So not Irish, where are you from umbongo? Excellent username btw

TheRealAdaLovelace · 19/07/2016 21:31

not sure why people are getting 'hateful' and hot under the collar - there are many versions of English within these islands, and it is not really something to get upset about.
For me, obviously it is 'barth' but no, I do not spell it like that....Confused

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 19/07/2016 21:31

Who cares. Really?

TheWitchesofIzalith · 19/07/2016 21:33

Al-mund. I'm from Cardiff. I have never ever heard anyone say armond/ahmond, anywhere.
Either I'm very sheltered or I just don't talk about nuts much!
I'm not broad Cardiff though... I say barth, not bath and scon, not scone.
And 'on-velope' not envelope... no idea if that's right or not. Confused

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/07/2016 21:34

I care. Passionately. (Or maybe it's more than I'm just really HOT at the moment.)

One does not pronounced the 'l' in almond.

girlandboy · 19/07/2016 21:35

balm, palm, almond, calm

are all pronounced as barm, parm, armond, carm - I'm from Leicestershire. Salmon has a silent L as well.

Do all you L pronouncers say that it's a Pall-m tree? Or lip ball-m? Or a Sall-mon?

And my history teacher was called Mrs Almond - pronounced by her as Armond Grin

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/07/2016 21:35

Pronounce, obviously. My sweaty fingers slipped.

JackieAndHyde4eva · 19/07/2016 21:36

TheRealAdaLovelace · 19/07/2016 21:38

JackieAndHyde4eva · 19/07/2016 21:38

No no no yp dont! You dont pronounce an r do you?

TheRealAdaLovelace · 19/07/2016 21:40

oh right....like barrrrth...Grin no I do not, you are right...

KindDogsTail · 19/07/2016 21:43

I don't pronounce the L, and I say it as though it is aghm'nd or arm'nd
(I don't know what the spelling is as those both sound the same to me).

It seems lots of people say aLmond though from the answers so far.

RaspberryOverload · 19/07/2016 21:44

Midlands, and it's Ol-mnd.

I've not heard anyone say ar-mund round here.

JackieAndHyde4eva · 19/07/2016 21:45

oh right....like barrrrth...grin no I do not, you are right

I'm from Leicestershire too. And it's Balm, Palm, Almond, Calm But I'll give you Sammon Grin

splendide · 19/07/2016 21:49

So calm like cowl with an M on the end?

orangebird69 · 19/07/2016 21:50

Hopefully not too outing but my surname has 'alm' within it. And when I say my surname I pronounce the l. It's not an r. It's an l.

RaspberryOverload · 19/07/2016 21:50

calm as carlm, etc. Very common in my town

tabulahrasa · 19/07/2016 21:52

Ahmond, because it's a silent l and armond would sound like a pirate...

tallerlaura · 19/07/2016 21:52

TheWitches - I'm also in Cardiff (originally from the Valleys) and have NEVER heard Ahmond. I didn't even know it was a thing! Almond for me, with a short A. I pronounce the L in alms too, but not in calm or palm?

splendide · 19/07/2016 21:52

Oh I see yes like the name Carl but then an M. Thank you, I'm going to listen out for this. I find it all so interesting.

hazeyjane · 19/07/2016 21:53

I bet Marc Almond is an Alllllmond.

Dh is now mocking me because apparently I say 'owl mond' (east end vowels)

HolgerDanske · 19/07/2016 21:53

Like the poster above me said, the proper way to pronounce it is like the 'alm' in calm.
