Today it was my recycling bin that had been literally half filled overnight by a neighbour (it was already half full but now is full). They do get collected today but 1. I still put things in it in the morning & 2. some of the stuff was garden waste which shouldn't be in there so the bin men could refuse to empty my entire bin.

I haven't seen who does it but based on whose bin is already full & who would be rude enough to do it every fortnight without asking, it is my neighbours who I can't stand because of past history of being utterly selfish horrors including once trying to steal my bin (and worse but there's bin history is what I'm saying )

I moved the place I leave my bins out so they're on far side of my property away from them but they still do it. WWYD? Leave it right back on my drive so they have to trespass to do it then I've got more of a beef with them, but I may forget to put it out for collection (!) Or mention it but how? It's p*ing me off them using it regularly cos they're horrid neighbours plus they're putting the wrong stuff in which could leave me with an unemptied bin.

I should add there's no man in my household which was when they started taking the p*$$ so I hate dealing with them on a personal level. I'd love to be able to send someone else over to have a word man to man but it's just me.

Man to man? It's the 21st century. Woman up and go and talk to them!

Drill a hole through lid and attach a pad lock, its not on.
Opposite to you but I had a lady who would come up to the front of my property and steal my recycling - very odd.

My local council advises people to do this with black bags (the green bins aren't used for recycling, only garden waste) since they introduced the micro black bins which are generally speaking not fit for purpose.

That said I was embarrassed beyond words when my husband did so without actually checking with the neighbour first.

Just take bin out at last minute in the morning.

Desperately irritating esp when putting random stuff in the wrong bin means that the bin men refuse to empty them. I would hide them if poss or get sprinklers with a motion sensor - soak the buggers!!

Go over and tell them that if they need to use your bin, if there is space, that's fine, as long as they check with you first so you can make sure it's the correct stuff going in.

I think it's confidence why I'd prefer someone else to speak to them. I feel disrespected as it's not an accident they've done it. Also our paths don't cross often so I'd have to knock on rather than casually mentioning. And they'd lie they knew nowt about it even if they did (past experience) but maybe it'd be enough for them to stop.

I do lack confidence since being on my own & generally avoid confrontations. But they have a car so could take it to our local tip less than 5 mins away, no excuse.

Arfarfanarf Bin lock sounds an option, where have you seen them?

My neighbours and I all do this if a bin isn't full and yours is we all pop the bag in the nearest empty one it's not a problem round here. If its such a problem for you ask them to stop. Our council gives you as many recycling bins as you need so perhaps order an extra bin and leave it outside their house so they don't need to use yours. The garden waste I would return to them or report them to the council they should pay for a green bin if they need one.

My neighbour where i used to live did this she was batty she would split it between 3 bins i think she was hiding her wine bottles 😂 I caught her putting her grandchilds nappy in my bin so said is your bin full as it was a long time since i put shitty nappies in my bin a bit of sarcasim is all it took for her to stop. If you cant talk to these neighbours you are never going to solve it just say to them do it in the street if you dont want go go to the door or get binlocks like a pp suggested

I'm glad I'm not over reacting not the waste issue even if people don't understand why I'm a wuss reluctant to deal with them directly!

We have green bins. They're just lazy and if it gets found it's not their own bin left full!
I should say I'm 99% sure it's them but that's my other slight reservation with not having seen them do it. But it's got their style all over it. My other neighbours are polite or don't fill their own bins.

I'm sorry but I don't massively see the problem. If you put things in in the morning then why not just put the bin out in the morning. Obviously speak to them about the garden waste but I wouldn't mind about a bit of recycling. it's not like she's asking you to take it to the tip!

They used to have 2 recycle bins, a big one and a small one, but only seem to put 1 bin out today, maybe they need to reorder amother bin but they were doing this even when they had 2 wheelie bins.

It amazed me how much trash they generate. But frm what they put in mine it's all lucozade bottles nothing is crushed. I'm sure they'd manage on 1 bin if they crushed, lazy s*ds!

Actually I completely understand this I'm not a nervous person or anything and I box but I never felt so attacked and taken advantage of by neighbours as when my husband died, I have no idea if this is proven but in my experience people behave like a pack of wolves to a woman on her own, what is wrong with needing a man to face up to neighbours etc anyway, being tough is admirable but if you lose all feminity and vulnerability don't complain that your partner doesn't adore you and is protective of you, why is it so wrong to be feminine and vulnerable. Imo it's braver to be your true feminine self than a tough outer image which isn't always the genuine person.

My neighbours do this. My son caught one in the act and told her to take her rubbish home. Unfortunately, I can't see the bins from the house when they are out for collection so she has put stuff in a few times leaving the bin so full the lid won't shut.
Another put their extra rubbish in first collection after moving in. I'd gone to put extra in my bin to find it overflowing. Distinctive bin sacks made it easy to find who had done it. They got their rubbish back.
I have toyed with a gravity bin lock but prefer to leave the bins behind the gates until morning. The phantom bin fillers round here are nocturnal.

Fairygodmother if you don't like confrontation (I don't either), and if you can't absolutely prove which neighbours are doing this, then a bin lock would seem to be your best option.

Arfanarf I have been googling bin locks but so far can only see ordinary ones with padlocks, not the ones you mention - with a key but which automatically opens when emptied. Do you think you could post a link? (Pretty please?)

I dont know why my neighbour did it she was a single woman our bins are huge and we also hadboxes she seemed to take pride in having the emptiest recycling box while everybodies elses were rammed full andratttiling as we took oursout .

I have lived here as a single woman, a partnered woman with kids and now a lone parent. No one messed with the territory when my ex was here (which was years). As a lone parent I've experienced exactly what you described. Wolf pack mentality. Society does view you & your place in it differently. If you've never been in my position it's understandable it might sound bizarre from the outside. All I can say is lucky you!

Spaniel I can't really see bins from house either plus they're kept on the front as no way to get them to the back of house. I thought moving one for collection to front door area might deter them but I think they do it at night too as he's a night worker.

Either talk to the neighbours and explain that you don 'think mind them using the bin for the right kind overdue , but could they check if you have any stuff to go in or buy and fit a wheelie bin lid lock. Problem solved

Even if the space in my bin is going to go 'unused' it still really pisses me off when randoms fill it with their rubbish. Just feels cheeky to me. But if your neighbours are putting stuff in that could risk you not getting your bin emptied at all that's really annoying.

I'd leave putting your bin out until the very last minute and keep it inaccessible until then if possible. With bin locks wouldn't there be a point when you have to unlock it so your rubbish can be collected and there's still a risk that people will dump extra stuff then?
