Adults on scooters

slugsinmygarden · 04/07/2016 09:07

I keep seeing grown adults using scooters to get around.

AIBU thinking they all look like complete knobs?

Yabu as long as they're not taking out other pedestrians I think it's great to see adults on them.

Kitsandkids · 04/07/2016 20:07

I was seriously considering buying a scooter, but I'm a bit upset at what people would think of me of I do!

My walk to school with my kids is 25 minutes. They are desperate to scoot there but that would involve lots of them waiting at kerbs while I catch up. The roads around here are busy but the pavements are quite quiet. I would be totally considerate and my children know they are expected to stay out of the way of pedestrians. I thought it would be a good idea but it seems others disagree.

SoupDragon · 04/07/2016 20:14

Go for it. Only the boring people disagree :)

NoWheelsOnMyWagon · 04/07/2016 20:20

There's a local 'famous' scootering granny in Surbiton who I think is still seen around these parts!Grin

YABVU.
People who commute part of the way but have long walk(s) at either end of the journey can save considerable time; and a scooter can be folded and taken on public transport (even when bikes cannot).

JamaisDodger · 04/07/2016 20:37

True for me. I don't usually see anyone when I'm scooting to the station through my village, but if I do I'll be sure to shout 'look at me! Aren't I cool?'

JamaisDodger · 04/07/2016 20:39

Also, what kind of mardy twat objects to other people having fun? On the grounds that they think it looks silly? Hmm

LordyMe · 04/07/2016 21:05

Yabu and YANBU

If you ride one knobbishly then you are indeed a knob but if you ride one to get from A to B then I think it's ok.

I sometimes have pick my car up from the train station. It's about a mile and a half away and its DOWNHILL the whole friggin' way. My bike doesn't fit into my car but I have a scooter. ....

I think I'd feel more of an idiot not scootering just because I was worried by being judged by sanctimonious pompous twats than scootering.

I have a larger wheel American style scooter with bike style brakes and I scooter safely.

Aeroflotgirl · 04/07/2016 21:08

Yabvvu quite joyless and boring. Why is it any of your business, if they are not hurting you. I have one, it's a fun and quick way to get about, and is good for fitness.

wamoh · 04/07/2016 21:16

I broke my hand on one of those when I was an au pair, they're not an acceptable form of transport for an adult!

LordyMe · 04/07/2016 21:28

Wamoh There are adult scooters, I'm guessing you were on a small wheeled one . Adult ones are perfectly safe if used properly.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 04/07/2016 21:35

micro scooters for adults had their first wave of popularity in the early 00s, before kids got in on the action. I had one then - I had a 1 mile walk on quiet streets to work and it saved me a good 10-15mins a day and I thought I was cool I am absolutely going to get another for myself once DS is old enough to start scooting! I love seeing families all out scooting together. YABU

1stWorldProblems · 04/07/2016 22:14

YABU. So I can run (looking sweaty & ridiculous since I love heels) after my scooter riding children shouting "Stop! Or I'll shout stop again." Whilst (though it's getting less of a problem now they're getting older & beginning to develop some road-sense) worrying about them shooting across driveways and getting run over.

OR I can scoot too & keep up with / be ahead of them on my own scooter whilst having fun, moving faster than I can on foot & burn more calories than on a bike or walking. Hmmmm - spending my 40th birthday money on a grown up scooter with bigger wheels & a better suspension was one of my better decisions.

I LOVE my scooter and I HATE running. Why should only the small people have all the fun?

Clandestino · 05/07/2016 01:57

Not sure what the problem with adults on scooters is? Unless it's jealousy because you can't use a scooter with that stick stuck up your arse?

Nataleejah · 05/07/2016 06:33

I have a three-wheeled adult one. Very soft.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2016 07:15

I have one with good sized air filled tyres. It's lovely.

teddygirlonce · 05/07/2016 07:58

Actually it is the toddlers on pavements (with parents not supervising them) who are annoying on scooters, not adults, particularly at school run times. There is undoubtedly a time and place for little ones having scooter fun but a busy pedestrian pavement isn't one of them.

Adults on scooters seem a considerate breed generally, although I would feel strange using one personally.

purplevase4 · 05/07/2016 08:13

I agree - and neither is a shopping centre.

I imagine the adults who scoot along a busy pavement (or let their kids do so) are the same ones who are annoyed by cyclists on a pavement.

Ha ha ha

I have one - it's either that or jog alongside my kids on the way to school [1.5 miles] and have plantar fasciitis so it's excruciating if I do that. I could make them walk but they are 4/6 so that would take an hour instead of 30 mins and life's too short.
Problem is that there's no where to lock it up then at the station nearest to their school, and I come home into a different station so I have to take it into London. I do feel like a twat scooting in the City Grin but it's far too heavy to lug around on my shoulder. No hipster types in the financial district so I stand out a mile as a 40+ woman on a scooter. I mostly think bollocks to it but walk if the pavements are too busy. I've tried to stay on the road but the wheels are too small for the potholes in the gutters and its very evident that cars/taxis/buses are not expecting you to be there so it's pretty dicey.

You can't scoot in stations or concourses any more than you can cycle, so anyone doing that fully deserves the total prat label.

It's great fun - much harder work than I expected though. The leg that stays on the scooter is basically doing squats all the time.

gotthemoononastick · 05/07/2016 09:25

I am ancient with a grey bun and woosh about on my big wheeled red scooter, because I can!.Could not give a fig if I look like a bed or any other kind of knob!

What a rude, mean spirited little post ,OP.Learn to live with a bit of joy before it is too late.

KingLooieCatz · 05/07/2016 09:30

I am desperate for it to catch on round here. I have tried many ways forms of transport to deal with getting to work and back, which sometimes but not always includes school run. It is only about 6 miles but so congested it can take an hour by car. Folding bike can go on bus but only folded in a proper bag. It is a beast to carry. I could leave a bike chained up in school playground but I'm not always going back past the school if DH collects/drops off. Can take bike on tram unfolded but only outside peak times, and that leaves me with a massive hill climb on the return journey. An adult scooter would be the business, make my journey faster and more joyful and the scooter would take up less space on packed peak time public transport than folded bike in bag. An awful lot easier to carry up the two flights of stairs to the flat!

DS could scoot with me on occasion! He would love that, it is just a shade too far to walk to school unless we have bags of time. 35 min walk, 15 mins on bus. I drop him off at 8 so it is normally the bus. I'd be happy to re-route myself to quieter streets.

However, I worry about people thinking I'm a twat. I might have talked myself into it now though. Please please let it catch on outside London so I look like less of a twat.

SuperFlyHigh · 05/07/2016 09:51

I know I'll get flamed to hell - and I don't really care but I just look at adults on scooters and think 'are you trying to recapture your youth/look trendy?' etc...

I could never ever use them.

Scooter story - my worst was a few years ago when I worked near Grosvenor Square and was unfortunate to meet almost every morning Arabic kids who scooted directly into your path, ignored you, and didn't understand a word of English and the parents also ignored you. Even if you screamed at them they still gave you a blank 'fuck you' stare and carried on trying to run you down.

LordyMe · 05/07/2016 10:00

Rest assured Superfly if I use my scooter it's 100% because it makes my one and a half mile DOWNHILL trip fast and easy rather than me trying to impress you with my coolness
