Not a proper birthday cake????

It's my husband's birthday this weekend and we're planning a BBQ. For the bday cake I was planning on making a strawberry cheesecake. When I mentioned this to him his words were: "that's not a birthday cake. It has to be a sponge cake to be a birthday one. Cheesecake sounds lovely though!"

Why? What? How?......... I got super puzzled. Is this a rule??

He obviously loves cheesecakes, I mean he'd eat anything that's in front of him but I was a little bit surprised on the "sponge cake rule". Is there really such thing? Grin

OP this one involves heavy whipping cream and sugar rather than condensed milk, but if you search No Bake Cheesecake there'll be loads Smile Definitely not the same beast as a baked cheesecake, but has it's own charm.

Tibbawyrots the strawberry!

I have no cake in for Bake Off and I'm disproportionately sad about it...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/08/2016 20:55

Who said chocolate cake is not birthday cake?

My dh would strongly disagree. His ideal birthday cake - same as MiL used to make when he was a kid - is chocolate sponge, with chocolate buttercream in the middle, on the top, AND all down the sides.

FeelingSmurfy · 24/08/2016 21:49

I'm not a fan of baked cheesecake, I only like the unbaked ones

I have never added gelatine (or veggie equivalent) to my cheesecakes, they set lovely

Osquito · 25/08/2016 17:09

For several years my requested childhood "birthday cake" was apple pie, with candles on top. Then there was the raspberry pavlova phase, also referred to as "my birthday cake". Such were the ways of my barbaric family!

I'm (secretly) disappointed when DP buys me those sponge-and-jam-and-fondant affairs, they're okay but not my favourite. I think it's whatever makes the birthday person feel like it's their special birthday, and definitely whatever they'd enjoy the most! Birthday candles/sparklers are non-negotiable, however.

Martha91 · 25/08/2016 17:18

100% NOT birthday cake! It is what it is, and that ISN'T borthday cake. My opinion, obviously!

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 25/08/2016 17:20

Is it edible and can you stick a candle in it?

Well then it's birthday cake in my book.

PurpleDaisies · 25/08/2016 17:21

What about corned beef hash with a birthday candle in it bunty?

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 25/08/2016 17:22

Yep. If that's what the receiver has requested, that qualifies as birthday cake!

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 25/08/2016 17:22

Birthday cake is a state of mind baby.

He's right, it isn't a birthday cake, not even if you stick candles on it.
Personally I wouldn't be happy with it as a birthday dessert either but that's just me-cheesecake just isn't my thing.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 25/08/2016 17:32

There's something shifty about people who don't like cheesecake.

BluePancakes · 25/08/2016 18:10

I tend to make Cheat's Cheesecake: Mascapone cheese, icing sugar and raspberries mixed so the raspberries start to break and have a ripple effect going on. Served with a stack of digestive biscuits. Put the bowl and a spoon in the middle, and everyone help themselves. Delicious.

But no, it's not a cake.
Chocolate sponge, otoh, does qualify as a birthday cake if it's got chocolate ganache or buttercream on the outside. The thought of chocolate sponge with fondant icing on - yuck!

One year, we made DH a giant cookie for his birthday, and stuck candles in the top. It was what he wanted, but still not a cake.

chicknquack · 25/08/2016 18:18

Pretty sure adults generally aren't entitled to birthday cakes (although it is lovely if you get one).

My kids aren't massive cake fans... they'll happily eat it if I make one but prefer other things. We've had birthday lemon meringue pies (more than once), birthday pavlovas etc. We also do "icebox cake" where you layer ginger biscuits with whipped cream (I add lemon zest to mine) and put it in the fridge overnight and then you can slice it like a cake. Super easy and everyone loves it.

Is this a joke?!

MapleandPear · 25/08/2016 18:21

Any cake is a birthday cake if it is made or bought for a birthday.

SenecaFalls · 25/08/2016 18:28

My best friend always has sweet potato pie as her birthday cake.

NaturalRBF · 25/08/2016 18:34

Tell him he's a cockwomble! You're a bloody
Fab wife for making cheesecake Grin

If he wants the sponge cake could you send the cheesecake my way Wink

Tryingtobegood10 · 25/08/2016 19:12

Wow I'm so suprised at this! If it's got candles then it's a birthday cake!!! I don't really like cheese cake but would definitely class it a bday cake if someone brought it to me singing lol and I would eat a slice and love it!!! I'v had that caterpillar kids cake for my birthday last couple of years:) I live his silly face

Ghodavies · 25/08/2016 23:00

I agree cherry

GinandTits · 26/08/2016 09:25

Not a birthday cake sorry op! Bet he will be pleased either way though.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 26/08/2016 13:23

I always have a birthday pavlova Grin

Otherwise the standard birthday cake around these parts is a chocolate mud cake. I can't remember the last time anyone served a birthday sponge cake!

I'm in Australia though so that might be why Smile

ShtoppenDerFloppen · 26/08/2016 14:27

In response to the OP, in our house, the celebrant chooses the cake. DNiece had a banana cream pie, DS wanted a lemon drizzle, I got SFA (same thing I get every year), DH will be double chocolate and DD will probably want whipped cheesecake.

Perhaps we didn't get the memo that it has to be a sponge Grin

JeanGenie23 · 26/08/2016 14:29

My dream birthday cake would be tiramisu sponge cake is a bit dull

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 26/08/2016 14:38

I know someone who always asks for flapjack for his birthday. He gets a large slab of it with candles stuck in the top.
