Wibu to have scratched this car?

Taking dtwins out in our double stroller, cars parked right on the pavement , can't walk on the road, too much traffic. Was I unreasonable to force my pram though, scratching one of the bigger cars in the process?

OP posts:

Surely it is illegal to park on the pavement?

There are 2 cars that persistently do this on the road by ds's school, meaning I have to push ds (in a sn buggy) into the road.

Even if you are dropping off or picking up someone disabled (as a pp suggested) it is still causing an obstruction.

Scratching a car deliberately is arsehole behaviour, but if you park on the pavement causing an obstruction then you do risk someone accidentally damaging your car.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/08/2016 08:21

I value the lives of every person on this planet even the less desirable ones above my car. My car is one of my most prized possessions and if it got scratched I would probably cry (I never park it on the pavement though) but I would rather it got scratched then someone got run over. I just don't condone the OP posting in a bragging way about scratching the person's car.

humblesims · 18/08/2016 08:33

This used to make my blood boil and still does really. It is soooo inconsiderate (and illegal I think) but sadly two wrongs dont make a right. If you accidently scratched their car trying to get past then I would say YANBU but on purpose YABU.

Gottagetmoving · 18/08/2016 08:35

Why? Because I'm not some kind of namby pamby socialist twat

Its obvious you are not a socialist - You sound like an extreme right wing fascist pig.
Valuing your car over a human life. You are beyond belief.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/08/2016 08:38

Or maybe Toga is trying to get us to react and we all just have.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 18/08/2016 08:39

Toga - it's ironic really that the sort of person who values their car above the safety of 'strangers' is more likely to get their car scratched because they have parked without consideration for others

Those of us that don't value their car above any living human tend not to park blocking the pavement and are therefore less likely to get our car scratched by a pram or wheelchair!

Togaparties · 18/08/2016 08:43

shagged I park as considerably as possible, not because of concern for others but concern for keeping the car safe.

Togaparties · 18/08/2016 08:44

Considerately even!

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 18/08/2016 08:49

Toga - so you'd happily park in a way that forced people with prams & wheelchairs to have to navigate busy moving traffic - as long as it reduced the risk of your car being damaged? (but the reality is that it wouldn't reduce the risk as the OP has demonstrated!)

Nice Hmm

Togaparties · 18/08/2016 08:52

Well no, the last thing I want is pedestrians being forced to brush past it!

ConformationFart · 18/08/2016 08:57

Of all the weird and bizarre posts over the years this one has made me realise I must live in a parallel universe with me being allowed a glimpse of it via MN.

It just highlights the massive sense of entitlement society in general has. The drivers who feel entitled to park wherever suits THEM best and the car damagers who feel entitled to damage the cars.

What would happen if it was a police car parked on the pavement? Would you scratch that?

MerchantofVenice · 18/08/2016 08:57

I think we all know who the troll is now...

Newes · 18/08/2016 08:59

If there are cars parked on the other side of the road you are causing an obstruction, so find somewhere else to park. Or run the risk of a pedestrian you have blocked accidentally scratching your car. I am sure as shit not going to shimmy past gauging if there's room for the pram/wheelchair/me.

TheGruffaloMother · 18/08/2016 09:44

Togaparties

Sultan Put it this way, if there was a fire and I had the choice between saving my car or the life of a stranger the car would win every single time.

Have you had a psychiatric assessment recently? You are aware that your car isn't a small child, yes? Letting someone die because you'd rather not go through the hassle of replacing your car is seriously twisted.

Lunar1 · 18/08/2016 10:03

If a police car was parked on the pavement and the only way to safely pass was to rub the wheelchair along the car then yes, it would potentially get scratched. I wouldn't have pushed dh out into traffic just because it was a police car. They don't tend to block the right of way though do they!

DoveBlue · 18/08/2016 10:06

It is not illegal to park on the pavement but it is illegal to drive on the pavement so unless the car was dropped there the driver had done something illegal and is obviously planning to do illegal again to move the car.

I find this very annoying I also have twins often in a double buggy (my buggy 63cm so not super wide) and I get stuck or have to cross the road. Really get frustrated possibly also due to lack of sleep. But I have never deliberately scratched a vehicle (I have shouted at a few van drivers and might have photographed and sent to their company/posted on social media Blush). Deliberately damaging their vehicle is also illegal. You have just a fallen down to their level!

hazeyjane · 18/08/2016 10:08

Otherwise, parking a vehicle on the pavement could lead to an offence of obstruction being committed. This could result in a fixed penalty notice being issued to offending vehicles. It can also cause danger/nuisance for pedestrians and wheelchairs users.
This what the Police website says.

ConformationFart · 18/08/2016 10:18

Surely the most obvious thing to do is turn around and find a safe place to crossConfused.

TheSultanofPingu · 18/08/2016 10:31

Oh if only it was that simple Conformation
I'm repeating myself here, but the road may be extremely busy, with no crossing to be seen. Some roads may only have a pavement on one side.
Why should it always have to be the pedestrian putting themselves in danger.

DoloresVanCartier · 18/08/2016 10:37

Why wouldn't the op have been able to cross the road safely? Why wasn't it safe for her to go around the car? Was she on a dual carriageway? If not I suspect my actions would have been to wait for a safe time to cross or pass. That's the same thing I would do if I had to cross a road. I think the op just had the rage about the twat who had parked like a knobber.
I wouldn't have forced a buggy through, I would have waited to cross safely. I don't think crossing the road safely or waiting for no traffic is putting people's lives at risk, we cross roads every day. This time the op didn't want to cross so forced the buggy through the gap, she shouldn't have had to do this because the pavement should have been clear, but we all know there are knobs in the world.

LivingOnTheDancefloor · 18/08/2016 10:38

If you accidently scratched their car trying to get past then I would say YANBU but on purpose YABU.
This

Crossing a busy road is not always easy, cars don't slow down even for a mum with buggy, and safe crossings can be very far away.
The road is for vehicles, the pavement is for walking.

polarpercy · 18/08/2016 10:40

Ignoring the scratching of the vehicle for now, because I think people have hooked on to that and ignored everything else, how do you get into the road when cars are bumper to bumper?

Where I live there are roads where if someone parks on the pavement I used to have to reverse the whole length of the street (taking 5/10 minutes sometimes) to get somewhere to get into the road. I can sometimes squeeze through on my own when they are bumper to bumper but no way with the buggy. Why should pedestrians have to do this? Oh and drop down kerbs, often parked over here so again taking away the place to cross.

As a pedestrian I've been hit by a car whilst I was walking along the pavement, hit whilst stood on a pavement, sworn at and called a fat cunt, ugly cunt and fucking cunt whilst walking on a pavement by various cars because I was obviously in their way. All of these last ones happened whilst I was walking with my toddler. I've also had cars beep at me to move so they can drive along the pavement to park!

polarpercy · 18/08/2016 10:41

Absolutely agree Living the most recent beeping was when I was knelt down doing up my daughter's show. The woman wound down her window and told me to move so she could park on the pavement.

polarpercy · 18/08/2016 10:41

Argh shoe not show

LagunaBubbles · 18/08/2016 10:43

Why? Because I'm not some kind of namby pamby socialist twat?

No because there is no way you can be a psychologically health human being if you value a car over a fellow humans life, regardless of your political values which are of no interest or relevance here.
