I can't believe I have admitted I actually watch that show Grin But yes, I do

So is it just me? Jamelia is utterly annoying!

I know the purpose behind the show is to have panelists with different view points so that there can be a spirited debate.

But must she ALWAYS have a totally random opinion that is completely contrary to everyone else? It's absolutely fine to disagree, but her disagreement rarely makes sense and she always gets needlessly agitated while making her point.

She also has a tendency to be on a high horse and take the most uppity and moral stance possible.

I'm thinking of this one occasion she was so judgemental of women in the sex trade and another occasion where she had some odd opinions on teenagers being able to access birth control.

And believe me, I dislike Nigel Farage, but when he came on the show, he seemed like the sensible one in front of her. It wasn't I disagreed with her points, she was just so tangential while making it!!

No one on this thread has been racist.

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2016 17:44

Wallis I said it wasn't (and still isn't) a 'black lady hunt'. What do you mean? Confused Did you mean to quote TeaAddict?

WallisSimpson11 · 13/07/2016 17:45

Muzzcub Who said anyone was racist on this thread?

WallisSimpson11 · 13/07/2016 17:47

Sparklingbrook- I can't possibly comment.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 13/07/2016 17:48

I had no idea uppity had those connotations. Its not a word I use thankfully Blush

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2016 17:54

I have no idea what you are on about Wallis. Sorry. Confused

RaskolnikovsGarret · 13/07/2016 18:11

I must say I think LW is the most appalling programme on TV, and a disgrace to women everywhere. All the panellists seem equally awful.

I am not black, but did wonder for a moment why the only black member has been mentioned, since they all appear equally ignorant. I don't think anyone on this thread consciously dislikes Jamelia because she is black. But subconsciously? Maybe.
It made me think.

SoleBizzz · 13/07/2016 18:13

Why because ww are all White on Mumsnet or Asian therefore we are racist? What's that say about YOU?????

pilates · 13/07/2016 18:31

RaskolnikovsGarret your second paragraph is deeply offensive.

JanetStWalker · 13/07/2016 18:40

I don't understand why some people are so desperately trying to read more into it? It's actually horrendously offensive to insinuate that people are closet racists just because they find ONE woman, who happens to be black, deeply irritating. It's also reductive, is Jamelia's skin colour her defining quality?

BillSykesDog · 13/07/2016 18:52

I don't think anyone on this thread consciously dislikes Jamelia because she is black. But subconsciously? Maybe.
It made me think.

Eh? Why do I like Alesha Dixon and June Sarpong then? Is my subconscious slightly defective or is it just because they're quite good at being on the telly?

quail · 13/07/2016 18:56

Why is it offensive to question whether the representation of different ethnicities in our racist media has made us subconsciously judgemental? Just as the representation of women in our sexist media makes us subconsciously more judgemental of women, and lists of the most hated celebrities are always women-heavy, whether it's women they're asking or men? The example I used earlier, on Celebrity Big Brother, people were actually saying they felt unsafe when Tiffany was in the house - I don't know if you saw Tiffany but she was a sweet woman, and grown ass men were saying they were afraid of her being in the same house as them. Does that have nothing to do with the stereotype of the angry black woman? When we tell men that the culture is sexist, we don't want them to be angry and say 'what are you talking about, I'm not sexist?', we just want them to listen and consider the ways in which the culture makes it harder for women to 'get it right'. So maybe when someone of colour posts that it feels like individual threads discussing black women have in the past veered into something that can feel like racism, the right response maybe isn't to be angry about having been called a racist, but just to listen and be aware that as a culture we might have different expectations about different groups. I'm not saying any of this applies to any individual analysis of Jamelia on this thread. I'm saying that it isn't something to be hurt about or feel angry about, just as non-sexist men don't need to feel angry if we point to sexism in the culture.
I hate Theresa May and when I insult Theresa May in the future I will ask myself if I'm being angry with her because she's a woman, if the insults I'm choosing are gendered, and I'll wonder if the treatment she receives from the media is fair or gendered. There is still sexism and there is still racism and it's something we should be thinking about.

No, Quail is spot-on.

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2016 19:18

I agree MrsDV.

Muzzcub · 13/07/2016 19:19

Quail why do you hate Theresa May?

seahorse106 · 13/07/2016 19:22

She was so annoying on that Bear Grylls thing she was on. I've hated her ever since!

JanetStWalker · 13/07/2016 19:23

Seek and ye shall find, quail.

I'm not into mind reading personally, much prefer to save up my 'isms' for real life, genuine examples but each to their own and all that.

areyoubeingserviced · 13/07/2016 19:25

Agree with you Quai-

areyoubeingserviced · 13/07/2016 19:31

Quai is not saying that posters are racist.
She is saying that we should examine whether we are more critical of black women -subconsciously .
I can understand why posters may find Jamelia irritating , but do we find her more irritating because she is black?'Quail is just asking us to examine our motives

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2016 19:33

I find Jamelia irritating because she is irritating. Same as Amanda Holden who is equally so.

quail · 13/07/2016 19:35

I hate Theresa May because of her Go Home vans that made some children who were born in this country ask their teachers if they were going to be deported. I hate that she voted against the repeal of section 28. There are lots of reasons that are more connected to her being a Tory, I guess. And I bet there are sexist reasons I hate her. I have definitely criticised her clothes, but I've also criticised a lot of male politicians' outfits, so who knows how far my hatred of Theresa May is affected by my misogyny.

I don't think I'm trying to belittle any conversations about celebrities. I've outed myself as a massive Celeb BB fan, I like the same stuff as everyone else. I thought this part of the board was called Am I Being Unreasonable, and I haven't argued with any individual opinion about Jamelia, only with arguments that said it's wrong to mention race when talking about Jamelia.

quail · 13/07/2016 19:37

For the record, I thought Jamelia was really sweet and hard-working on Strictly and there are other Loose Women I like less.

Allofaflumble · 13/07/2016 19:37

I've not seen Jamelia on LW as I got bored with it years ago.

Around the time of Superstar (which I loved), she was on that pop programme hosted by Mark Lamarr (forget what it was called) a couple of times and she was great fun and fitted in really well.

Plus as someone said, she had some really good songs.

JanetStWalker · 13/07/2016 19:41

I can understand why posters may find Jamelia irritating , but do we find her more irritating because she is black?'Quail is just asking us to examine our motives

Quail needs to grasp the possibility that there might be no motives at all, apart from her being an irritating bint - Jamelia that is not Quail.
