Adults on scooters

I keep seeing grown adults using scooters to get around.

AIBU thinking they all look like complete knobs?

I can't wait for DS2 to be able to control his scooter and then I'm going to get one too. It looks like fun - like roller skating or bike riding. I can see how it would be annoying if people ride them on the pavement but if you're sensible then why on earth not I say.

DerelictMyBalls · 05/07/2016 18:35

As long as they ride them on the road, I don't have a problem with them. Pavements are for pedestrians.

Ghodavies · 05/07/2016 18:50

Ifailed - I dare say that a teenager on a scooter on the road at 10mph will probably be hurt when hit by a full size car?

AllTheFluffyAnimals · 05/07/2016 18:56

I love my scooter :-) it just goes with my tattoos, coloured hair and old fashioned clothes as something mumsnet has deemed me to be doing to impress others when all it does is impress me because I like it. And if your first thought when deciding what to wear/look like/do is what other people will think you are missing out on life.

ittooshallpass · 05/07/2016 19:05

I have a scooter so I can keep up with DD. Far better that I whiz along beside her than run... and wobble behind her... lol...

I've got this one. It's honestly changed my life. My kids will go anywhere with me now without complaint because it's easy and FUN and I am not constantly yelling at them to slow down. We go all over West London on them. I suppose onlookers probably do judge if this thread is anything to go by but I don't care, my life is easier and better with one every single day and I actually feel sorry for people who put so many restrictions on How Things Should Be and sneer at other people who are just getting on with things; so mean spirited.

I don't see anything wrong with it, there's a boy with his nanna who I sometimes see out on them, they look as if they are having a good time. I would like a hover board but my DD said I am just not cool enough to pull it off!

FreeFromHarm · 05/07/2016 21:00

I love my 'adult scooter' and equally enjoy being a knob 😎 Great fun , should give t a try

FreeFromHarm · 05/07/2016 21:08

Snap Nicki, brill aren't they 😊... So many people say to me when I am out with my dd that it looks like fun and where did we get them ... Life's to short, survived cancer , it's great to be alive, give it ago

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 05/07/2016 21:22

I got DH one for his 60th birthday, he scoots everywhere and is obviously very cool and trendy.

MissElizaBennettsBookmark · 05/07/2016 21:47

Cuppatoffee ^^ Grin

I do like to ride along on my shopping trolley in the supermarket though...

justwondering72 · 05/07/2016 22:15

We're in France... It's completely normal for adults to use scooters here. Why not? It's a much faster way of getting from a to b.

camelfinger · 05/07/2016 22:22

I don't have one but do look on enviously as adults on scooters glide effortlessly past women in impractical heels in their way to the station in the morning.

riceuten · 05/07/2016 22:23

No, YANBU. Anyone over 10 riding these things needs to go and have a long hard look at themselves.

And people who hurtle down the pavement on them

And children who ride around in shops or rstaurants on one

And people who pull their children along on one.

I'll stop before I explode

throwingpebbles · 05/07/2016 22:39

Why rice ??? Why are they conceptually any different from a bike? We don't think it is strange for grown ups to ride bikes do we?

ItWasNeverASkirt · 05/07/2016 22:48

Yes, I look like a knob when I take my little one to nursery, but we get there quickly and safely and have a bit of exercise racing each other.

I am even fat too so probably even more ridiculous. But it's great.

Like any other mode of transport, you can be considerate and safe... or not. This seems to be more about the user than the mode of transport though.

ItWasNeverASkirt · 05/07/2016 22:50

Anyone who thinks scooters look ridiculous ought to try one, IMHO! Then they might see why the rest of us no longer care whether we look ridiculous Grin

throwingpebbles · 05/07/2016 22:54

Quite itwas Grin

Clandestino · 06/07/2016 06:16

Thank you OP for this thread. I gave my microscooter to my DD so this morning I bought a new one for myself. Microscooter should send you a voucher for making business for them :D

SoupDragon · 06/07/2016 07:21

Anyone over 10 riding these things needs to go and have a long hard look at themselves.

I think the judgemental idiots need to go have a long hard look at themselves.
Why are they so uptight about a mode of transport?
Are they usually so angst you about things they don't like?
What other things do they deem " inappropriate" due to their own arrow mindedness?
Do they perhaps need to lighten up a bit and stop being so stupid?

JudyCoolibar · 06/07/2016 07:30

Look what you've done, OP - I could take or leave scooters before, but after reading this thread I want one!

throwingpebbles · 06/07/2016 08:03

I can't get my head round why scooting is thought by some to be "inappropriate" when any of the following are (presumably) fine if we care about what narrow minded people think :

-skiing
-cycling
-snowboarding
-jogging
-horse riding

  • surfing
  • windsurfing
  • ice skating

Can someone explain to me why these "ok" but scooting isn't?

Scooting is an efficient, environmentally friendly and flexible (easy to carry) way to commute, easy pressure on town centres and making it easier to link between stations and work/ out of town car parks and work.

It's definitely safer to scoot alongside a scooting child and more dignified than the sight of my panting sweating form running to keep up

It's also bloody good fun! It feels a bit like skiing. I can't really get skiing with toddlers, and this gives me my fix!

GerdaLovesLili · 06/07/2016 08:05

I use mine to get between two unconnected bits of bus-route to get to work, and to keep up with Small Son on his bike on the way to school. I use quiet bits of park and footpath and hop off if I think there's going to be a safety issue. It save me a lot of time and effort, and I don't care what I look like. YABU.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 06/07/2016 11:23

throwingpebbles, I only have a problem with methods of transport which involve someone whizzing along the pavement while I'm walking on it and expecting me to accommodate that.

If people on wheels recognise that pedestrians have priority and it's up to them to either avoid us or go at walking speed, then no problem.
