do your young children wear them too? Or do they still wear a one piece?

My 3 year old DD wears boys shorts (the speedo kind). If I know it's a day that it will be hard to get sun block on her I make her wear a swim shirt, but generally I just buy water proof spray and spray her up.

I don't see the point in putting a full cover one piece on a 3 year old. She's more comfortable in just shorts. (Her spiderman ones).

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 09/08/2016 12:20

I am very fair skinned and moley so last time I went somewhere hot on holiday I wore a long top and below the knee shorts type thing. It's nicer than it sounds! It's a kind of burkini I think, though I didn't wear it for religious reasons really. My DD is 20mo and wears a hat and a below the knee, below the elbow one piece as she is also very fair like me.

heatherwithapee · 09/08/2016 12:23

If it fits you and you'd feel comfortable in it then hell yes - wear it.

If it's a poor fit or you'd feel self conscious then don't.

Charley50 · 09/08/2016 12:44

Bigger women look much better in bikinis than swim suits IMO.
Go for it!
I would try and get a tan at home first or even a couple of sunbeds so you have a tan when you get there.

Charley50 · 09/08/2016 12:56

I quite like bikini tops with a bit of fringing hanging down for balancing out tummies that one is self-conscious about.

feellikeahugefailure · 09/08/2016 13:05

I'm sure you look fab xx

HemanOrSheRa · 09/08/2016 15:47

I posted upthread that I am a size 16(ish) and intended to wear a bikini on holiday. Well. I am here on holiday now sat in my bikini on the balcony having been on the beach, in the sea and walked back to our room in only my bikini. And I can confirm.... nobody gave a shiney shite Grin.

TrickyD · 09/08/2016 15:59

Ok folks, emboldened by this thread I have been out and bought a bikini. It must be 20 years since I last wore one. DH is delighted, he reckons he can't understand why I ever gave them up.

We are going to a hot place next week where I know there will be plenty of women larger than me happily wearing them.

Brown tummy here I come!

Sleepingonthebus · 09/08/2016 18:43

I'm sitting in my bikini right now on my lounger. It took balls to walk from the lounger to the pool when we first arrived but now I couldn't care less.

My kids gave me a round of applause and said they were proud of me.

Lweji · 09/08/2016 18:51

Well done to the new bikini wearers. :)

MeganChips · 09/08/2016 18:57

I have also just bought my first adult bikini as a result of this thread, thank you!

I'm a size 10 but not toned but do you know what? Fuck it.

I've bought this one.

I am a size 28 uk, 24 us (where I live) and have worn a bikini on four continents' public beaches. Have never so much as gotten a negative comment. If there were dirty looks, I didn't notice as I was having too much fun in the sun!

namechangingagainagain · 09/08/2016 21:06

New bikini wearer here. I took 3 to Italy this year and no one-piece.
Strangely this is the biggest I've ever been. As a size 10 20 yr old I would wear a tankini as was worried about my flabby belly..... Well 4 children and 2 stone later I've taken the plunge and I can confirm no-one was blinded.... Or indeed gave a shit. Plus I was far far more comfy and looked better than I did in a one piece.

Go for it

Sunnydays365 · 09/08/2016 21:10

Sunnydays365 · 09/08/2016 22:35

Thank you donajimena ☉😆

GarlicMistake · 10/08/2016 04:06

How FANTASTIC is this thread? :) :)

Megan, your bikini's really nice! You don't see many balconette tops like that, yet it's the most flattering shape for many of us.

Am envious of you all going to get sun on your tummies - I'm stuck in the prematurely autumnal Midlands. I shall break out the St Tropez and be with you in spirit.

Chopstick17 · 13/08/2016 09:48

Just back from a positively mediterranean holiday in Devon!!?? Yes Devon! I got my body out there in my bikini. Normally a 10-12 but untoned and definitely a 12 after the pasties and fish n chips etc but I did not care one bit! This thread was in the back of my mind. Thanks all.

NorbertDentressangle · 13/08/2016 10:05

We're just back from Spain and I can only echo what everyone else has already said - GO FOR IT!!

I saw women of all shapes, sizes and ages on the beach wearing bikinis.

In the whole 2 weeks I only saw a handful of women wearing one piece costumes (one of those was a Spanish woman in her 70s who wore a bikini every other time I saw her, the others I suspect were British).
