Booked holiday apt but visitors can't use the pool

Booked apt with pool
Paid in full

Now I receive extra details from the owner and only the people staying at the apt can use the pool.
I booked it so my brother and his family can visit and use the pool.
Is the owner being unreasonable or am I ?

A lot of these complexes in my experience tend to have a couple of people who live there all year and they act like they own the whole place themselves.

A few years ago when we got to our apartment in Portugal I jumped straight into the pool and one of the year round residents who was German threw an absolute tantrum at me because I hadn't used the shower before I went in the pool.

There was a shower there but no signs saying that you had to use it before entering the pool and nothing about it on my booking form.

So I was slightly miffed that I had upset this guy on the first day and I mentioned it to a lady in the café which was next door to the complex and she told me that he tried to put all of the holidaymakers off of using the pool as quickly as he could after they arrived.

The reason that she gave me is that he was under the (mistaken) impression that as he lived there all year round the pool was mainly for his own private use and holidaymakers were taking a liberty using it.

Sorry, I too think YABU.
Inviting guests for the day into the apartment or any private apartment garden or terrace is one thing, it doesn't affect other guests. But if I was staying in an apartment with shared facilities and all the other residents brought in guests to use the pool I might be a bit Hmm.

Fair enough to e mail and see if you can let your niece and guests up to the capacity of your apartment come and use the pool if they visit you.

I would guess the issue has caused problems in the past and that the non-rental owners of other apartments get pissed off with it.

AmandaIsHere · 18/08/2016 14:19

But it's different for owners. They own the property and pool that comes with it.

MummaGiles · 18/08/2016 14:22

It could well be a covenant of her own head lease that only residents can use the pool, which if broken could leave her in breach of her lease and in all sorts of problems.

DameXanaduBramble · 18/08/2016 14:24

I dunno, I just think it's a bit of a cheek to expect your bro to have a free pool when he's presumably got a free apartment too. And of course he's bothered about a pool, unless he can't swim or something.

dollylucy · 18/08/2016 14:26

Dame - my brother doesn't know anything about the pool

OP posts:
ZaZathecat · 18/08/2016 14:28

And I agree with Persian re full time residents thinking they can dictate rules to holiday makers.

user1471422849 · 18/08/2016 14:29

What are you hoping for here? Do you intend to try to cancel your booking, or are you just irritated?

KoalaDownUnder · 18/08/2016 14:30

God, AIBU is tiresome sometimes. I swear people lie in wait for an opportunity to use the words 'cheeky' and/or 'entitled'.

I used to own and live in an apartment with a shared pool. Any resident could invite guests to the pool. If I rented my apartment out, short- or long-term, that right transferred to the person renting.

Obviously, common sense would apply and you'd get some blowback if you invited 20 people round every day for a rowdy pool party. But if you had a few people over for a swim now and again, nobody would give a toss.

It worked out fine.

So no, OP, I don't think you are being ridiculously and astonishingly unreasonable.

DameXanaduBramble · 18/08/2016 14:30

Yes, I understand that. But you're expecting him to be able to use the pool.

I think you'll just have to rule it out, it's up to the owner, after all.

DameXanaduBramble · 18/08/2016 14:32

That's fine, koala, I do think it's cheeky & you don't. Unfortunately you don't own op's apartments so it's a mute point isn't it.

DameXanaduBramble · 18/08/2016 14:32

Sorry, I meant moot

AmandaIsHere · 18/08/2016 14:34

So no, OP, I don't think you are being ridiculously and astonishingly unreasonable

She's not be ridiculously unreasonable but she's also not listening. The fact is it is not allowed for a number of reasons but she won't actually listen to why it's not okay.

budgiegirl · 18/08/2016 14:38

I used to own and live in an apartment with a shared pool. Any resident could invite guests to the pool. If I rented my apartment out, short- or long-term, that right transferred to the person renting.

That's fine if your community allows that. But it's quite common for communities not to allow visitors to invite other guests to the pool. Some owners even stipulate that you cannot have other guests to your apartment.

While I think it would have been helpful for the owner to have pointed this out upfront, really I do think the OP should have checked with the owner before booking that extra guests would be allowed to use the facilities, and not just assumed it would be ok. You wouldn't dream of assuming it was ok if you were booking a hotel.

dollylucy · 18/08/2016 14:39

Amandals- im responding to points. I'm not "not listening"

OP posts:
KoalaDownUnder · 18/08/2016 14:41

No, it's not actually a moot point at all.

Most posters are acting as if it's the most outrageous pisstake for the OP to have even considered that she might be allowed to have guests in the pool.

It's not, at all. Plenty of places allow it.

AmandaIsHere · 18/08/2016 14:41

Okay then but you haven't said anything about insurance and other guests.

Instead you are saying stuff like well I wouldn't mind it.

dollylucy · 18/08/2016 14:43

Amandals - My 3rd post
Ok, I Could understand insurance

OP posts:
exWifebeginsat40 · 18/08/2016 14:51

so..your brother is staying in your family apartment near the beach, presumably free/cheaply. you then book 2 people into a 4-bed apt which has a pool. your brother will come over to use the facilities for free.

i dunno, it sounds a bit...fraudulent to me. beach, pool, family apartment and rental apartment, all for the price of 2 people (or 1 adult 1 child).

is that about the size of it? because it's a pisstake if so.

welliesandwine · 18/08/2016 14:52

I would say the apt sleeps four therefore that's four people able to use the pool ...presume you paid full whack for the apt even though there's only the two of you in it ..so as long as there's only four in the pool at one time then its not an issue.
Maybe worth asking stating you'd only allow four people max in the pool and in all likelihood it'll just be two kids ?

dollylucy · 18/08/2016 14:52

And this- I completely understand about rules being there for insurance reasons and to stop overcrowding, thank you to those who pointed that out

OP posts:
dollylucy · 18/08/2016 14:55

Well no Exwife- our family apt had to be paid for, you know, bought, so hardly free
Fraudulent?

OP posts:
KoalaDownUnder · 18/08/2016 14:55

Wtf is 'fraudulent' or 'a pisstake' about that?? Are you serious?

The OP is renting an apartment, for herself and her child, at the agreed rate. What on earth has the apartment she owns, and the beach, got to do with anything?

DameXanaduBramble · 18/08/2016 14:55

Well, Koala, unless you're the owner who has the final say then it is indeed, in this instance, a moot point.

exWifebeginsat40 · 18/08/2016 14:56

so is your brother paying to stay there?
