Hiding from the smell. Bloody dh

TheCatAteMyHomework · 19/07/2016 11:29

So house guest decides to cook. Shows dh the recipe and is checking off ingredient list together. Recipe has ingredient on that dh knows I absolutely hate in food.
He obviously knows this as when I smell it and ask if it's got it in dh laughs and pretends it hasn't and house guest looks sheepish and says they were just following instructions.

Not only do I hate the taste of this stuff but it smells strong so now I am sitting in my room unable to go find something else.

Dh thinks that I'm rude no doubt.
Aibu to refuse it and sulk in my room? It's late here. I'm annoyed that he's let someone cook food I detest and I'll have to go find more food.

You're being over dramatic and are using your period as an excuse for it Hmm You were even being dramatic about it on this thread, getting cagey about what the ingredient is. Clove is in an awful lot of things that we wouldn't associate with the, admittedly horrible, clove flavour. They probably thought it wouldn't be as strong as it obviously turned out.

HarryPottersMagicWand · 19/07/2016 12:57

I've never even heard of clove. YANBU. There was no reason for him to not mention this to the guest who was cooking. Sounds like he was being an arse for no reason whatsoever.

I hate eggs. The smell makes me gag. I do scrambled for the DCs if I have to but hate doing it, then I can smell it for ages. I am sensitive to smells.

Posters here have been extremely rude to you OP (surprise surprise, people on MN think that they aren't smell sensitive so you should just get over it and you are a princess/childish etc etc, everyone is different thank fuck).

GabsAlot · 19/07/2016 12:57

my dh has raw onion it goes right through me no matter how many times tell him i cant be near raw onions it makes my eyes run and i haveto leave the room

still doesnt stop him but what can u do

i think your dh thinks its funny to wind u up andprob does it elsewhere doesnt he?

Thenightswatch · 19/07/2016 12:57

Am I the only one who has no idea what the hell clove is Blush

RepentAtLeisure · 19/07/2016 12:59

Cloves are what you stud oranges with at Christmas. (Or at least I think so...)

summerskittles91 · 19/07/2016 12:59

Funniest post on MN that i've read all day.

Roussette · 19/07/2016 12:59

I hate the smell of eggs. My DH loves loves loves eggs and eats them any which way. I just put up with it, I'm certainly not going to tell him he can't eat eggs.

Clove is a strong smell but I doubt there was more than one or two in the curry. You could have just said ... oh dear, there's clove in it, that's not for me, I'll stick a frozen pizza in the oven.

RepentAtLeisure · 19/07/2016 13:00

Coriander! (Tastes like soap)

Doggity · 19/07/2016 13:00

Your DH was being pathetic and you are also being a bit dramatic. That said, I do hate clove.

BertrandRussell · 19/07/2016 13:01

I've actually never heard anyone use "clove" in the singular. I suppose you might say "one clove"......

Doggity · 19/07/2016 13:04

Bertrand I'm glad you said that because I thought the same e.g. I made a curry with 5 cloves but everyone else said "clove", so I was a sheep and assumed they were all right.

george1020 · 19/07/2016 13:06

I hate clove with a passion! But you are being really childish and quite the madam, and just why would you flounce to another room in a fit of vapours?

Your poor guest is probably mortified while trying to put on a brace face. You really should apologise to your guest.

Your DH isn't much better tbh and very poor show to cook something you can't all eat (unless he knew you had a meal and was making something he normally wouldn't be able to eat as you wouldn't eat it)

I really can't imagine why you wouldn't sort whatever issues you both seem to have in private and put on a United front for guests!

TheUnsullied · 19/07/2016 13:09

Hmm. I usually say cloves too actually. I don't think saying the singular is wrong though when we're talking flavour.

gustofwind · 19/07/2016 13:12

I'd be pissed OP.

Just mean. Mean to cook something you'd hate when your DH knows you hate it...

Cake Chocolate don't offer anyone any of it!! Angry

LoreleiGilmoreIsMyBFF · 19/07/2016 13:13

Am I the only one who has never eaten/smelled clove? Must start cooking meals myself, rather than relying on Captain Birdseye.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/07/2016 13:14

I think your DH was rotten. He knew you hate cloves, cloves were not essential to the dish, yet he allowed them to be put into it it. With spices, they pervade the whole dish so you can't just pick them out. So even if the cloves are removed, the taste will remain,

I utterly detest caraway, if someone gave me a dish with caraway in I really couldn't eat it. I struggle to stay in the same room as someone drinking cammomile tea and the smell makes me feel sick.

camaleon · 19/07/2016 13:14

Wow... it must be a pleasure to be your guest

elodie2000 · 19/07/2016 13:16

Clove is the tree.
Cloves are it's aromatic flower buds.

Either ok to say I think!

TheCatAteMyHomework · 19/07/2016 13:17

I have apologised to them.
We look like idiots. That's never nice.

I once sent a meal back in a restaurant for tasting of cinnamon. They said it doesn't and told me I was imagining it. I wasn't.

If you've eaten curries you have probably eaten cloves.

Pestilence13610 · 19/07/2016 13:22

Durian?
If so I can understand

LoreleiGilmoreIsMyBFF · 19/07/2016 13:24

BertrandRussell. I love curries (esp. Captain Birdseye...). How bad can this stuff be?

BertrandRussell · 19/07/2016 13:25

It's just a spice. Much drama is being created.

BertrandRussell · 19/07/2016 13:32

If you ever use garam masala it's got cloves in it.

RaspberryOverload · 19/07/2016 13:33

It's not just a spice.

If there's something that a person can't abide the smell of, then just a tiny amount can cause that person to feel sick or even hurl.

I've seen this with my friend's DH and his reaction to prawns.

I think that while the OP could have displayed a little better behaviour, her DH was far worse. Her DH and the guest went through the ingredient list before starting to cook. They could have left it out, but no.

And add in the smirking (and lying, actually, he lied and said there wasn't any) and the DH sounds like a dick.

And it also appears that the OP's DCs will not likely be eating it if they don't like spicy food, so that's a waste of food there.

OP, I hope your DH has the decency to make some food that your DCs can eat. Because if he's expecting you to, that's definitely not on.
