I feel very upset.

I found out this week that I'm graduating with a First, only just scraped one but its 70+ nethertheless.

I got really excited and posted it on my Facebook wall, and I've had really horrible comments such as "no one likes a show off", "getting a first won't make you better at your job", "I have got a 2:1, at least I had fun during my degree instead of spending my time with my nose in textbooks", "your employer won't care".

AIBU for just wanting a bit of recognition that I've done bloody well?!?!? My partner doesn't even know what it means, how do I explain it to him?

Feeling very woe is me. Sorry Confused

ailith bugger off man you're not impressing anyone with your snobbery and self importance.

ailith · 27/07/2016 19:54

I think given the language some - most? - of you use, you are the ones trying to be unpleasant to me, a relatively new poster. Niiiice.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 27/07/2016 19:55

I never heard of Russell Group universities until I left mine. It certainly wasn't something bandied about as a badge of honour.

I still get confused and end up telling people I went to a Russell Grant university. Grin

LoreleiGilmoreIsMyBFF · 27/07/2016 19:55

My first is from the OU & my ex took great pleasure in telling me it wasn't a 'real degree'. I couldn't give a fuck. I read bloody 'Middlemarch' from beginning to end and for that alone, I give myself a pat on the back! Delete these so-called 'friends' and huge congrats xxx

thisisafakename · 27/07/2016 19:56

People generally differentiate when they are looking for the right place at which to study. My university was founded in the 15th Century. Being there was a huge privilege

Lol, ailith, did you go to St Andrews to stalk Prince William or something? Am guessing it's one of the Scottish ones and that one was founded in the 15th century. Did you do history of art?

BARB060609 · 27/07/2016 19:57

Congratulations, ignore the jealous bastards x

Fomalhaut · 27/07/2016 19:58

ailith Institution is important. But there's not a 1:1 correlation between the rep of the uni as a whole and the rep of the course. Medicine at Oxford wasn't one of the higher rated degrees when I was at uni for example (they'd dropped the anatomy requirements quite a bit.) Conversely, some of the best degrees in things like aeronautical engineering etc are at unis which maybe don't fit that 'ancient red brick' profile.
And of course, plenty of courses at ancient red brick seats of learning aren't that great either. I refer you to certain subjects at a certain Scottish uni which is in a pleasant east coast seaside/golf coursey locale and is convenient for that fabulous chippy at Anstruther... Naming no names of course.
At postgrad level, the disconnect occurs again. You can have world famous groups at unis which aren't in the top ten or twenty. And having worked in that world I can tell you there are plenty of dead wood dons at prestigious institutions (although they're thinner on the ground these days with all the changes to tenure...) I did my PhD under a Nobel laureate. That's what mattered, not the fact it was Russel group and red brick.

Nursing is a well respected degree, which crucially is moderated and controlled by an outside body. A first in a nursing degree is something to be proud of.

thisisafakename:

Correct. Pedantry is fine.

I trust now - thanks to you - those who were of the opinion law was a vocational university subject have been convinced.

FaFoutis · 27/07/2016 19:59

High standards at the OU Lorelei, it is very difficult to get a first there.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 27/07/2016 19:59

Lol, ailith, did you go to St Andrews to stalk Prince William or something? Am guessing it's one of the Scottish ones and that one was founded in the 15th century.

Could be St Andrews, Glasgow or Aberdeen. Edinburgh was a more Johnny come lately.

Theimpossiblegirl · 27/07/2016 20:00

OP, you must have worked so incredibly hard. Very, very well done to you.

Ailith, maybe they should have taught you that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all at your top-founded-in-the-15th-century university.

leccybill · 27/07/2016 20:00

ailith
Perhaps this isn't the site for you then. Here, we mostly support each other with a bit of lighthearted ribbing if appropriate. We swear a bit too- we're all adults here.

ailith · 27/07/2016 20:01

Fomalhaut:
But Prince William went there and the chippy is great!
Thank you for your measured post. I take your point.

WaitrosePigeon · 27/07/2016 20:01

I still don't understand how some uni's are disrespected, though? University is university surely.:

WoahSlowDown · 27/07/2016 20:02

Are you allowed to call posters "trolls" on this site, just because their opinion does not chime with that of the majority

Well, If it walks like a duck and it talks like a duck..... 🤔

Cambridge dictionary definition of a troll

Here is part of the definition for you.
'someone who leaves an intentionally annoying message on the internet, in order to get attention or cause trouble'

thisisafakename · 27/07/2016 20:02

I trust now - thanks to you - those who were of the opinion law was a vocational university subject have been convinced

Oh no, are you a law grad too (snap)? Or is that the mildest hint of sarcasm? I wasn't really trying to convince anyone, it's just a common misunderstanding that you learn how to be a lawyer on a law degree. You barely even learn that on the actual vocational training.

DailyMaui · 27/07/2016 20:03

Oi Ailith

You didn't get a first did you? All that history and snobbery and fun... Yet you didn't get what you probably really, really wanted. And the OP did. Does that hurt? Because it seems to...

Well done OP that is fantastic. You should be really proud of yourself. 👏👏👏🍾🍾🍾👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉

hollinhurst84 · 27/07/2016 20:03

I have a BA Hons in equine management. I'm sure that will amuse ailith

NapoleonsNose · 27/07/2016 20:03

Well done OP, a First is a fantastic achievement. I know how hard I worked for mine so you deserve a bloody great pat on the back (and lots of fizzy Wine). Sod your so-called friends. Jealousy is a nasty trait - bet none them could do as well.

And employers ARE impressed by a First. My First, from an ex-Poly, impressed my Russell Group graduate boss as he could see that I'd achieved it as a mature student who juggled work, family and study so was a good candidate for the job he gave me.

Massive well done from me!

Scotmumof2girls · 27/07/2016 20:04

A massive congratulations for me and ignore he jealous idiots - well done X X

Scarydinosaurs · 27/07/2016 20:04

Although I would love to say- what pricks, you're brilliant, ignore them all. To have SO MANY nasty comments, I can't help but ask...exactly how did you phrase your announcement?? Was it a proper 'get people's backs up' kind of announcement??

laidbackneko · 27/07/2016 20:04

ailith why the mean spiritedness?

OP you rock! Congrats and have a Wine Star

winkywinkola · 27/07/2016 20:04

A first. That is really really impressive. You certainly shouldn't keep quiet about that, op.

I wish people would shout more about their achievements. Everywhere. It's not a bad thing. It's a cause for celebration.

It's not showing off either. But then I've never minded show offs when they've something great to show off about.

We need to applaud more. We need to say more about how great we've done. And our dcs.

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 27/07/2016 20:05

Congratulations OP! You're amazing and you deserve to celebrate it however you want, and everyone should be super proud of you!

ailith I don't understand why you're grinding your axe here? Whatever your views, it's really really unkind to the OP. I say that as someone with a first from an 'ancient and respected', or however you put it, university. Nursing degrees require an incredible amount of work whichever university you're at, and student nurses also effectively keep a lot of wards running by acting as unpaid HCAs.

thedishonthecoffeetable · 27/07/2016 20:05

Congratulations OP, well done on all your hard work, agree you should delete these so called friends who can't be happy for you.
