AIBU?

AIBU to find Loose Women panelist Jamelia extremely irritating?

I can't believe I have admitted I actually watch that show Grin But yes, I do

So is it just me? Jamelia is utterly annoying!

I know the purpose behind the show is to have panelists with different view points so that there can be a spirited debate.

But must she ALWAYS have a totally random opinion that is completely contrary to everyone else? It's absolutely fine to disagree, but her disagreement rarely makes sense and she always gets needlessly agitated while making her point.

She also has a tendency to be on a high horse and take the most uppity and moral stance possible.

I'm thinking of this one occasion she was so judgemental of women in the sex trade and another occasion where she had some odd opinions on teenagers being able to access birth control.

And believe me, I dislike Nigel Farage, but when he came on the show, he seemed like the sensible one in front of her. It wasn't I disagreed with her points, she was just so tangential while making it!!

Rant over Wink

YA definitely NBU.

She's an absolute tit, a horrid combination of ignorance and arrogance - see her comments on over weight people and breastfeeding being compulsory. The things that most grates is the CONSTANT 'mmms' and 'yeahs' when one of the other women is expressing her opinion - it's like she's just killing time until she can speak again rather than listening to what is actually being said. Proper boils my piss.

Ayda is married to Robbie Williams you know, she doesn't like to mention it Wink

Jamelia is an unpleasant individual and her skin colour has bog all to do with it.

She's ignorant and I cringe when she shares her 'wisdom', especially as she's so woefully misinformed on most things.

I was on the Serena thread (and reported the shit out of it - it was disgusting, but mostly on the OP's part) and have also been on the recent one about the Dallas shootings (which also carried racist undertones from a certain poster - I challenged that too). To call Jamelia unpleasant is not racist. To say she'a unpleasant because she's black would be racist. But that's not what people are saying because her skin colour has nothing to do with it.

FWIW I think Loose Women is a terrible programme, which gives the impression that 'that's what women are like'. Those women do not represent me or anyone I know.

I don't think it's crazy of TeaAddict to be conscious of the dangers of talking about women of colour in a derogatory way. First of all, women of colour are often held to a different standard from white women, and assumptions are made about them based on racist attitudes that are built so deeply into our culture that they're invisible. So for instance, Diane Abbott seems to be the most hated politician, one that everyone can make jokes about, Jess Phillips can say fuck off to and EVERYONE laughs, even Adil Ray made a joke about her on Have I Got News For You, as if she is sort of disgusting, a lot of the jokes about Jeremy Corbyn are based on her being the most appalling person imaginable, and I'm sure this comes from the fact that she is a black woman with opinions - and possibly because she is a plus-sized black woman with opinions - and I don't see this happening to white women. Often on Big Brother it's the black female contestants who are seen as being 'aggressive', I've seen two series in which the ENTIRE HOUSE deems a black female character to be 'scary' - and no doubt this has something to do with the stereotype of the 'angry black woman' - please look this up if you aren't familiar with it. It is problematic when people say 'I don't care about race, I don't see race'. Because it's sort of not up to people who have white privilege to decide whether race is an issue because we're not seeing the racism people of colour see, we certainly don't see it all. For instance, Jamelia recently reported a racist incident that occurred when she was with her daughter and a policeman started shouting at her.

I'm not saying any of the comments on this thread are racist. We are all allowed to like who we like. But I think it's good to be aware that black women are often treated differently because they are black, expected to be a certain way because they are black, automatically reacted to for that reason. So it would not be my choice to single out Jamelia as the most annoying person on Loose Women, nor to start a thread about it, just in case I was somehow being racist in ways I didn't fully see. Just like if I were Jess Phillips it wouldn't be my choice to boast about having told Diane Abbott to fuck off and no one else in the shadow cabinet. I think it's really good that we have an awareness of these subtle, invisible stereotypes and are really careful when singling women of colour out for criticism.

the OP refers to a black woman as 'uppity'

it's clearly not a race issue

OP, obviously its fine to not like her, but using 'uppity' to describe a black person has horrible connotations you might not be aware of.

Oh, bollocks. By that standard we shouldn't talk about Oscar Pistorious because he's a man with disabilities.

It's basic stuff. Talk about the behaviour, not the way they look. I also object to people slamming the way Cheryl Cole (I can'tell remember her surname now) looks. The ageism against Madonna. The body-shaming of plus-sized models.

We're discussing Jamelia's personality. To say we shouldn't do that in case someone is racist is wrong. If someone was racist they'd get a new one ripped for them and rightly so.

Jamelia was awful on Bear Grylls The Island, she was afraid of everything, cried all the time and fell out with everyone, even though they all took turns carrying her backpack.
Poor Laurence Fox was ill and hallucinating with a fever but she had a huge strop at him anyway.

Bear sent her home.

I'm genuinely sorry but I don't know why "uppity" is racist?

I thought it meant "irritating" it could be complete ignorance on my part

If the word is derogatory in any way, I apologise that was never my intention.

I'm a woman of colour myself, I wouldn't ever speak of someone badly because of the colour of their skin

Quail- I totally understand where you are coming from. As I said in my earlier post I am the first to jump on any posts which have racist undertones .
There is no denying that racism against black women is prevalent in British society.
I saw BB this year when the black female contestant was deemed to be aggressive , despite the fact that she was being abused by a young white male.
It could be that posters are subconsciously more critical of Jamelia because she is a black woman. However, it would be wrong for posters not to 'feel free' to criticise Jamelia just because she is a black female.

I love a bit of daytime shite as much as the next person but I don't know how anyone can watch Loose a Women. They are a disgrace to womanhood.

It's just so vaccuous. "oooh let's talk about boob size and how many marriages we've had between us while the men talk about politics on BBC2"
