To think boys should be able to do Brownies?

I'm a bit confused why they don't? Girls are allowed to do Scouts/Cubs/Beavers, so why can't boys do brownies?

OP posts:

Girls should be allowed their space.

Boys should be allowed their space

There were no girls in scouts when I was little. Girls went to brownies and the boys went to Cubs/scouts.

That's the way it Should be.

mzS1990 · 16/07/2016 00:03

Let's be honest- girls are only allowed to join Cubs /scouts as if they don't the sexism card would be pulled out.

Maybe makes should use that card more often.

Yawn. RTFT, mzS.

Declining numbers, policy decision, first steps made back in the 70s yada yada.

mzS1990 · 16/07/2016 00:10

No idea what rtft or whatever you said means

OutDamnedWind · 16/07/2016 00:11

Read the fudging thread. You might find it useful.

mzS1990 · 16/07/2016 00:12

I did read it.....

PerspicaciaTick · 16/07/2016 00:13

People
a) have some funny ideas about what Brownies is like
b) have some funny ideas about what Beavers is like
c) forget that there is a not insignificant number of girls whose parents would stop them attending a mixed social group.
d) look at all the places and choices that are open to boys and still think that the girls should just budge up and make room for boys in one of the few places where "what boys want" is not an issue.

Graceymac · 16/07/2016 00:13

Umm no, brownies for girls, Scouts for boys, what is wrong with that?

OutDamnedWind · 16/07/2016 00:17

Gracey Nothing except that 25 years ago the Scouts decided to become co-ed. Guides decided, and have repeatedly decided since, not to.

Girls first joined scouts as ventures in 1976, a whole 40 years ago.

But some like to claim it's over the top feminists playing the sexism card, which is a relatively new accusation.

WankersHacksandThieves · 16/07/2016 00:19

I think the point is that all those places that are "open to boys" are also "open to girls".

Graceymac · 16/07/2016 00:19

Ok, I don't live in UK and my girls are perfectly happy being in the Brownies without boys at the age they are at. Not too keen on boys at this stage!

Permanentlyexhausted · 16/07/2016 00:20

When it suits this thread, Rainbows and Beavers are equivalent, and OPs son can get everything that he could get from Rainbows (if allowed) form Beavers.

Then when it suits they're TOTALLY different and separate and can't be compared.

I can only assume you're being disingenuous since no one could really have read this thread and not see the idiocy of this statement.

They are totally separate organisations, albeit with close links, offering separate programmes that have some similar goals. The leadership and governance at the top is separate. They make their own rules. That's why one of these organisations has chosen to remove any reference to God from it's promise and the other hasn't had to follow suit. It really isn't hard to understand.

Permanentlyexhausted · 16/07/2016 00:26

No, girls are only allowed to join Scouting because back in the 80s they were hemorrhaging members, saw that the Guide Association was hugely popular, and thought "We'll have some of that".

WankersHacksandThieves · 16/07/2016 00:31

Not too keen on boys at this stage!

Whereas 6/7/8/9 year old boys are really keen on girls?

KittensandKnitting · 16/07/2016 00:32

Quite right permanetly two DC aged 9 here

DS no waiting list for Cubs
DD waited a year for brownies

mzS1990 · 16/07/2016 00:40

I bet if enough mums of boys kicked up a fuss, they would get their lads into brownies WinkWinkWink

OutDamnedWind · 16/07/2016 00:45

Probably not. Guiding is going from strength to strength at the moment, has a royal charter and has been girls only for over a hundred years.

If you are saying by having a vagina girls should be treated differently then that is the same for everything in life and business. It cuts both ways

People are treated differently on account of cocks and vags on a daily basis. Toilets, for instance. And maternity leave. and maternity wards. I could go on.

To equate golf clubs with Brownies just won't do. There are many children's groups that boys can join as boys only and mixed. The point of this thread is that a girls-only group needs to stay that way.

BertrandRussell · 16/07/2016 07:44

Scouts and Guides both considered the option of becoming mixed. Scouts chose to because of massively declining numbers, and have gone from strength to strength since. Guides chose not to because a) they did not need to and more importantly, b) because around the world there are many girls who would not be allowed to attend a mixed sex group. Nothing to do with feminism or political correctness gone mad or discriminating against boys.

It is Girlguiding's decision to remain for girls only, and to be honest, I'm fully supportive of this.

SoupDragon · 16/07/2016 08:02

There are many children's groups that boys can join as boys only

Are there?
