OP posts:
LadyLayLay · 19/07/2016 20:07

I say armund as well

TheRealAdaLovelace · 19/07/2016 20:07

" If it was meant to sound armond there would be a r in the spelling. But there's not."
well by that logic, we should all be saying morTgage and Green-witch

MaisieDotes · 19/07/2016 20:08

They all look/ sound wrong now.

Word blindness Confused

maggiethemagpie · 19/07/2016 20:08

I say ol-mund

P1nkP0ppy · 19/07/2016 20:08

Almond, just like your DH 😃

EdmundCleverClogs · 19/07/2016 20:08

It's al-mond Confused. It's not difficult, how on earth is anyone pronuncing that with letters/sounds that are evidently not there??

redhat · 19/07/2016 20:08

I'm in the midlands and pronounce it with a soft l

so not al mund,

more arl mund with the l at the back of the mouth

ShatnersBassoon · 19/07/2016 20:08

I pronounce the L too.

I was brought up to say armond actually, but I felt it was wrong so I started saying it the other, correct, way,

branofthemist · 19/07/2016 20:09

If it was meant to sound armond there would be a r in the spelling. But there's not.

so why is there a 'g' in through?

Unfortunately the English language has lots of words were letters are silent. Or pronounced differently.

As pp has linked, the L is silent.

I would still says it ah-mond

CrazyDuchess · 19/07/2016 20:10

I'm an ol-mond, or all-mond

Leaspr · 19/07/2016 20:11

You have me sat in my living room saying "Almond" over and over! Haha! Al-Mond to me too! I think. The word has lost all meaning now!!! Confused

MaisieDotes · 19/07/2016 20:11

If it was meant to sound armond there would be a r in the spelling. But there's not.

Yes but I think that's a red herring in terms of this argument. Armond and ahmond are the same depending on whether one has a rhotic accent or not.

The issue is whether people pronounce the l.

KittensWithWeapons · 19/07/2016 20:12

I say aLmond. There's no r in almond. Where do you get the r from?

gillybeanz · 19/07/2016 20:13

It's Almond, otherwise it would be spelt armond or ahmond which I've never heard of.

SonicSpotlight · 19/07/2016 20:13

Oll-mund for me.

Some accents don't sound out the R in words and others do. World has no R sound in my accent. I think the people saying Ar - mond pronounce Ar and Ah the same.

Jacksterbear · 19/07/2016 20:14

re ar-mond vs ah-mond. Depending on your accent, those two could sound exactly the same. They would in mine (London) - we don't pronounce Rs in the middle of words! (Rhotic Rs iirc.)

Re almond - I grew up saying ah-mond but now say a little soft "l" - my suspicion is that the latter is an Americanism.

Jacksterbear · 19/07/2016 20:15

X-posted with a few people te the Rhotic thing!

MaisieDotes · 19/07/2016 20:15

Think of someone from the south of England saying "far" kittens

I would hear it as "fah" because in my accent (Irish) we say "faR".

People with a non-rhotic accent use an "ahh" sound for "ar".

BertieBotts · 19/07/2016 20:15

Al-mund. Midlands.

SkyLucy · 19/07/2016 20:17

Haha I've always said 'armond' and DH has always ribbed me for it! Sure it's a dialect thing - I'd never heard anyone pronounce the 'l' til I met him! He's Irish, my accent's a bit, um, Radio 4!

lovelybangers · 19/07/2016 20:17

Ol mond here.

Yorkshire

Scottishthreeberry16 · 19/07/2016 20:18

'Appalled'?

This is a joke, right?

MaisieDotes · 19/07/2016 20:18

Rhotic thing aside.

I don't pronounce the l. But I don't judge anyone who does Smile

Especially if they are bringing me an almond croissant.

IWTBTVB · 19/07/2016 20:20

I say almond with an l. After saying it lots of times it sounds a little bit more like ol-mund. I'm in the midlands.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/07/2016 20:21

Midlands here and it's almond to me. I've tried to say ah-mond but it's stupid.
