We don't live in the UK, but everyone here wears a bikini regardless of size. You stand out more if you don't!

Honestly, no one really looks at anyone else on the beach or by the pool

CakeNinja · 05/08/2016 02:39

Well I haven't actually worn them yet!
The high waisted ones look gorgeous, but I'm just going to allow my belly the overhang. Nothing shameful about it - it's taken me too many holidays feeling flabby and frumpy, I must have been the only person on that beach the whole time in a bloody swim dress, And I was looking hard!!

CakeNinja · 05/08/2016 02:40

But yes, the high waisted would definitely hold me in better and sculpt me! Fuck though right?! Grin

GarlicMistake · 05/08/2016 02:55

I LOVE your attitude, Cake Star
And would be adopting it myself, if I were going anywhere warm enough to take my jumper off!

Go for it, Sammy. Even if you insist on being horrible to yourself in your head (would you talk to a friend like that??) - fat & stretch marks both look much prettier suntanned. And how do you get them suntanned?!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 05/08/2016 06:06

I went on holiday recently and as I'm feeling quite big I only took a tankini. There were plenty of people bigger than me wearing bikinis and they all looked fine.

pearlylum · 05/08/2016 06:10

Bugger what anyone thinks/

Someone sent this to me pn Facebook the other day:

" I spent one third of my life worrying what others think
The next third not caring what they thinl
THe last third realising they were not even thinking about me at all".

So true.

Eeyore86 · 05/08/2016 06:41

Go for it! I've just got back from a holiday and I wore a bikini and I'm currently the biggest I've been in years.

Did I feel a bit self conscious? Yeah I did but then I just kept thinking sod it, the only person I know here is DP and I'll never see any of these people again who cares what they think!
I did have moments where I felt fat especially compared to some gorgeous ladies also in the pool but it passes quickly, and frankly no one else cared! I have some beautiful cover ups as well (sarongs, dresses etc) which I felt amazing in when I put them on to walk on the beach etc

Do what makes you happy and enjoy your holiday!

You'll never see those people again, it doesn't matter one single bit what they think! I'm not the size I would like to be but when I go on holiday I'll be wearing a bikini for sure! I have a bikini top that is structured more like a bra so you could wear something like that.

I would avoid bandeau styles, personally think they look awful on everyone. Get something that will give your boobs a bit of support, and if you really feel the need then get a sarong to go over it

NotSayingImBatman · 05/08/2016 06:56

Normal, well adjusted people don't care what anyone else is wearing. Think about the last time you were at a swimming pool. Did you honestly think about what the other swimmers looked like in their swimwear?

Yes, there will be the odd and they will be very fucking odd in both senses of the word person that may have a fleeting negative thought. But who gives a shit? They would be the ones with an issue, not you.

froubylou · 05/08/2016 06:58

Wear what you want. But make sure it fits properly.

A size 8 or a size 18 looks awful if you are bursting out of it every where and that is the only thing I would judge.

I am a size 16 and happily wear bikinis.

CatNip2 · 05/08/2016 07:03

It's true, no one looks at anyone else on the beach they really don't, it's like at the swimming pool, you think everyone is going to point and laugh at your wobbles but 100% no one notices or cares.

On the other hand I am a 14 and not comfortable in a bikini, and those 40s ones, despite being intended to suit the curvaceous actually don't. The squashed fat has to go somewhere, personally I prefer a nicely cut Tankini in a vibrant colour that distracts from my fleshy thighs. Try Swimwear365 online, they have supportive swimwear.

Have a great holiday!

Roussette · 05/08/2016 07:07

I'm not small and I wear them always (and probably a lot older than you too). Go for it! I don't know where you are going on hols but I honestly think in the Med you draw more attention to yourself in tankinis or swim dresses because all shapes and sizes wear bikinis and you really don't see full swimsuits much because of the heat.

My top tips are - as others have said, forget bandeau type tops (they naturally drag the boobage down) and TBH I don't wear halter necks, if you have big boobs they don't half hurt your neck! Always go for structured underwired tops and rock the cleavage!

The latest fashion of big pants bikini bottoms do not suit everyone and TBH I don't wear them because they highlight what size I am. My friend wears them (sort of Betty Boop style like above but she's a size 10!) For me, far more flattering is high legs and medium sized bottoms, most flattering are the ones with the extra band around the top of the bikini bottom that you can roll up or down.

As others have said, wear beautiful cover ups if you want to really look the gorgeous sexy woman you are. They are so flattering - find something floaty, sequined and just go for it! Add a floppy sun hat and jewelled flip flops and others will be staring in admiration (as will your DH!)

If I can feel comfortable in a bikini, anyone can!

TheOddity · 05/08/2016 07:08

No need to find a flattering bikini. No one looks good in a bikini unless they are prepubescent or their body is advert perfect. So most people no. I live abroad, just had a baby so my tummy is a bag of wrinkles but I am wearing a bikini because it is by, my toddler and baby bath love swimming and although undoubtedly people look because they are nosey, they are only doing it due to their own inadequacies about their body image. Wear it, you won't be the fattest or oldest, And even if you were, non one gives a shiny shit. Better to be in a normal bikini than a sarong or cameo that just looks soooo English!!!

ChishandFips33 · 05/08/2016 07:10

I would go for it or at least take one with you. Smile

You do feel very different when you're out there with the sun blazing and you've looked around and realise you're not the biggest or wobbliest on the block.

Invest in a one with structure/bra like support it will make a big difference and aim for a colour that suits you not just black.

You'll look better with a bit of a tan so get as much of you as brown as possible.

If you wear a swimsuit, when you're home you'll just be 'highlighting' the bits you don't like because they'll still be white!

TowerRose · 05/08/2016 07:18

What matters is how you feel in it Smile Just make sure to try on lots of styles to see which you're more comfortable in. Also your DP sounds lovely

ChishandFips33 · 05/08/2016 07:22

This says it for me!

Am i too fat to wear a bikini?
PetraDelphiki · 05/08/2016 07:29

The only people in one piece costumes on our recent holiday were the Brits. The French, Russian, Greek, German, polish women of all sizes were in bikinis, looking fab and not caring what anyone thought!

Gymboree567 · 05/08/2016 07:43

Go for it, as long as you feel comfortable in it your confidence will show
I'm a 6/8, a dream figure apparently, wrong, my lower belly is covered in stretch marks, I wear a bikini but high waisted
I see larger ladies in a bikini and wish I looked like them
Everyone wants what they can't have! :/

Laiste · 05/08/2016 07:46

That link with all the plus size models in bikinis - it's great, but a bit disingenuous IMO. Each of were in 50's style bikinis; deep bottoms and proper big bra style tops showing about 2'' of flesh more than a generous one piece would. What on earth is the big, brave deal about that?I would have liked to have seen them wearing a 'normal' bikini in their own size and to hell with the wobbly bits, stretch marks and over hang.

Anyway ...

IMO and experience Not Giving A Shit What Anyone Else Thinks is an attitude you either just have (lucky you :)), or is an attitude that you've gradually gained over the years. I'm still working on mine (40s, 4 kids) but i'm getting there.

When you begin to achieve your NGASWAT you do look back and wish you'd worried less in the past. You regret the amount of time you spent angsting over your looks. You do start to look forward to wearing less in summer. You do look in the mirror at your bikini body and genuinely think ''it's just a body, it's mine and i'm alive. It's a short life, people will have better things to do than look at me.'' And it's all true.

There will always be people people watching. But they wont remember you after 10 seconds and why let that 10 seconds of a random stranger spoil your life?

Bahhhhhumbug · 05/08/2016 07:47

NO. You are not and I have scrolled straight down to comment without looking at any pics (if you've posted any) or reading what you weigh or what size you wear (if you have said). Also if you have a partner or husband who says you are, LTB. If you have any 'friends' who say you are ,ditch them immediately. HTHs Grin

Bahhhhhumbug · 05/08/2016 07:51

I was just having a nosey on here over breakfast and when I saw the title question of your OP I had to log on to comment. You are very honoured ,I don't interrupt my crispy bacon butty on white bread dripping in butter for anyone normally.

Upthetree100 · 05/08/2016 07:57

I think you should do what makes you happy OP. Personally, I wouldn't wear one if I was a size 18, because that would make me obese and I don't think it's healthy or something to be proud of so I wouldn't flaunt that.

I've always struggled with my weight currently at the high end, and although the vanity aspect I don't care couldn't give a shit about I FEEL unhealthy, noticing breathlessness climbing stairs, can play less sport I mean I even notice it when I'm trying to sleep, there's a change in the way I breathe. Fashion would be the last thing on my mind if I was a size 18

molyholy · 05/08/2016 07:58

Seriously, nobody else gives a flying fuck what others wear round the pool/on the beach. I seriously cannot think of a time when I have taken the time out ofy holiday to judge others on their body shape and what they are wearing. Go for it if your happy to, but if you're not going to be able to relax for fear of what others are thinking, wear a floaty top over the bikini.
