Taking dtwins out in our double stroller, cars parked right on the pavement , can't walk on the road, too much traffic. Was I unreasonable to force my pram though, scratching one of the bigger cars in the process?

OP posts:

Mamma TJ But what difference do all these other imaginary difficulties that the driver faxes make? The driver has created an actual, specific, foreseeable difficulty for pedestrians.

Whatever difficulties the driver is facing, a tiny scratch is still a tiny scratch. You could say that if a little imperfection on a paint job causes them major distress, they probably don't face many difficulties.

One evening, bonfire night, a couple of years ago, a line of 10-15 cars were scratched at the same time in my village.

There was uproar in the local papers/FB, a few daily mail sad face photos and complaints about "£1000s of pounds worth of damage". Some very nice cars as well - Audi's, LR Evoque's, BMWs.

All were parked half on the pavement, in the pitch black, on a fast road, with holly hedges and a tiny pavement.

The scratches could have been made by parents and children trying to walk home after the bonfire. Or pushchairs. Or wheelchairs. Or handbags with metal corners. Or carelessly held keys. Or a number of other possibilities put forward by the commenters on the FB page.

The following year most people parked in the grounds of the castle and walked an extra 200 yds to the bonfire - Funny that.

Merchant, I'm not arguing, honestly I don't care enough about this thread to get into an argument, but the OP clearly states she forced her pram through.... That's deliberate

Gottagetmoving · 17/08/2016 20:42

Someone does something that is annoying and possibly (depending on local byelaws) illegal. Is OP being unreasonable to steal £500 pounds from them and burn it, as a punishment? If that sounds unreasonable, and seems to be vigilante justice which civilised people should avoid because the rule of law is better - then yes OP YWBU

WTF has that got to do with this situation?
OP was not handing out a pinishment. She was trying to negotiate a blocked pavement. Blocked by a selfish twat who doesn't give a crap about people having to walk on the road to pass their prized possession .
She didn't steal money or burn money.
She was walking on the bloody pavement where she should be.

The world has gone mad when people value cars above the safety of people.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 17/08/2016 20:49

Forcing her pram through the gap was deliberate, causing damage was not.

DoloresVanCartier · 17/08/2016 20:56

Very bitchy, if I do something, knowing that it's likely to cause damage, then that is deliberate. It wasn't accidental, that's my opinion, and that's the one I would take if I was approached as an officer by the car owner. If the OP had said, I struggled to get by the car and the buggy scratched it, possibly a different view, but she forced the buggy by the car.
I honestly couldn't really care less one way or another, and wonders why I insist on winding myself up by continuing to read and post but the OP actually shows a little bit of intent by the way she worded her post.

I all for moaning about twatish parking but I just really wanted to make that point. Driver was a twat and OP was U Grin

NeedAnotherGlass · 17/08/2016 20:56

You know, some places are hard to park reasonably. You have no clue what difficulties the person already has.
Please explain what difficulties a person might have that would require them to park on the pavement?
If some places are hard to park reasonably, then parking elsewhere is the answer, not parking unreasonably.

MerchantofVenice · 17/08/2016 20:57

Yes - exactly. She was deliberately trying to get through (in the absence of any other viable option) but not deliberately trying to cause damage.

MerchantofVenice · 17/08/2016 20:58

(The 'exactly' was to VeryBitchy)

TheGreenKnight · 17/08/2016 21:03

Wondering what law allows anyone, however justifiably annoyed, to commit criminal damage.

Gottagetmoving · 17/08/2016 21:04

Exactly.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 17/08/2016 21:14

Not necessarily. And it's yet to be established that OP thought her actions were likely to cause damage. She may have thought she was going to be able to get the pram through without causing damage.

We won't know though until/if she comes back to clarify.

Wonkydonkey44 · 17/08/2016 21:16

Totally agree , total dick heads who park on payments !
I try and be careful but I thought it was illegal to park on pavements or obstruct them? Maybe wrong ...

DoloresVanCartier · 17/08/2016 21:21

Very bitchy. That's very true but I doubt she will return and admit she knew she was going to cause damage. I think we both know it's likely to have been a bit of the rage about the twatty parking and she knew she would damage the car. Hey ho! Anyway. I'm off to iron uniform for tomorrow and force DS to get into his bed Smile

user1471432527

What a thoroughly horrible thing to do. It disgusts me.

NeedAnotherGlass · 17/08/2016 21:40

DelicatePreciousThing1 what do you suggest the OP does instead in that situation?

AvengeTheDoc · 17/08/2016 21:43

But in those places that aren't London, and haven't passed the by laws, which means cars can park legally on pavement/ the roadside, aren't the cars as eligible and legally on the path as pedestrians whilst sure it's annoying for pedestrians and I'm not calling for everybody to park on the pavements in protest, but in those places pedestrians surely have no more extra right ( legally) than pedestrians.

Dixiechickonhols · 17/08/2016 21:46

It's called a kerb in the uk not curb. Didn't know it was illegal to park on one in London.

Our local residents association is trying to get lorries to stop parking on the kerb at the top of the estate (residents can't walk past safely to shops). There are double yellow lines and double yellow lines on the kerb. Police say it is a civil matter. Council say they have no resources to send traffic wardens. Often it is council vehicles parked there.

TheSultanofPingu · 17/08/2016 21:46

Cars parked on the pavement can be a real danger to pedestrians. Sarcastic comments such as "Don't you know how to cross a road?" are pathetic.
I would never scratch a car if it could be avoided, but the safety of a real live human would take priority over a piece of metal any day.

SleepDeprivedAndCranky · 17/08/2016 21:51

Yabu.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 17/08/2016 21:56

Surely you are just being a goady drama llama here? On the street I love on we HAVE to park on the pavement to make the road wide enough for emergency vehicles to get through. If you scratchet my car I be so furious, how entitled can ne person be?!?!?

So you'll be happy if a parent pushing child/ren or partner pushing their OH has to step into the road, to go around your car into the road and then gets run over?, but hey!...aslong as your car is safe that ok...carry on!

In case you can't/won't understand...cars are replacable, loved ones AREN'T.

Am I right in thinking that Emergency vehicles are "hard enough" to move a car out of the way?
