I used to abbreviate Christian to Xian or Xn in my lecture notes. Tend not to use it elsewhere.

If your DDs are old enough to work, can't they cycle? I used to cycle 5.5 miles to one of my holiday jobs, took half an hour. We had no public transport, either.

I've never understood arrangements where your teen has a job but you effectively have a job as the chauffeur getting them to their job. If she wants to keep that job, she ought to work out a way of getting there tilt doesn't require you being at her beck and call all day. How do other people manage? She'll have to set up a lift share and pay towards petrol, or get a bike as a pp said. Very poor to make it all your responsibility. Similar problem for the other one too.

Didn't Christina Aguilera go through a phase of calling herself 'Xtina' ? is it because people thought she was too Christ-like? Grin

You sound very bitter ScaredyCat3000.

tinydon · 23/08/2016 09:29

No. It is disruptive and rude.

Sara107 · 23/08/2016 12:20

Doubt anyone would be very offended by a teenager slipping late. But a bit pointless as she will miss more than half the service. Unless she's like my dD for whom the biscuits at the end are the main reason for going!

fastdaytears · 23/08/2016 12:32

As it happened the teenager turned up late and fell asleep...

At the church I attend a full Mass takes around an hour. So by aiming to turn up half an hour late (assuming your journey runs to time) you will miss about half of it. Some services I have been to, with no hymns, a short sermon etc it can be as short as 35 minutes. So you will effectively miss it.

If it's worth going to this event at all, surely it's worth being punctual? If it is so unimportant that to miss half or more of it is ok, it's not worth attending at all?

It does seem rude to me - to the organisers and the other group participants.

myownprivateidaho · 23/08/2016 13:13

I'd be amazed if any church would be bothered by this. How on earth would it be disrupting to open the door and slip in the back? I have a feeling that people posting here are not church-goers.

As for Xtian, Augustus Carp Esq. is always referring to himself as an "Xtian Gentleman" and that was published in 1924. So not a new idea.
Very funny book.

Nomina sacra (sacred names) are always abbreviated in early Christian and medieval manuscripts. This wikipedia article gives the standard Greek abbreviations en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomina_sacra; for Latin, these are the ones I can remember off the top of my head:

Ds (God)
Dns (Lord)
scs (saint, holy)
sps (Spirit)
Pr (Father)
apls (apostle)
Xs (Christ)
Xianus (Christian)

MrsMac2014 · 23/08/2016 17:27

A bit pointless really and really embarrassing for her to walk in half an hour late. Looks unprofessional too. What if there are no seats left at the back? Could someone else help you out with lifts or your other daughter goes to work early. Explain to the organisors your problem and maybe they could suggest something.

PurpleDaisies · 23/08/2016 17:28

Did you miss this already happened mrsmac? Smile

Scaredycat3000 · 24/08/2016 13:04

Pepper You sound very bitter ScaredyCat3000. No I really don't. Really don't get where that's coming from, must say more about you. Fed up of religious privilege, totally.
Why is a secular community activity promoting inclusion, excluding people by including taking part in a religious service?
