Unreasonable curry disgrace

Gothgirl78 · 19/08/2016 22:36

Blinking flip. I'm visiting my parents. They live in a town in the north of England. Takeaway curry required as its Friday.

AIBU to think that the vegetarian curry shouldn't contain Brussel sprouts. And it was bland. Yuk.

Any other disgusting curry ingredients?

Vegetarian curry is a disgrace.

Some foods just don't work well as veggie alternatives.

Eh? Saag aloo, paneer jalfrezi, mutter paneer, tarka dahl, chana massalam, etc etc, are not alternatives to curry. Curry is not a meat dish. Lots of people in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are vegetarian. What on earth are you talking about Joffrey? What kind of curry do you eat?

Your bland brussels sprout curry sounds crap OP. A mixed vegetable curry should have mushrooms, cauliflower, peppers, carrots, brussels sprouts too even, as long as it's nicely cooked and spicy.

Curry is about the cooking method and the spices, not necessarily the type of meat/veg/cheese/fish that has been curried.

I love curry. Tonight DH made mushroom and spinach palak, tarka dahl, mutter paneer, spicy battered salmon and paneer jalfrezi. He makes an amazing very spicy smoked aubergine one too, onion bhajis, vegetable pakora, salmon tikka and a mixed veg makhanwala with cashew nuts.

Sorry gothgirl but that's what you get for visiting Mackemland. Now, if you'd only bought a decent curry, from a decent city a few miles north...

MrsHathaway · 19/08/2016 23:12

I've never been to a vegetarian curry house. The vegetarian offerings at meat curry houses tend to be a bit ... sad. Side dishes and starters, great, but main courses, yuk.

Frozen vegetables doused in sauce can't appeal to anyone with taste buds, surely?

Gothgirl78 · 19/08/2016 23:12

Vegetarian Indian food can be blinking amazing. I'm no snob ( I'm from Sunderland after all) but tonight's offering was a disgrace.

In future I'll travel for vegetarian curry delight.

I'm on awe of any notion whatsoever of feeding Brussels Sprouts to a Mackem! That's one ambitious takeaway!

BreconBeBuggered · 19/08/2016 23:14

The blandness is even less forgivable than the crappy veg imo.

gingerboy1912 · 19/08/2016 23:14

Sprouts in August? in a curry? Shock

ThymeLord · 19/08/2016 23:15

You need to name the town OP. If there were sprouts in a curry here people would riot in the streets

FoxesOnSocks · 19/08/2016 23:16

I had vegetable curry last night. It was gorgeous

Grin

Though serious that sounds terrible. I would strongly suggest never entering the north east again, just to be safe.

I'm sniggering at the "Vegetarian curry is a disgrace. Some foods just don't work well as veggie alternatives" comment. Indian food is probably the most varied not the alternative vegetarian diet.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 19/08/2016 23:19

PMSL at vegetarian curry being wrong. India is full of vegetarian restaurants. It's the best place in the world to visit if you're a vegetarian!

Gothgirl78 · 19/08/2016 23:19

Thyme. My husbands cure did have sprouts in it. There aren't many veggie rioting types in Sunderland.

LifeInJeneral · 19/08/2016 23:19

This is awkward...I am a huge fan of sprouts....and sometimes when I do homemade curry....I cut sprouts in half...and I add them to the curry
I would never serve it to anyone else though, I am fully aware that I love disgusting food (I went through a stage of eating tuna, gherkin, sauerkraut and red cabbage sandwiches for a while, but even I know that is disgusting now).
The sprouts in homemade curry is nice though, they soak up all the spices and sauce and turn into little flavour bombs. I fully accept that I am in the minority here though, I will sit in the corner being strange by myself.

imsorryihaventaclue · 19/08/2016 23:21

My local Chinese restaurant puts cucumber in the vegetable curry. Doesn't work.

Unhappyhousehunting · 19/08/2016 23:22

Are you in the Tyne Valley? I'm wondering if I know the curry house!

Gothgirl78 · 19/08/2016 23:25

Thanks for the replies. I'm pleased I'm not unreasonable!

Wine a bed . Hopefully without sprout curry tummy x

I've occasionally found a sprout in a veg curry. It's become a bit of a family joke that there must always be one hiding in there somewhere. It's a bit of a shame that often in the UK they use all the very cheapest vegetables - it all feels like an afterthought.

The vegetarian food I ate in India was incredible.

MostlyHet · 19/08/2016 23:26

My local curry house back when I lived in Leeds always put sprouts in the veg korma. I quite liked them (best way to eat sprouts IMO!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/08/2016 23:27

I once had a lasagne (vegetarian) that had sweetcorn, beans and lentils in the layers...........like they'd made a vegetable stew/hotpot and thought "Fuck, it, this'll do for those pesky lentil weavers"

this was in the 90s in Cornwall. Most places we ate were "Oh, we can do you fish" Hmm

ThymeLord · 19/08/2016 23:28

Ohhhhh Sunderland is reet up north. We riot for sprouts in Preston.

FoxesOnSocks · 19/08/2016 23:29

Everyone!! Back away slowly from LifeInJeneral, I think she's dangerous.

MsVestibule · 19/08/2016 23:30

lifeinjeneral. I love sprouts, too. In anything. Maybe we need to start a Sprout Support Group.

TwoLittleBlooms · 19/08/2016 23:30

I love sprouts...but in a curry?? Noooo!

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 19/08/2016 23:31

Blinking flip

Thank you OP! I shall be saying that regularly from now on Grin

And YANBU. Spirits in a curry is a fucking disgrace.

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 19/08/2016 23:34

SPROUTS! Bloody autocorrect Blush

Gothgirl78 · 19/08/2016 23:35

I love all veg. But unexpected frozen Brussels sprouts in a hot curry from a take away in Sunderland is just not on.
