Ah-mund here. Never thought about it before. No idea how those around me pronounce it. Must pretend to have a blank about what is ameretti biscuits to flush them out Smile

Beeziekn33ze · 19/07/2016 20:46

OP Not worth being appalled about! Are you my SiL? He finds DD's pronounciation of L in both almond and walrus both hilarious.

bellie710 · 19/07/2016 20:47

It is meant to be pronounced amond as the l is silent like in Salmon or palm, however I always say almond! Where would anyone get armond there is no r??

April241 · 19/07/2016 20:48

Beeziekn33ze

Shock how else do you pronounce walrus? This is a great thread!!

Katedotness1963 · 19/07/2016 20:52

Ah-mund

AcrossthePond55 · 19/07/2016 20:53

I live very near 'almond country' in Calif, although I know that an 'American pronunciation' is probably worthless to most of you.

I say 'Ah-mnd'. The almond farmers pronounce it 'A-mnd' A as in acrobat. They are wrong. I am right Grin

LaContessaDiPlump · 19/07/2016 20:54

My mother screamed 'ARR-MOND' at me several times one afternoon when I erroneously asked for an al-mond. I spent the rest of the day deliberately requesting ARR-monds and pissing her right off my dad thought it was hilarious 'cos he's foreign and says it however the fuck he likes

It's been arr-monds ever since for me. DH is ambivalent Hmm

JackieAndHyde4eva · 19/07/2016 20:56

Well considering there is and L in it and there isnt an R in it YABU.

LokisUnderpants · 19/07/2016 20:57

Ah- mond here.

JackieAndHyde4eva · 19/07/2016 20:58

english is stupid

queenMab99 · 19/07/2016 20:58

Is it u and non-u like golf and gohf, Ralph and Rafe, the aristocracy versus the plebs?

Hassled · 19/07/2016 20:59

I have never heard anyone say "Ahmond". And I'm well old.

The test is how Alex Salmond pronounces his name. You've got almond and salmon in there. Does anyone know?

Careforadrink · 19/07/2016 20:59

The l is silent.

I've never heard of anyone pronouncing the l before. Tried it myself just now and ds burst out laughing.

It's Ahmund/armund

hazeyjane · 19/07/2016 21:00

No. Fucking. Way.

Its All - mond

Isn't it???

splendide · 19/07/2016 21:00

Ahmond, the L is silent. Do some of you pronounce the L in salmon or the G in gnat?

toadgirl · 19/07/2016 21:00

According to this site -

dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/almond

It sounds (to me) as if British English doesn't sound the "l" whereas American English does...I think!

EllyMayClampett · 19/07/2016 21:00

Apparently UK - no L, USA - L

dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/almond

e1y1 · 19/07/2016 21:01

eh?

its L not R

still, not as bad as people who add an R - barth, clarss, etc

MaisieDotes · 19/07/2016 21:01

across do you ever get them fresh?

Groovee · 19/07/2016 21:03

It's my friend's surname and she says Almond not Armond!

WingsToFly · 19/07/2016 21:03

Another mixed marriage here, I say ahmond, DH almond. Sounded strange at first but I restrained myself from correcting him (as obviously I say it the right way) and then just got used to it

TheRealAdaLovelace · 19/07/2016 21:04

but e!y! of course it is Barth and Clarse.....

Perhaps the L in almond is what linguists call a 'dark L' - a bit like the way Tony Blair used to pronounce 'milk' eg 'miwk'

hazeyjane · 19/07/2016 21:04

No, but I pronounce the 'l' in

Almanac
Alma mater
Alms houses
Almost
And The Almighty.

TheRealAdaLovelace · 19/07/2016 21:05

Grovee I have a friend with this surname as well......
I am sure she says it with the L
