Are taller women more generally greater revered?

I note that Sam Cam is a tall woman, as is Michelle Obama. Obviously most super models are tall and it seems to be something of a pre-requisite to attain model status but what about the shorties?

I can see why it's an issue for men and some even go so far as to wear those insole heightening things but have taller women always been the ideal?
On MN people tend to describe their dcs as 'towering' over them and incredibly tall for their age etc but really?

i am a tall woman
it has been of absolutely NO advantage to me over the years
quite the reverse in fact

hard to buy clothes, men find you less attractive, you feel elephantine next to average sized people, fugly shoes etc etc

60sname · 13/07/2016 17:24

My sister is 5' 10" in her socks (waves at DSis) and if anything I would say it's been a hindrance to her as some clearly inadequate men don't want a partner who is close in height or taller than them

RedHareWithBlondeHair · 13/07/2016 17:25

middle thanks for the biscuit! Grin, as if Kylie Minogue is any sort of aspiration than a dodgy singer with dodgy taste in men and music! Hilarious! I'd rather be 20 feet tall than be her!

But supermodels are? Hmm

user12785 · 13/07/2016 17:26

Oh yes, 6ft tall here and people revere me wherever I go, I do wish they'd stop Grin

StrawberryQuik · 13/07/2016 17:27

I would have thought it went the other way, with people wanting to 'protect' the small, dainty women?

Careforadrink · 13/07/2016 17:28

Personally I think it's the reverse. In my experience most men for example prefer smaller women for example.

Shallow either way I suppose.

fadingfast · 13/07/2016 17:28

I agree with theroot. I've felt like a freak for much of my teenage and adult life and buying clothes is a nightmare. Most high street clothes make me look as though I've grown out them and I can never wear anything remotely 'girly'.

user12785 · 13/07/2016 17:29

Root, the only thing I identify with on your list is "hard to buy clothes". But when ankle grazer trousers and 3/4 length sleeves are in fashion, it's much easier.

oldlaundbooth · 13/07/2016 17:30

I've worked with a couple of very tall women (who, interestingly, were in management positions) and they both definitely had presence due to their height.

You couldn't miss them when they walked into a room.

Acornantics · 13/07/2016 17:32

5ft 11 here and never had a sense of being revered. Stared at, ridiculed, scoffed at by blokes who seemingly were threatened by tallness, yes, but not revered. Well, apart from my family and friends who helped me through the awkward years and awesome DH who's a teeny bit shorter than me and embraces my height and always has done 😁.

Possibilityofanisland · 13/07/2016 17:32

My sister is 5ft 11" and she had a horrible time growing up because she was taller.
She was bullied and made fun of for years Sad
It's has affected her whole life and she now walks with a stoop as she tries to blend in.

She is, of course, beautiful but she can't see this as she lies outside of the norm.

RedHareWithBlondeHair · 13/07/2016 17:32

If the otherwise is preferred then why are so many prominent women tall. I can see why in day to day life it's difficult - I'm a 6 footer myself and tbh finding clothes was always like finding a needle in a haystack but why therefore are so many prominent women tall? Not that they all mind you, but comparatively speaking.

OP posts:
purplevase4 · 13/07/2016 17:33

I am not tall But I think taller people carry more gravitas and life is easier for them.

And I'm sure there are as many women who don't want to go out with a man shorter than them as there are men who don't want to go out with a woman taller than they are.

Having a go at short people is still acceptable.

almondpudding · 13/07/2016 17:35

I don't think there are that many prominent women who are tall.

Yes, catwalk models are generally tall, but actresses are generally short.

You're cherry picking OP.

talllikejerryhall · 13/07/2016 17:35

I'm 6'1 but grew with tall family so didn't really notice how tall I was until teenage, and by that point, too late to learn to slouch.

A few awkward years not being able to find clothes that looked nice, but then top shop came out with top shop tall, and I haven't looked back.

Have to keep an eye on my weight - it's a fine line between tall and 'big'.

Alwayschanging1 · 13/07/2016 17:37

For me it is always the shoes - I dream of wearing high heels and platforms!
If I did I would be approaching 6'4" which is not pleasant.
So I shuffle around in boring flats, always looking for a shoe which is pretty but low heeled - and there aren't many.
I once bought some heels just to wear round the house for fun. Blush
I feel big and clumsy and not very feminine.
The only up side is that I have really healthy feet - no bunions or wonky toes.

Alwayschanging1 · 13/07/2016 17:38

talllikejerryhall - I agree with the weight comment. If you are overweight AND tall you just look massive. You can actually scare people.

But Brianne of Tarth is my fave character - love her!

RedHareWithBlondeHair · 13/07/2016 17:39

I find that too talllike, the taller you are the 'bigger' you appear to be wrt weight. It's a struggle.

almond cherry picking yes, but only because it's a deviation from the norm. Super models are not 5'2 and women leaders aren't either.

hollyisalovelyname · 13/07/2016 17:40

Yes they are more revered. Sad

RedHareWithBlondeHair · 13/07/2016 17:40

always move to Holland! Grin, I'm half Dutch and whenever I go over there I feel at home!

OP posts:
rainbrella · 13/07/2016 17:41

have to say ive never noticed any benefit to my height, was always the tallest at school and felt self conscious and like i stuck out! i also have to watch my weight as start to look bulky/unfeminine if i go over a particular weight.

more prominent/famous tall people? depends on what area they work in or reason why they're a public figure.

SleepyRoo · 13/07/2016 17:41

Supermodels are tall because the clothes hang more photogenically . So goes the thinking, anyway

Alwayschanging1 · 13/07/2016 17:41

I dance with a 6'6" Norwegian once - it was amazing. I felt so tiny!
