That having a bikini wax shouldn't be a necessary part of any job?

I've been watching the amazing gymnastics at the olympics and every time I can't help but wonder if they are all happy to have such revealing gym costumes. I would hate to have a camera doing a slow mo when I'm legs akimbo in the air wearing so little even if the camera angles seem to be discrete.

I have tried to look up if there is a rule about the cut and if they wanted could they wear little shorts but I can't find anything. I did read if they remove a wedgie they get marked down?!

AIBU to think that in this day and age it seems a bit odd that these elite athletes need to be so scantily clad and that they probably have more to worry about than waxing, ingrowing hairs and itchiness in the run up to the games?

I love the mums on here defending men getting their rocks off watching their daughters wearing tiny tight outfits.

Be a gymnast! Oh, you have to dress so everyone can see your labia but that's okay. And if you don't agree, you don't get to compete.

"Look. They have a choice. Wear the selected kit, or don't play."

Nice Hmm

And somehow men can compete in volleyball and be gymnasts and whatever else without wearing tiny tiny outfits and yet, the judges are still able to assess.

Next on MN. Becoming a prostitute or lapdancer is a free choice and perfectly valid career choice.

PopFizz · 16/08/2016 18:52

I never ever showed my labia in 10 years of wearing a leotard. Hmm

I don't like it and I'm allowed not to. Men don't have to wear skimpy skintight clothing to play volleyball. It doesn't affect performance or your ability to hit the ball.

If my daughter ever wanted to play sport, I'd encourage her to do something where having a spray on outfit wasn't considered a necessary part of being on the team

Felascloak · 16/08/2016 19:02

Wtf lynda? You cannot see gymnasts labia.
Do you also think swimming costumes are for the purpose of men getting their rocks off? Let your DDs go swimming?
What an odd POV about gymnasts

JenLindley · 16/08/2016 19:03

volleyballmum you are coming across as one of those people who interrupts unrelated conversations to drop in that her child is an awesome [whatever] no-one was talking about your daughter. That poster was talking about gymnasts.

meck · 16/08/2016 19:03

Showing your labia Hmm Don't be so silly.

Now that is just disturbing and I don't think anybody has done that have they now.

SoupDragon · 16/08/2016 19:03

Are you confusing gymnastics with pole dancing?

This is her comment. I have read her post. The volleyball comment was part of a separate paragraph later down the post.

Of course pubic hair removal is due to pornification.

Stop being hysterical. Pornification isn't even a word!

LadyDeadpool · 16/08/2016 19:15

This came up on my newsfeed and I did go off on a rant about it because it really pissed me off.

LyndaNotLinda · 16/08/2016 19:21

No I don't want segregation. I want women to acknowledge that the outfits that women are forced to wear in some sports contribute to the pornification* of our culture.

And this attitude from young women's parents of: Look. They have a choice. Wear the selected kit, or don't play.

saddens me greatly.

This thread is infuriating. Firstly, it's a bit weird to assume gymnasts are all waxed. Who knows? I did a lot of leotard wearing as a teen and certainly didn't wax, never had a stray pube.
Second, why are we so ashamed of women's bodies? These gymnasts have worked hard and their form is a crucial part of the sport. It's kind of odd to want them to cover up to avoid men looking at them. I've never heard a gymnast (or a diver or a trampoliner) complain about their costume. It isn't a problem.
Men in gym/trampolining/diving also wear revealing tight clothes.
It's very different than something like high heels that have a detrimental effect on women to wear.
For some reason the women's gym really has people riled this year, I don't get it, they are amazing

Felascloak · 16/08/2016 19:30

Actually a penny has just dropped for me, this thread is a classic example of how what women wear is more important than what they do. Very disappointing.

JenLindley · 16/08/2016 19:32

Yeah. Goady.

How on earth is that goady? Confused

JenLindley · 16/08/2016 19:35

this thread is a classic example of how what women wear is more important than what they do.

Isn't that exactly what OP and others have the issue with? That the appearance of the gymnasts (no pubes/underwear showing or marks deducted) is relevant when it shouldn't be?
