To think my DD 13 is too young to put sun tan lotion on

She's the most clumsy slapdash person I know, she's becoming fiercely independent and wants to put her own lotion on. It's 40 degrees!

I was putting my own sun cream on at that age, apart from my back. If she burns it will teach her a lesson

At 13 she really should be old enough to put it in herself.

This isn't about age or being to young, it's about her not doing it properly?

My Dd is 12 and puts her own on correctly, despite being fairly slapdash with most other stuff.

I would say 13 is too old not to be able to do it independently! Could you get the stuff that goes on a colour and dries clear so she can see where she's missed?

Not at all. She's 13. Kids are expected to make put it on themselves from age 8 at the summer camps I work at.

At 13 I wouldn't want my mother rubbing cream all over my body.

Of course she wants to do it herself.

Show her how to do it properly then leave her to it.

My 9 year old mostly does her own but with the coloured stuff and if I'm not around she and her friends help each other reapply.
At 13 I would have thought she'd be mortified at you doing it for her.

She's 13! Let her do it herself, FFS! (Give her some help with her back.)

Dd1 5 puts hers on with a bit of help. A 13 yo can definitely do it. And ffs, should be doing world gone mad

Well as she's 13 she probably deals with her own periods and personal hygiene or is she too slapdash there too?

Our primary school children do it themselves as soon as they start on reception. Obviously just arms legs and faces

My nearly-5 year old and very meaty-8 year old do their own! They are pretty good, and ask for help where they need it.

DSS 11 has started to do his own suncream. However the first time he did miss bits and got burnt. Now one of us watches him while he does it to make sure he covers everything, and remind him of places like back of his neck, back of his knees etc. Couldn't you do similar?

You mean at 13 she has never done it herself? She stands there and let's you do it?

My 3 & 5 year olds apply it with supervision. I put it on my hand. They rub it on. I check the gaps.

I failed on my back at about 20 and lived with the blotchy consequences of trying to spray it by myself until the tan faded away.

She needs to be able to do it herself. At what point would she be "old enough"? 16 when legally able to live by herself?

Her body might be able to make a baby. If she had a baby, would she be able to put suncream on it?

That's hardly the same, catsize. It's a lot easier putting it all over someone else than yourself.

My 8 and 10 yo DSs do theirs every day. The only help is if they are on the beach so I make sure their chest/shoulders/back are done properly as obviously in the sea these are the bits that potentially will burn (and have not seen much sun)

Oh Christ, she's definitely old enough. I'd be mortified if my mum was trying to still put sun cream on for me at 13
