Plus they're simplicity itself to fling together.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2016 16:02

DoJo non baked cheesecake is amazing. I much prefer it to the baked version.

monkeywithacowface · 24/08/2016 16:03

To me there isn't a more depressing sight than a hostess gleefully dimming the lights and walking out with an M&S chocolate celebration tray bake with a candle stuck in it. It just screams "Happy Birthday I couldn't give a shit"

SoftSheen · 24/08/2016 16:05

YABU. Birthday cakes must have icing.

In any case, a cheesecake is not really a cake, in the same way a pancake or an oatcake isn't really a cake.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 16:05

God forbid a hostess doesn't bake her own cakes!

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 16:07

Some people are a bit tiresome with all their rules. Pissed off if it's chocolate, really pissed of if it's chocolate and shop bought.

roseteapot101 · 24/08/2016 16:10

i'd be tempted to either make a dessert that looks like a sponge cake yet its not or a dessert that requires sponge cake as a ingredient

that way i could say theres cake in there and you asked for cake hahaha

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/08/2016 16:22

I've never made a baked cheesecake!!
Only the unbaked kind....I wouldn't know where to start with a baked one! Doesn't it all just melt?! Confused

cherryplumbanana · 24/08/2016 16:24

Ha. But what about a pancake cake!

Joke aside, as long as the birthday boy/ girl is happy, I think it's fine

Not a proper birthday cake????
PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2016 16:27

mybread it has eggs in it which set as they're baked.

freetrampolineforall · 24/08/2016 16:27

I hate cake and I hate cream. But, fear not, I love chocolate and crisps and many other examples of the major food group, including brownies (not too cakey) Just not cake. I would love it if someone offered me a cheesecake with candles. In fact, I'm going to suggest it next year. I never get a birthday cake that I like. Thank you, op, for the idea.

cherryplumbanana · 24/08/2016 16:29

I haven't tried, but that looks quite nice

I'm so fucking excited about bake off.

BaggyCheeks · 24/08/2016 16:36

cherry In my view, one isn't better than the other, but they're not the same thing. My DP loves a birthday carrot cake, which some people wouldn't see as a traditional birthday cake but he loves it, which is what's important.

I've never made a baked cheesecake, if only because you need about £10 worth of Philadelphia to make one. So freaking expensive. Unbaked is one tub of Philly and a can of condensed milk - far cheaper.

Blablabla1984 · 24/08/2016 16:37

BaggyCheekes does the condensed milk cheesecake set well? Do you have a good recipe? I usually put gelatine in my unbaked ones.

My birthday is in June. My favourite birthday cake growing up was always a Romantica - loved taking advantage of a summer birthday to have tasty ice cream! Cake is whatever you want it to be.

OhShitFuck · 24/08/2016 17:05

Cheesecake isn't a burthday cake but if he likes it, make one too

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/08/2016 17:22

Eggs in a cheesecake? Wow! Every day's a school day on mumsnet!! Shock

Sgtmajormummy · 24/08/2016 17:33

Alpaca Friend has a Cash & Carry card and got them for us. If the normal ones serve 4 (snort!) those were for 12, but I'm talking about 10 years ago....

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 17:41

Baked cheesecake is the original. Chilled cheesecake is a newcomer.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 17:42

Oh TriJo I used to love Romantica. Is it still about?

AlpacaPicnic · 24/08/2016 17:42

Actually lolling at 'normal ones serve 4'
Not at Casa Alpaca they don't...

tibbawyrots · 24/08/2016 18:37

Why do I fancy cheesecake right now? And do I have the strawberry one or the toffee one out of the freezer? 🤔
