This is what I love about, say, Latin culture. On the beaches of Miami, you will see hordes of the most gorgeous models in bikinis, and you will also see women of all ages and sizes in bikinis, walking tall, not giving a damn, and I think each and every one of them looks superb.

Different size but similar issue: I saw a women in her early seventies wearing a bikini. She had abs and amazing skin, and I thought too right you ought to wear a bikini and not covering up in some billowing floral parachute.

echelon · 05/08/2016 11:42

OP
You are NOT "too fat" to wear a bikini. Bikinis are made in sizes much larger than 18s!
I would bet my last dollar that your other half is 100% right, and you look gorgeous in it.

I weigh 18 stone and a size 20/22. I own two bikinis and a tankini as well as a one-piece suit.
I often wear my bikinis as 1) they're more comfy and convenient, and 2) I look damn hot in them.

I'm currently losing weight for health reasons but would still wear a bikini whether I were a size 22 or a size 10.

People on the beach are more concerned with having fun and probably feeling self conscious about the way THEY look.
They're not looking at you! Trust me!

(if you do get any scornful looks or sniggers, hold your head up high and sashay past, confidant that you look good and you have a lovely man by your side who loves you for you, whilst THEY have nothing better to do then make immature comments about people they don't even know).

Go for it if it's what you want, and have a fab time!

lostoldlogin2 · 05/08/2016 11:44

I live in spain. people of all sizes and ages wear bikinis here.

Joystir58 · 05/08/2016 11:50

I'm size 1 8 and I wear a bikini. relax and enjoy your holiday

Deux · 05/08/2016 11:58

OP, don't be daft. You'll look fab in a bikini. Just make sure, as with all sizes, that it fits you well.

When you try on your bikinis here in Blighty you might have a dialogue in your head that's negative but you must ignore that and imagine you're on a beach.

If you turn up at the beach in some kind of swimsuit dress you'll have everyone looking at you as some kind of curiosity as everyone else will be in bikinis.

A pretty cover up/kaftan and you'll look fab.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 05/08/2016 12:06

OP I'm going on holiday next week and had my boring one piece swimsuits ready to pack. I'm a size 16 and haven't worn a bikini for years because I hate my size (I am doing something about it but it's not happening quickly!). However, your thread has inspired me to try on the bikini I bought when I started going to the gym. DH loved it and said he couldn't understand why I wouldn't want to wear a bikini.

So thank you!!

maggiethemagpie · 05/08/2016 12:54

Tankini or high waisted bikini the perfect solution for the less body confident! I am not fat, but very flabby tummy after two c sects and have an overhang (my 'podge' as I call it) and this is the only way I will wear a two piece.

DietCockBreak · 05/08/2016 13:30

It's nothing to do with size and everything to do with how you feel. There are size 8/10 women who wouldn't wear one, and size 24/26 who rock a bikini.

I think it's good for there to be body confident women of all sizes around so that young girls (and everyone else) sees what normal is - and it's NOT the photoshopped, super tall, skinny, model type that is used everywhere to represent women in tv, advertising and the fashion industry - it's a wide range of different body types.

GarlicMistake · 05/08/2016 14:30

That's a really good point about folks seeing what normal is, Diet. Normal is variety! Thin, fat, flabby, firm, dimpled, crinkled, smooth, plain, pierced, scarred, tattooed, brown, olive, cream, white, freckled, patchy, hairy, bald, with & without ostomies or prosthetics.

It's totally mad to suppose there are only a couple of templates for human bodies, but somehow popular culture instils this bonkers belief. Luckily, actual humanity constantly proves it wrong :)

MorrisZapp · 05/08/2016 18:06

Thank you lovely people who liked my pic! I wore a cossie when I was younger and slimmer. Wtf was I thinking? They flatten your boobs and leave you with a hot, damp tummy on the sunlounger.

I discovered quality, bra sized bikinis a few years ago and I'll never go back. Freya are good but I haven't loved their last few collections style wise. Panache and Fantasie are my go to's, once you know your size eBay is your best friend.

The bottoms in the pic are the adjustable side type, you can wear them almost as shorts, or tighten the sides for a more traditional bikini pant shape.

MorrisZapp · 05/08/2016 18:07

There was a lady with one leg sunbathing in a bikini next to us last holiday. She looked ace.

BuonoEstente · 05/08/2016 18:13

I'm a size 16 and very unconfident about my body. I braved a bikini on holiday last year and after 5 minutes of thinking everyone was looking at me I realised that actually no-one was. They're too busy having their own fun. By the end of the week I was posing for pictures (for my husband I should add) and I love them as I look so relaxed.

twilightcafe · 05/08/2016 18:19

I'm on my way back home from Brittany and Biarritz. I can tell you right now that women of all shapes and sizes were wearing bikinis. No one cared.

And i didn't notice the men going through all this swimwear angst. Beer guts, hairy backs and saggy bits displayed without a care in the world.

Cocolepew · 05/08/2016 18:25

I bet men don't beat themselves up like this. They just throw on their trunks/shorts and dont care what anyone thinks.
You look fab morris

Cocolepew · 05/08/2016 18:25

Didn't see twilights post Blush

Janey50 · 05/08/2016 18:30

Wear whatever you want and feel comfortable in,OP. I am about the same size as you,and I personally wouldn't wear a bikini,as I would get sick of the sniffy remarks aimed at me. But that's just me,a bit thin-skinned. However, what I have noticed, time and time again,is this. Catty remarks about my size always come from women who are either considerably larger than me,or are not exactly what you would call 'picture perfect' themselves. Women who are a perfect size 10 and beautiful with it,never seem to have an issue with my size. Insecurity on the larger women's part maybe?

WeAllHaveWings · 05/08/2016 18:50

Well how would you feel if people are staring and talking about you?

I think most people give everyone big/small/average a second glance in a bikini, then move onto the next person, it would be very strange behaviour to start and talk about someone, especially a size 18 which isn't really that big/only one size above average. Who gives a shit what bitches like that say anyway?

Statelychangers · 05/08/2016 18:52

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in - swimsuits are a bit chilly around the middle when wet but I don't think any swimwear is flattering - my legs will; be flabby and white regardless of bikini style...they are all just bloody awful unless you are an underwear model.
And swimwear does not feel like me - like the kind of stuff I'd normally wear. And now I'm supposed to give a shit that I look Irish because of my swimwear, but not supposed to give a shit about my body size? Confused - I am not trying to look like another nationality, what's the point in that, my blue skin will be a glowing beacon of my nationality anyway!
This year I have packed a couple of bikini tops with swim shorts and a Seafolly 1950's style gingham swimsuit.

MrsDallowaySaid · 05/08/2016 20:53

I am on holiday in Croatia currently and have worn a bikini top and shorts for the first time ever... I'm a size 20/22 with bug tum and thighs. I am also very white. No one cared and I fully intend to wear my bikini bottom without the cover up shorts tomorrow!

blueturtle6 · 05/08/2016 20:58

Size 16, wobbly tummy from baby. I prefer them to one piece, they have better boob support

Daydream007 · 06/08/2016 19:16

Sod what people think. Do what makes you happy!

gamerwidow · 06/08/2016 19:22

I think the people wearing swim dresses and all in ones draw more attention to themselves then those in a bikini when on holiday abroad. Bikinis are so ubiquitous on all shapes and sizes that you will feel out of place if you wear anything else.

OreosAreTasty · 06/08/2016 19:25

The only way someone is too fat for something is if the size is wrong... For eg if your bikini was a 10 you'd be too fat for it.
Does it fit?
Then yeah. Crack on. Wear it! Enjoy

SuperFlyHigh · 06/08/2016 19:29

If you feel really uncomfortable in a skimpy bikini then try a tankini or nice swimming costume.

Good wraps and kaftans are great cover ups which you can put on and take as an when you feel comfy.

Summerwood1 · 06/08/2016 19:38

You go for it. Why should we worry about what other people think, their opinion really doesn't matter.
