That having a bikini wax shouldn't be a necessary part of any job?

I've been watching the amazing gymnastics at the olympics and every time I can't help but wonder if they are all happy to have such revealing gym costumes. I would hate to have a camera doing a slow mo when I'm legs akimbo in the air wearing so little even if the camera angles seem to be discrete.

I have tried to look up if there is a rule about the cut and if they wanted could they wear little shorts but I can't find anything. I did read if they remove a wedgie they get marked down?!

AIBU to think that in this day and age it seems a bit odd that these elite athletes need to be so scantily clad and that they probably have more to worry about than waxing, ingrowing hairs and itchiness in the run up to the games?

It isn't more important than what they do at all Felas. Can we not care about both? I find it disturbing that, as so many people have said here, that if young women object to the outfits, they're dropped from the team.

I find that disturbing. Is like to think the the best athletes are chosen, not the ones who will so what they're told.

It reminds me of the Brazilian surfer Silvana Lima who hasn't been able to get sponsorship because she's not pretty enough. Is that really the bar we want to set for our women athletes? Do we really want women like Simons Biles bring told to wear bows in their hair? She's the world's best gymnast. Why the fuck does she need a bow?

And I didn't say you were a crap mum volleyball.

Go GB Gym Team! That floor performance was amazing!

meck · 16/08/2016 19:41

*A not another.

Yes, it is disappointing

I do agree with this point. Why are people bothered if her hair is "straight enough" or not??!?!? I think this is more to do with racism than 'pornification' though.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 16/08/2016 19:42

If we had all just slapped each other on the back said 'well done' and never complained about perceived inequalities women's liberation wouldn't have got very far would it. Also what a boring thread that would be.

Sorry that CBA to read so many pages but out of curiosity for how many Olympic gymnasts is the sport their job, as the thread title says, does anyone know how many are professional gymnasts?

expatinscotland · 16/08/2016 19:44

'Of course pubic hair removal is due to pornification.'

People have been removing body hair, including pubic hair, for centuries.

milkyface · 16/08/2016 19:52

Why can't you just remove your hair because you want to?

Why is it assumed that some women remove all hair to either look like a porn actress, or because that's what's expected by men, or because you've been told to by your gym coach.

Do you really think that some of those gymnasts don't remove hair anyway, regardless of their profession?! I'd bet some do!

Believe it or not, It some of us do it because it's just how we like it, it's more comfortable for me personally. No other reason.

Why is there so much outrage about gymnasts effing hair. Like someone else said, what they do is so much more important than their bloody bikini line!!

ThatsWotSheSaid · 16/08/2016 20:00

Yes some maybe most would remove it anyway but maybe there are young girls who have left the sport because they felt uncomfortable having to reveal their groin to the world or weren't able/willing to wax. Maybe some gymnasts would wear hair clips bows and glitter spray like a five year old even if it wasn't a requirement of the sport but some how I doubt that.

It's all gone a bit harshly crazy in here since I was last on, people shouting about labia, porn and the Quran Confused

JigglypuffsCaptor · 16/08/2016 20:01

Batshit*

SpeakNoWords · 16/08/2016 20:04

Milkyface, do you think that more women, particularly younger ones, remove all their pubic hair compared to in previous decades? If it has become more popular, is there an explanation as to why, when once it was not so commonplace?

expatinscotland · 16/08/2016 20:08

'Believe it or not, It some of us do it because it's just how we like it, it's more comfortable for me personally. No other reason. '

This. I have pale skin and had loads of black body hair. I enjoyed being athletic from an early age, lived in a hot climate and wanted to show off my muscles and get a tan. I wanted to flaunt my body without being body hair what was noticed first. It was also hot and trapped sweat. This was back in the early 80s. So I chose to remove body hair.

I said 'had' because I've been waxing for so long (again, MY chosen form of hair removal) that I've since destroyed a lot of the hair follicles.

It's not been amateur for ages. A lot of athletes have contracts with their governing bodies and receive direct funding.

I suppose it's like being a contractor instead of being an employee.

And that's an argument for keeping skimpy outfits and zero visible body hair compulsory for elite athletes, how? Hmm

JigglypuffsCaptor · 16/08/2016 20:18

So what do you want? Those of whom are complaining?

Do you want the rules and regulations of all sports changed to suit a feminist agenda?

JacquettaWoodville · 16/08/2016 20:20

Back on the first page there was mention of camel toe for cyclists.

I think that's crotch padding, isn't it?

The rules and regs don't seem to need changing, it seems to be more of a culture. Perhaps the national teams need to offer a choice of uniform so that each gymnast can choose what they wear.
