I didn't have the confidence to wear a bikini as a toned size 12 years ago. Now I'm verging on a 16 and just feel annoyed with myself! I wore a bikini last year but deleted all the pictures because I was so horrified at what I looked like. The stupid thing? There were women bigger than me on the beach looking fab in their bikinis. Honestly, most people are too busy worrying about what they look like to notice anybody else 😊

BalloonSlayer · 05/08/2016 08:50

I was just saying this sort of thing to DH recently.

I was worried I am too old to wear a bikini but said to him I would probably get one as the thing is you get to the beach and see all shapes and sizes and ages in bikinis or even topless and think "Blimey! What was I worrying about? No one cares! Wish I'd got one now."

You will have more chance of getting one that suits you if you get one before you go than if you have to buy one while you're out there.

Have some confidence, have a great time - you'll look fab!

Eliza22 · 05/08/2016 08:57

Go on holiday. Wear the bikini. It really IS that simple.

And have a wonderful time!!

Roussette · 05/08/2016 08:58

You look fab Morris

TalcAndTurnips · 05/08/2016 09:02

I am not sure where I hang in the world of bikinis, but just wanted to say that Morris is a total Babe-raham Lincoln.

I'm a similar size to you and have just had my first DC. I have always and will continue to wear a bikini. I can honestly say I don't think anyone other than me has ever given a shit about what I wear on the beach*

*other than my DP because he loves my boobs Grin

Sleepingonthebus · 05/08/2016 09:16

I've recently lost a lot of weight and down to a 16. I'm going to give a bikini a shot this year (although taking my swimsuit as backup). I have lots of wobbly bits that need some work but I'm going to ignore these for the next couple of weeks and go for it.

Chopstick17 · 05/08/2016 09:17

Wear it!

michelle303 · 05/08/2016 09:17

What backwardpossum & CakeNinja said! No one is too fat to wear a bikini, and holidays are for relaxing. So go and wear your bikini, have the break that you deserve and sod what anyone else thinks.

PoorOldEeyore · 05/08/2016 09:24

I've just returned from Menorca too (was very hot!)

I would normally only wear a one piece but this year decided to wear a bikini. Mine was a halter neck which was surprisingly flattering. The bottoms were not skimpy little ones - I too have a very stretch marked belly - but adjustable medium briefs with little tie sides which meant they could look like little shorts or smaller like briefs. Think the set was from M&S!
You need to go through the thought process of what you think when YOU observe a generous sized lady :) wearing a bikini. Even if it doesn't fit particularly well, that's the most I would normally think - usually something like, ....ooh look she's my kinda size, she's enjoying the beach/sea/pool, ooh I'm hot, fancy a ice cream, think I'll have a swim...
That fleeting thought is the worst I would think, I certainly wouldn't judge.

Those Curvy Kate swimsuits are amazing! Is there an alternative though for ladies with smaller cup sizes? I see some beautiful lingerie and swimwear but it's too big :(

mrsfuzzy · 05/08/2016 09:24

as long as you don't wear a mankini you'll be fine, get out there and sock it to 'em ! be big, bold and beautiful Smile.

ALLthedinosaurs · 05/08/2016 09:33

The fact is, there will be some miserable person judging you where ever you are, whatever you're wearing, whatever you're doing, whatever you look like, because some people won't acknowledge any other way to make themselves feel better. That says everything about them and nothing about you. Most people won't be thinking about you, and some people will be thinking you look fabulous.

The opinions of miserable strangers are irrelevant.

YABVU to not wear it Wink

pillowaddict · 05/08/2016 09:33

Literally the first time I wore a bikini was last year after having two dc, size 16 and 15 1/2 stone. Kicking myself for years I told myself I was too fat (was a lovely size 12 as a teenager but hid underneath layers!). This year I keep saying I'll lose more before my next holiday, still hope to (6 weeks so hardly masses anyway), but I plan to again - this time not at a private pool area so nervous. I bought a fringed bikini as felt it may make me less self conscious but my other, first ever, is electric blue and fabulous! You have to wear it with confidence and not let others make you feel bad about your choices.

green18 · 05/08/2016 09:40

I'm a size 10/12 but have wobbly bits and cellulite( I'm 45) and I do feel a bit self conscious the first time I strip off. I'm definitely one of those people who looks better clothed than undressed and I'm happy with that because I'm usually clothed lol! But, I use a bit of self tanner before and while away and always have a sarong/large scarf(for walking about) big hat , big shades and style it out! Go for it!

green18 · 05/08/2016 09:46

By the way, your partner sounds great. Enjoy your holiday with him and don't let your body hang ups spoil your fun. Every other woman feels self conscious, even the slimmer ones, it's what magazines and celebs have done to us. Take a deep breath and just do it!

HemanOrSheRa · 05/08/2016 09:46

Well, if you are too fat for a bikini, OP, then so am I! I shall be wearing mine anyway. I'm a size 16 with big boobs and bum. I definitely recommend Brastop as others have. The Curvy Kate bikinis are amazing. I ended up buying 3 bikini sets.

Brastop's delivery and returns are really quick. I suggest ordering as much as you can afford in different styles and take your time trying on at home.

The thing I have been doing in the run up to our holiday next week, is rather than shoving the bikinis in the drawer, I keep trying them on. It's given me the confidence to think 'actually I look quite nice in them' Grin. A well fitting bikini in a colour and style that you love will make you look and feel fabulous!

MissMoo22 · 05/08/2016 10:01

As someone of a very similar weight and size to you.....I would only wear it if you are comfortable in it. It's all great saying go for it but if you are really paranoid in it then that's when people's glances will get to you. If you just think 'fuck it and fuck them' and wear it with pride then I can nearly guarantee that most of the glances you get will be people thinking 'fuck, I wish I had her confidence' and not about your size.

I usually take bikinis on holiday and to be honest a lot of the time I'm too worried about what people think and end up covering them up with a nice kaftan or wearing shorts on my lower half. But will wear the bikini if it's a quieter hotel with guests who don't even look my way. And I love seeing someone much bigger than me in her bikini coz I think if she can rock that without giving a shit then I should follow her lead and stick mine on aswell.

Going to Menorca in 3 weeks, I have a few really good supportive bikini tops and a swim skirt to pair them with, an underwired tankini if I feel too paranoid in the bikini tops and a swimsuit for the water park. Not sure which I'll wear more of but as long as I have them with me then I can wear whichever one my confidence lets me.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/08/2016 10:18

If you want to wear one do it!

I wore a bikini for the first time in Florida last year (I was a 14-16). I'd taken it with me but didn't think I'd wear it and then I realised women of all shapes and sizes we wearing them. I've put on weight since then but I'm aiming to lose it so I can wear it again next year.

The only problem I had was my poor pasty stomach hadn't seen the sun in 40 years and, despite smothering it in sun cream, it got rather burned!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/08/2016 10:20

Oh and please avoid the Panache Veronica bikini shorts. They look lovely when they are dry but in water the fold over bit fills up and looks as though you've got a ring around your middle. If you then try to flatten it down it produces bubbles. Not a good look...

NovemberInDailyFailLand · 05/08/2016 10:33

Looking fantastic, Morris!

MillicentKing · 05/08/2016 10:35

It is confidence.
I will wear a bikini on my hols, but I will be very self conscious.

How can I explain? I am tall, slim and very toned. I am a runner, but injured at the moment so have been doing classes and swimming which has totally made my upper body look great. I am doing this to keep my running fitness and but mainly for my mental health (running was my sanity saver so I'm desperately trying to fill that void).

I feel that people might think I'm showing off. I am happy with my body. It is strong and fit, but I don't like to draw attention to it. I don't hide under baggy clothes or anything, I just get on with my life.

Does that make any sense. Please don't think I'm stealth boasting.

Bantanddec · 05/08/2016 10:56

I hope you have a lovely holiday, don't let these worries ruin it! I'm sure you'll look great, at the end of the day a bikini/tankini/swimsuit is a functional piece of clothing! In sure more people would be staring if you were fully dress at the pool and beach!!

millicent it does make sense in this shit body shaming world we live in...but that doesn't mean its right. You need the same dose of:

1.Put on Bikini

  1. Stop giving a shit what people think of your appearance

as everyone else!

We should all like our bodies...and we should never be ashamed to like them no matter what they look like, including the toned slim ones!
