A bloke in the street said 'cheer up love, give us a smile' and I did. Urgh!!!

And now I'm pissed off with myself. I didn't feel like smiling, I don't think I should have to smile because some random male said I should. I just instantly did as I was told before my brain even engaged. Then he said 'ahh, that's much better baby face' AngryAngryAngry I always do this or look embarrassed and scuttle by with my head down when blokes say stuff like this in the street even though I would call myself a feminist. (I'm not great at putting my feminist beliefs into action).

What do other women do? Withering look, sharp comment or just ignore.
Is it unreasonable for something like this to get to me that much?

I suffer from depression. When I'm at my lowest ebb the last person I'm going to open up to is the twat on the checkout who told me to cheer up. Honestly...

Helmetbymidnight · 11/07/2016 16:08

All women should smile and be pretty at all times - fact.

TroysMammy · 11/07/2016 16:09

I've always give a big fake smile. Makes me realise I must look miserable when I have nothing to be miserable about. I do sometimes mutter "twat" when I'm out of earshot.

To be fair to MrsS1990, if someone says 'cheer up' in a friendly way with a concerned smile it might get a better response. Also if it's someone you know then there's a familiarity there.

TheRealPosieParker · 11/07/2016 16:10

I don't think that you have to have an unhappy face for people to say it. In one day, and I was about 39 with my kids on each occasion, I had "smile love it may never happen" to which I replied "on the contrary you just did", then two builder types call me "fit as fuck" to which I mouthed "fuck off" (they were literally walking toward me and a metre in front), a fifty year old bloke sing "ahhhh beautiful lady" and another group call me a MILF walking with my pre teen.....

None of this was anything to do with what I was doing, wearing or acting. It was only to do with entitled twats who thought they would force me to interact.

Idiotxit · 11/07/2016 16:13

What if a woman does it though? I know that it's usually blokes, but I have heard it from women as well.

If a friendly woman said 'cheer up love! Give us a smile!' would some of you actually yell 'fuck off'?

It's an odd one. I'm a feminist and would completely ignore anything like this, as in I would pointedly blank a man saying it. But I'm also really polite, so yelling fuck off is unlikely for me.

But if a woman said it, I'd probably give a rueful grin or something. I dunno. I'm undecided.

The last time someone said "cheer up, it might never happen" to me it was just after one if my friends died. Funny enough it didn't make me want to cheer up. Apparently "getting some dick" would have made her less dead though. Hmm

YoJesse · 11/07/2016 16:14

Urgh 1990 really?? Yeah that's my Problem, I need some dick (really struggling to believe you're a woman)

Oh and I'm female, and while I've never said it to a complete stranger, I have said 'cheer up' to a miserable looking colleague or someone I know a little like a customer ...

Snigger.... nothing makes me a good customer like being told to cheer up.... Fuck's sake. If a business said this to me I'd take my business elsewhere.

Xenophile · 11/07/2016 16:15

Awww Mrs, I'm as happy as a pig in shit and no doubt get better 'dick' than you, because I'm not a complete shithead.

HTH.

TheRealPosieParker · 11/07/2016 16:15

If a woman said it I'd probably give a very unpleasant confused WTAF look.

BrickInTheWall · 11/07/2016 16:15

I hate this too.

I always tell them my Dad/Sister/Husband etc has died that morning. Take your pick.

Im sure it makes them feel really shit for commenting and hope it would make them think twice about saying it to anyone else.

PurpleDaisies · 11/07/2016 16:15

I wouldn't yell fuck off at a man. I would still glare at a woman who said it, or tell them straight that they didn't know anything about what was going on in my life so to mind their own business.

tralaaa · 11/07/2016 16:16

I would smile and laugh and probably say there you go

TheRealPosieParker · 11/07/2016 16:16

I'm wondering if penises have some sort of magic happy beans, women are always told they need some.

Helmetbymidnight · 11/07/2016 16:18

I would react in the same way to a strangewomen - don't tell me how I should Look.

Go get some dick? wtf is the matter with you?

LilacSpunkMonkey · 11/07/2016 16:19

Go get some dick - we don't need to, you're already here!

TheRealPosieParker · 11/07/2016 16:24

Grin Wine

Southernc0mfortmirror · 11/07/2016 16:25

May I suggest this as a reaction the next time it happens

(Really hope the gif works!)

Grin
Helmetbymidnight · 11/07/2016 16:25

I like that one!

hareinthemoon · 11/07/2016 16:27

Being told to smile has never made me smile happily. The idea of happy penis beans has though.

Felyne · 11/07/2016 16:27

Alright Mrs I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but seems I cross posted with your charming (not) 'get some dick' comment. Maybe I'll try that line on the next person to tell me to cheer up.
