i have to take both dds at the same time in different directions.
one is a church service, to do with the NCS she has just done.

church service will surely be all accepting?

Yes.

It may be to save parchment, but it's also conventional. It's why, if you look at some old paintings and images, you will see 'inri' written over the crucifix. It's an abbreviation for Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, but the abbreviation isn't seen as disrespectful either. Jesus often also written as ihs.

Anyway.

I think it is rude if you're turning up late because you can't be arsed to check beforehand with the vicar. I agree that 'God won't mind' is a rather fatuous way of looking at it. God may not, but that's no reason to put human being out.

But then, slipping in the back of a busy church will be very different from turning up to something deathly silent and striding to the front doing jazz hands, and I'm sure there's a sensible middle ground.

GingerbreadGingerbread · 21/08/2016 14:38

I find it disruptive and rude when people do this and I thought I saw the vicar twitching last time as is impossible to slip in completely quietly! If you're going to be that law (a usual service is only about an hour) don't bother going- you've missed it. In my opinion it's disrespectful.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/08/2016 14:41

Yes. Although I've never seen the abbreviation used to represent the Christ part of Christian. It's more commonly used in Xmas.

Anonforonce · 21/08/2016 14:50

When I did my theology degree I used 'xian' all the time as a quick abbreviation for 'Christian', especially when taking notes in lectures etc. It's not secular or offensive to Christians, I am one!

As has already been said, it comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is spelled X and is the first letter of Christ. It's been used for centuries by scholars as an abbreviation.

OnceThereWasThisGirlWho · 21/08/2016 14:57

Jesus often also written as ihs.

I thought that stood for "In His Service"? Maybe that's a backronym.

NoahVale · 21/08/2016 14:59

thank you,
not read all the thread.
just got back.
she ended up about an hour late, we got lost
both work place and church were in opposite directions.
neither dd was ready any earlier
ncs dd was upset at the lateness but as i pointed out, neither were ready, it was immaterial.
Then she wanted picking up, which hadn't been part of the deal.
got lost again.
then working dd took more of my wrath when she finished work early and needed a lift.
and yes, they do need lifts, there is no public transport particularly on a sunday to these destinations.
church going dd said the service sent her to sleep

anyway thanks for those who backed me up, and those who thought it rude, well, you are entitled to your opinion.
she did text the NCS organisers to let them know of her lateness.

IHS is the first three letters of Jesus in Greek (roughly transliterated it's IHSOUS)

Anonforonce · 21/08/2016 15:02

H is a long E sound in Ancient Greek, if that makes it clearer?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2016 15:06

Ooh, 'backronym', I love that. Never heard it.

No, it's just simple English - in older versions, you spell Jesus Ihesus, is all.

Don't worry, I am neither offended or confused. Just pointing out that xtian is an illogical abbreviation. I wasn't under the misapprehension that you made it up scardy so I'm not saying it's your fault or anything :D

Daisies123 · 22/08/2016 19:04

LOL arrive an hour late at my church and you'd get there just in time for the post-service coffee! I don't think it was rude, people know these things happen - I'm often 10/15 mins late at the moment as I have a baby and it can sometimes take longer to get out the house than I thought! ;-)
The important thing is not to crash around and disturb other people's worship. I also think it would be harder to follow the service (especially if you're not an habitual churchgoer) if you've missed a chunk of it.

Member251061 · 22/08/2016 19:30

It should be fine. You get all walks of life at church, some won't mind and some will. God loves you either way!

Pinkcadillac · 22/08/2016 19:31

Wasn't the service over when she arrived if she was one hour late? or she just caught the last 10 mins?. hardly worth the trouble specially if she fell asleep!

NoahVale · 22/08/2016 19:49

I think they had something going on before the service, which she obviously missed. i dont have the finer details Grin

People usually turn up late whenever I go to church. I always thought it was normal.

Catholic church near us is very multi-cultural and alot of people just wander in and out, which is apparently standard is some countries. Some people don't ever make it into the church proper but hang about in the porch bit by choice.

Iflyaway · 22/08/2016 19:55

Why make excuses?

Turning up anywhere late is rude.

TTH.

Iflyaway · 22/08/2016 19:56

Oops. HTH.

MLGs · 22/08/2016 19:57

I'm not particularly religious, so not offended in any way, but xian or xtian must be the most pointless and plain daft abbreviation going.

Why does the name of a religion need abbreviating?

TequilaBlockingBird · 22/08/2016 19:57

Rude.
God doesn't exist whether it minds is beside the point.

Craigie · 22/08/2016 21:57

Really, really rude to disrupt a church service by turning up so late.

cheval · 22/08/2016 22:15

My father used to pop into Church on a Sunday morning on his way to golf. Stayed 10 minutes. Then off with my bro as caddy. That's probably ruder. But he felt he had done his bit.

honeylulu · 22/08/2016 22:36

At our church the full Sunday morning service is long. About an hour and a half. They ring the bells again just before communion - about 50/60 mins in and its openly stated in the church noticeboard that this is done to let parishioners who've not been able to attend the whole service that communion is about to start and there is a sudden ingress of people just coming in for that, often with small children etc

My son serves at the altar some weeks and those Sundays I am usually just arriving back from circuit training when the mass bell rings and I pop in. I probably wouldn't go at all otherwise. (It is a big church and quite easy to slip in quietly.)

dansmum · 22/08/2016 23:10

If it's a one off and you are regular attenders..you can say 'next week we'll be late as I've got to be in 2 places at once...but I'll be here. And thats ok. If you are not regular attenders and just turn up late each week, yeah that is rude.

Either drop worker off early and be on time...or drop worker off and attend an evening service or midweek one.or if not regular attenders to one church..find one closer to dd's work that has a later service.

HeyOverHere · 23/08/2016 00:39

One time shouldn't matter. God will also forgive you if you miss church once in a while.
